They naturally took the ball first, but is that the right thing to do in windy conditions?
No coach is going to not take the ball first because of the second guessing if you give up a td on the opening drive, but if you do not, isn't there a real advantage to having the wind in your favor? You get the first shot to win with a field goal. And kicking a field goal with the wind is much easier than against the wind.
That said, I don’t think it was a terrible decision in terms of win probability- probably a close call and coaches will default to the conventional decisions in those circumstances
But, how would we feel if we gave them the ball first and they score a TD? Not good, very angry. The thing is, they do have the scarier receivers in McLarin, Samuel, and Dotson who could take it to the house on any one play…and we do have a patched up secondary.
And in the game yesterday, look what had happened in first possessions. The whatever they call themselves now deferred giving the Giants first possession. Did they score a td? no, they turned the ball over and gave up a field goal. And in the second half the whatever they call themselves now took the opening kickoff. Did they score a td? No, they turned the ball over and gave up a td.
The wind was certainly having an effect on kicks going in that direction all game. I was in that end zone and I saw it over and over. It wasn't gusty, but it was doing something to the ball.
Exactly right.
I sit where both FGs were missed, there was some issues kicking (saw in warmups and halftime) but not nearly enough where you give up getting the ball.
Kicks over 50 yards were going to be an issue that way, but that's it.
