1. 4th Quarter, 1:45 left, 1st down….Slayton dropped a long pass that would have at least put us in FG range with the score tied 20-20…2nd down, long pass to Slayton that to me appeared to be a penalty not called, 3rd down, Hodgins triple covered, pass incomplete and scary
2. 3rd Quarter, 3:34 left when drive started…..gained 8 on 1st down…The 2nd and 2…give to Barkley, no gain….3rd and two Jones rolled right and wanted to pass but ended up running for one yard (now I would like to know if someone can show me, if Jones just missed seeing or was “afraid” to throw it to a guy who was somewhat open.)
3. OT, 4:04 left to start the drive….Jones moved us down nicely for completions of 14, 7, 10, 12, 4, and 3. It’s now 3rd and 3……Richie and Barkley run into each other…Coach elects to punt rather than take the chance on their 47 yd line
4. 2nd quarter, less than 2 minutes when we began the drive….Jones and Barkley move us down the field nicely….3rd and 1 with 19 seconds left at the 11 yard line….Jones ran for 2 yards and got the first….but I was upset we didn’t throw at least one time in the end zone for 7 instead of settling for 3. Does anyone have conclusive proof Jones missed a TD opportunity here? Let me see it….Or was this just conservative play calling?
Let’s discuss….what are your thoughts and analysis of these 4 key possessions?
Oh my….knowing that makes me even more unhappy….
3rd and 2 - ( New Window )
Once they moved the chains the first time, they should have been much more careful to NOT let seconds tick off unnecessarily.
Felt like they left some points on the field here.
Yes….good catch.
As I see that replay, Hodgins wasn’t facing Jones so clearly Jones couldn’t throw it then….and I guess this Commander player came bearing down on Jones while Hodgins kept running forward…I really couldn’t tell if he was facing Jones and open as Jones began to move forward…..
But yes, that was a huge play….definitely would like to see it in 360° I believe is what they call it before I make my judgment…

It felt to me like Daboll is more interested in making sure Wash doesn’t get the ball back so he is willing to see the clock move on at the expense of limiting our ability to score a TD. That was a perfect example….we had 1st and goal, but didn’t have any time to run plays so had to settle for 3. This upset me greatly too…….GO FOR THE JUGULAR DABS! What happened to that fearless guy?

The video cuts off where the defender so it's tough to tell where the defender is relative to Hodgins by the time Hodgins turns his head

And this is Exhibit A for the problems with many of the arm chair QBs who claim Jones (or any other QB) misses a WR. You take one small snippet without any context or a full view and just run with a judgment

You make another very good point. I hope some people who are hard on Jones come into this thread and share their thoughts, be it finding fault with Jones or anything else. I’d like to read their perspective and then see if I can agree with it.
Actually, if you are going to criticize Jones, a thread like this is where to do it. These 4 possessions were HUGE. The game could have been different if any of these possessions had different outcomes. So let’s talk about what went wrong….
Play 2) three TE set to the right side, run right off tackle Vannett# 46 gets jacked up and tossed like a rag doll and Payne makes the tackle for a 2 yard loss, Bellinger makes a great block on the inside backer wiping him out, Myarick 85 released upfield and blocked nobody. Neal and Glowinski seemed to do there job, Feliciano pulls and seals the peel back but play was blown up by Payne already. Seems like a bad scheme to have a journeyman TE off the practice squad with a one on one with one of the best DT in the game, can't put a single TE on that guy he will blow up the play everytime.
Play 3) 2 rec left one Hodgins# 18 right goes in motion lines up off right tackle as TE, Glowinski pulls play action fake left Hodgins blocks the DE and releases into pattern fall out of screen DJ bootleg right pumps to deek the DE that was in his face and turns up to run and gets tackled one yard short. No idea if Hodgins was open would love to know. The play action did not fool the DE so give him credit they played solid Defense and were ready for the bootlegs all day.
I thought that drive was the momentum shift towards Washington. We never moved the ball after that series Washington's Defense took over the game. We need a center and a guard this offseason.
They aren’t doing anything creative to try to generate points. It legit looks like the Garrett/Judge offense now. They were much more imaginative early in the year.

Yeah I was pretty bummed after that series too. Heck, we had 2nd and 2 and still couldn’t get a first down.

play 1) DJ had a lot of time clean pocket, 2 receivers in route plus Belly on the left side had a chip delayed release to the flat, both receivers looked covered DJ dumps to Belly seemed like the sensible play for 8 yards.

In both 3rd and short yardage everyone knew Barley was getting the ball. Even the concessionaires send down additional people to key on him.. Why not go into a 2 back set. Either Brighwell or Brida. Now you have Jones, Barkley AND another back for the D to key on and stop. I bet donuts either Brightwell or Brida pick up the first. I said this in the game yesterdays thread. Now almost 24 later I still believe a2 back set in either of those 2 situations would have been sucessful!

Yeah, I was screaming at the TV with all those useless hand offs to SB in the 2nd half. I know we have to respect Wash’s D and ability to create a turnover, but it was pretty obvious to me, he alone would not help much…..unlike that Wash RB.
I don't think either throw was very good, but the first still should have been caught and the 2nd seemed like PI to me. I know Vilma said they were both looking back at the ball, but the defender didn't try to play the ball. He pulled Slayton down from behind by the shoulder pads. That's a penalty almost every time.
Guarantee to you other teams get that call.
You know, I was thinking the same thing at the time it happened but later just assumed I saw it wrong or missed something.
