Ranaan thinks OBJ wants to be Giants

Two things I think on OBJ situation from talking to people and observing:

1. Odell wants to be a Giant. The lure of coming to NY, making it a home for his family and winning in this city is enticing. There’s unfinished biz. It’s matter of if Giants want to pay him $$$ he wants.

2. The OBJ deal is more about next year than this year. Even Saquon Barkley has said it repeatedly, people need to be realistic. He’s coming back from serious knee injury. No training camp, no practice yet. It’s already December. Will take time to get in football shape.

Quote:

Anyone who thinks Odell Beckham rushing back from a second torn ACL should do a prove-it deal for the final few games of this season isn’t thinking logically. He’s better off waiting until next season to return rather than do that.

I think Giants are somewhat appealing because they don't need him this year. We can have him in case we make it to the playoffs, whereas the Bills/Cowboys will want him down the stretch.

I also believe Josina Anderson has been clued in from the very beginning, tweeting back in September about interest between Beckham and the Giants.

Too much smoke there for me to think he doesn't want to be here, or is using us for leverage.

Now do we pony up the dough? That's the real question. With a lot of cap space and a barren free agent market + Wan'Dale injured probably into next year, why not?

I completely agree - expectations should be low for '22

My concern is that the Giants have a lot of cap space, but they also have some big-time players they will need to pay in the next couple years (Dex, AT, McKinney) and have huge open questions with how they handle Barkley and Jones. As much as I am enticed for a reunion it just doesn't feel like this is the right time to invest in a 30-year old WR coming off two ACL repairs. Everything I read says that OBJ will go where he is paid the most, but unless that is <$11/year I don't see how this would be a wise investment with this roster.
Sorry, I don't see it
Gman11 : 12/3/2022 9:54 am : link
And here's why. If it was to get him on the field for the last 4 games at a minimum salary, then sure. They need a guy that can catch the ball. Whether he can do anything after the catch is in question, but first they need somebody that can catch.

Next year? Why? They can get a guy through free agency, trade or draft pick that doesn't have the baggage of being over 30 with 2 ACL tears.
Lmaoooo

OBJ wants to be a giants. Unfinished business……..AS LONG AS HE GETD PAID. Thanks Jordan for the awesome report!
supplly and demand
CMicks3110 : 12/3/2022 9:58 am : link
is why I think this has a chance of happening. Free Agency is barren, not only for wide receivers, but for a lot of positions. Except perhaps for RB. I was looking at the market and there really very many difference makers. Which is why building through the draft is really the only way to go these days. Teams are locking up core pieces at core positions.

The good news is, we have significant core pieces at core positions (OT, ED, S, DL); we have our RB if we want him, at least on a franchise tag. We can buy a LB. So going into the draft next year do we want to be boxed into a corner on two positions (WR, CB) or one. QB is the REAL wild card of course.

I think we sign Beckham because he wants to be here and we can use him. It would energize the fan base down the stretch whether we win or lose, and maybe we get him for some snaps in the playoffs if we make it.

This upcoming off-season the Giants will have plenty of options at wide receiver. It’s highly unlikely that any objective analysis of those options would suggest that Odell is the best.

I think it has more to do with, "I hate (insert name of sportswriter) therefore, any opinion or prediction he makes is total BS and just a way to get clicks."

Years ago when OBJ was hurt in preseason (vs. Cleve.) Ranaan was the first to say that OBJ would miss the season opener. Many BBIers were quick to predict that Ranaan was only saying that "to get clicks".

Until course OBJ missed the season opener.

because we really don't know how good he will be at 30 coming off a second ACL. Also I wouldn't expect much from him this season (look at Barkley last season). He will be able to maybe a possession guy but I doubt he will be a full go until 2023

I'm reading the tea leaves incorrectly, OBJ is not really looking to help a team this year but sign a contract now that would allow him to play in 2023.

If that's the case, I'm not sure he's a good fit here. Seems like a lot of NYG fans have nostalgia for guys like Beckham and Collins that don't seem to match up with the situation in 2022.
The lure to the Giants is the city the lights and glitter. Yes it's
Blue21 : 12/3/2022 11:00 am : link
$ too. But remember if he comes here he s the #1. Is he in Dallas? Definitely not in Buffalo. He wasn't in Tampa. And he loves Barkley and Shep. Is he coming? Who knows but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Think he'd like to show others how wrong they were too. I was a glad to see him go guy when he left but gotta admit right or wrong I might be fun to have him back .

Mark from Jersey : 12/3/2022 11:13 am : link
multiple reasons. Injury history, headcase history, rebuilding with youth and trying to save not spend.
Fans who want Odell are not looking at it from his view.
edavisiii : 12/3/2022 11:16 am : link
Sentiment is clouding the picture here BBI Crew...Nice storybook ending to some! But, does the football side of it work for Odell? Probably not! If I was Odell, I'd be saying, "this might be my last contract!" Can the Giants give him that? Should they? Risk not being able to sign young talent like Dexter Lawrence? I don't think the football/cap side works for Odell or the Giants. But, a lot of other teams might now want him too! He is always hurt, it is always about him. He is a nice guy from what many say but he needs a spotlight and some teams won't want that.

