How did the Giants & Commanders perform

M.S. : 12/5/2022 7:30 am

relative to their recently played games (past 4):

W-L Record
Washington 3-1
New York 1-3
Game ended in a tie.

Points For (Average)
Washington 22.8
New York 18.8
Each team scored 20 points which is smack in the middle of their recent point totals.

Points Against (Average)
Washington 16.0
New York 25.5
Giants D performed a little better in terms of overall points allowed.

Rushing
Washington 642 yards / 157 attempts / 4.09 YPC / 3 TDs
New York 448 yards / 122 attempts / 3.67 YPC / 5 TDs
Both teams exceeded their YPC with Washington averaging 4.6 and the Giants 4.5. But the Giants run game in second half was literally non-existent.

Rushing Defense
Washington 338 yards / 87 attempts / 3.89 YPC / 2 TDs
New York 517 yards / 120 attempts / 4.31 YPC / 7 TDs
Whereas neither run defense distinguished itself in the first half, Washington made the necessary adjustments at halftime and crushed the Giants run game in the second half.

Passing
Washington 689 yards / 107 attempts / 61 completions / 57.0%
New York 942 yards / 127 attempts / 78 completions / 61.4%
Both QBs surpassed their recent completion percentage: Taylor Heinicke 66% and Daniel Jones 81%. But to the naked eye, it looked like the Giants coulda, woulda, shoulda had about 30 INTs.

Passing Defense
Washington 780 yards / 125 attempts / 74 completions / 59.2%
New York 957 yards / 127 attempts / 83 completions / 65.4%
Considering who the Giants were missing in their secondary, I think the unit should be praised for their overall performance, which was helped by a fairly effective pass rush. Washington's pass defense gets an assist from Slayton's almost-catch that probably should have been a catch.
MS, nice post

I’d have to imagine you are thrilled with the way the Giants are playing and especially the coaching staff. You’ve been outspoken about their roster deficiencies yet the Giants tied Washington who was one of the hottest teams in the NFL.

The undermanned Giants hung tough with Dallas, the same team who won 54-19 against the Colts (a team NYG still has to play).

The red hot Lions are 4-1 in their last 5 and could have beaten Buffalo. That loss doesn’t look so bad right now does it?

I’d imagine you are quite pleased with the coaching.

Well, I have a pretty simple view about the Giants coaching. On the one hand, I have not been in love with it since the Jacksonville game; but, on the other hand, it is extremely hard to have successful coaching with all the massive injuries sustained by the Giants... some of them self-inflicted, like Adoree Jackson fielding punts.

On another thread I wrote:

Giants now have 5 games remaining and they will all be very difficult, especially with all their injuries and their current level of play. Don't be shocked if they finish 8-8-1. It's a distinct possibility. If the Giants do indeed finish 8-8-1 (after a 7-2 start), I guess there's two ways of looking at Daboll's first season:

(1) The 2022 Giants are a vastly different (and better) team than where they ended up in 2021; or,
(2) After raising expectations to an unreasonably high level by mid-season, injuries (and a talent deficit) finally caught up to the 2022 Giants.

My overwhelming perspective / preference is #1.
As to your (1) and (2)

I think they are both true. We are a much better team that is obvious.

The injuries are a significant factor have caught up to us. Imagine having Shepard or Robinson or heaven forbid both. Imagine a secondary not missing 5 of its top 6 players or key players not playing their first game after missing a month or two. In other words, imagine the Giants playing with their projected starting lineup. I know, just kidding.
MS, I agree

I think the broader point is this team plays very hard for the coaching staff. The McKinney & Jackson injuries really hurt.
