A quality opponent with a quality coach. The Netherlands have not yet shown their best in the WC, but they are a well-organized team with a good amount of talent. They have a speedy young winger who is one of the breakout stars of the WC so far. Their lineup has recognized and proven talent at all levels. Not an impossible task for the US but a much greater challenge than faced so far, because unlike the England game this will not end in a tie.
The US has to find a way to score and while Sargeant has performed slightly better than Wright, the harsh reality is that while we are undefeated they have only scored twice in three games. Berhalter has failed to find the finisher that would help complete this team and unless someone can emerge today the US will be heading home tomorrow. Maybe go with a false 9 and insert Reyna. Maybe finally give Ferreira his shot?
Also need to shore up the back line. Zimmerman has been shaky and so has Shaq Moore as a substitute. Ream, Dest and Robinson will need to provide cover and Tyler Adams will have to continue his stellar play as a defensive midfielder.
This can be a coming out moment for the US, or a coming home moment. Should be a very exciting challenge.
is an interesting selection. Probably more comfortable in the false 9 role then the other CF options. I wonder if he plays deeper given that VVD will likely dominate anything in the air and the Dutch will be playing a high line
Go USA! I think Holland will win, but this is a winnable game for our guys. Just wish we had a striker :-( The potential matchup with Argentina after this is in the quarterfinal is another deal altogether of course, lol.
England is favored over Senegal of course, but I think the Senegalese will beat them. Sadio Mané's absence will be felt BIG time in this matchup of course, but I think the English side are underestimating their opponents here and will pay for it. I saw Senegal play Egypt several times and studied their players. They can beat England.
Yeah, I thought Carter-Vickers earned another start.
Absolutely, he gave no quarter, was quick enough to get to hot spots and deny the Iranians. His demeanor did not waiver never mind it was his first action. I don't get it at all; Berhalter must think he's BB playing matchups.

Kevin, indeed, I guess. Ferriera is a gnat. But if he does play as you surmise, not sure how that improves goal scoring ops, forward line being where we struggle.
He's been solid defensively on the flank and furnishes good pressure on the overlap, stretching the opposing back line. He just doesn't quite have enough attacking prowess and threat to his game, struggles to get off dangerous crosses.
RE: My prediction for this game is separate from my rooting interest.

Agree 100%, but this WC has been full of surprises, I hope this US team finds a way to be another one. That said England may be in trouble. Hell, I hope the Aussies make it a game with Argentina, but that may be a long road to hoe.
NJoy the drama !
Fox keeps showing the last win at this stage Versus Mexico in 2002. Talking to Donovan about his Goal. Pass is equally impressive. Can’t tell who made that pass. Anyone know?

defense by the U.S. Pulisic also failed to score at point blank range. They finish. We don't.
We're also still trying to make too many passes near their goal instead of just shooting. The good news is that we've had most of the possession, but it won't matter unless we're willing to shoot and can score.
From my amateur eye, I agree, and that was my thought in their last two games as well. When you have a shot, shoot it; don't get too cutesy with the passes.

This presupposes they have shots to take, which they haven't.

Agreed, haven't seen us pass up on good shooting options, just need to be better with thoe last pass
the same formula as the first goal. A pass to an unguarded player in our box for an easy finish.
Let's stop deluding ourselves into believing that a team that barely qualified for the WC can compete with a European powerhouse like the Netherlands in the World Cup.

Damn it Zimmerman starting again.
Bigger than adv to quarters in 2002.
Netherlands is football royalty.

He doesn't play in the MLS.

I like Zimmerman but agree, Carter-Vickers played really well.
Question I have is how long will Pulisic play, and will we see Reyna?

I think it’s 2-1 Netherlands in 120 minutes. Hope I’m wrong
U.S.A. - Netherlands match (10 o'clock EST start) - Fox US broadcast link - ( New Window )
That team had a great midfield. Reyna and O'Brien
A clinic.
Passes ball too much instead of shooting
All the time

Dest reverting to ugly Dest