So the next question is, business, brand and endorsement wise, "How much does he need New York?" That to me, is the only factor that could have him end up here.

I get the "unfinished business side!" A lot of great HS players make their college team then quit because they feel like hired guns where as HS was plying with your brothers. I think OBJ has a part of him that wants to play with Shaquan and Shep, his original brothers in arms in the NFL.

Let's see where this unfolds! I have mixed feelings. ERIC HAS HIS RESERVATIONS AND THEY ARE LEGIT! He was a diva...YES. but I think this coaching staff is superior to Pat Shurmur's As far as relating to players and they might make it work. He will compete hard. Let's not forget he was real young 1st time around. Who knows. There is a lot more to X's and O's to this ....and sports is entertainment...lol
If he's not contributing this year
Spiciest Memelord : 12/3/2022 11:24 am : link
than it's even more boneheaded of Schoen to throw money and cap space down the toilet at him (a high degree of probability this is the case) to buy a ticket to the wavy gravy Wayback Nostalgia Machine. Really worse than anything Reese and Gettleman did combined.

How many times are we going to fall into this trap before you guys realize it's not the right move.

I told BBI that the Nate Solder contract was stupid. The response was, "what choice do we have?"

Dumb thinking.

We also traded Toney who is a detriment to the Giants and contributing nothing to KC.
This is hilarious
Milton : 12/3/2022 11:28 am : link
His agent is so obviously in full swing pimp mode and the media is going along with it for the clicks. OBJ is in it for the most guaranteed money possible (he doesn't give a shit about New York and its cold weather) and he and/or his agent view the Giants as the team most likely to overpay him, given a fan base that includes many who still love him (and others who view him far more realistically). And it doesn't hurt that the Giants currently have nothing at receiver.
On the flip

side, we know Daboll/Schoen want to address WR.

Wasn't the fallback in the draft Garrett Wilson?

Exactly. Throw JPP into that mix, too.

Too many romantics in this fanbase...

As we learned in the deGrom to Texas thread.....
GiantBlue : 12/3/2022 11:37 am : link
Wouldn't OBJ prefer Dallas simply for the no state tax alone?

It would seem we overpay at times because of the tax.

There will be plenty of nice WR's in the draft and FA.

If he isn't here to help us this year....and seeing Barkley realistically needing two years to get his burst back after one ACL.....is OBJ the same OBJ after two ACL's and within one year?

Pass
Logical thinking
fkap : 12/3/2022 11:39 am : link
would say that OBJ has to prove he can still play. He would rather not have to do that. I would rather have a contract that doesn't gamble on him returning to solid form.

Anybody paying him medium to big bucks with medium to big guarantees is a fool. If he doesn't want a prove it deal that only pays if he contributes, let him head elsewhere.

Call me a major skeptic BUT
Shecky : 12/3/2022 11:42 am : link
I read this two ways

Initially, I read this as OBJ leaking this to soften the blow (and OBJ bashing from NYC) when he doesn’t sign here. “Oh, he really really wanted to be a Giant. He loves the city and fans. Giants didn’t want him as much as he wanted them”

But then I got to the rest of the “news”. And all of a sudden OBJ doesn’t want to help a team THIS YEAR. Sure he can help in the playoffs (tease…). But it’s more about next year when he will be do I ant again

That screams to me that his medical aren’t exactly pretty he’s lowering expectations of what he can really do to help a team, yet still dangling that carrot about next year.

Reading these tea leaves with what is known he isn’t medically as good as he had hoped to be right now, but still wants to sign a big contract without pissing off Giants fans. Just my opinion.
I think that some people just assume...
Jim in Tampa : 12/3/2022 11:46 am : link
that there's going to be a big market for OBJ, based on the noise that he and his agent are making.

OBJ, his agent and many BBIers may be surprised to learn that the price for a 30 year old, one-time-star WR coming off 2 ACLs won't be that high.

If the Giants can sign OBJ to a reasonable, fair-market-value contract, I hope they get it done.
I agree with Jim
Lines of Scrimmage : 12/3/2022 12:05 pm : link
but Dallas is one team that probably will make a overpay. Jerry is pretty desperate to get the monkey off his back and he will make take that risk imv.
I suspect Schoen will put
Dave on the UWS : 12/3/2022 12:06 pm : link
a number value on Beckham. If OBJ thinks he’s gonna get this guy over a barrel, he should think again. Would they like to have him? Of healthy, sure - for the right price. That will be the case right down the line with all their free agents. Schoen and Daboll are NOT going to look for the quick fix. They want sustainable success here. Screwing the cap next year for Beckham will NOT be in their plans.
Whether this year or next...
bw in dc : 12/3/2022 12:12 pm : link
the last thing this team needs under this new regime is distractions.

2024 giants cap space like 150 million
90 million of that may be taken up by extensions for jones, dex, saquon, at, x and love. Plus draft picks
If they want Odell, cash isn’t an issue. Part of his cash can be pushed to 2024 if needed. If nothing else. I can see him as a solid wr2 for 23-24. We barely have solid #4 wr at this point

Can also understand wanting to use cap space to build foundation. Little ahead of ourselves but we are still 4-6 starters short and need more depth
