Is a great idea. Great situation for both sides. Having something at QB in SF makes the season more interesting and gives a better chance for someone to beat Dallas and Philly in the playoffs
in Cleveland where they had probably the best OL and running game in the league. This tends to make things a bit easier on the QB. That running game was legit and not really QB dependent.
Even in his better years it seemed to me Cleveland was protecting him with how he they seemed to not throw downfield often.
49ers need to have reps waiting outside the Panthers facility.
which can fly in some positions but not at QB. Add in his shortcomings and I don’t think there’s many places he can go to and succeed. SF makes sense on a vet min contract to restablish value ahead of FA, but not much else.
Whatever one may think about Mayfield, you can't find a guy like him out on the street this time of the season usually.
I think he's as good as Garropollo so the Niners would be back in the saddle.
Agree. Has some mobility and KS likes that. They have a very good run game and the D is outstanding. Pretty similar to his best year in Cleveland. Just don't mess it up and make a few big plays a game and be efficient.
(which he should) BUT, if you are a team like Seattle, Washington, Detroit etc. trying to block the Niners from gaining help you could put a claim in for him.
exhibit A on "you can't trust college player rankings". Top 10 picks of QBs included Mayfield, Darnold and Rosen.
Yup. As awful as Giants front office has been for a decade, it's worth noting a lot of people who think they could do a better job would have climbed over everyone to draft one of those guys
But, the fact that the Jones pick was largely mocked by everyone in the media, while the Mayfield pick was applauded by most is hilarious.
This.
I literally face-palmed at the Jones pick but he's turned out to be far, far better than more hyped prospects including Mayfield, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Carson Wentz, Mitch Trubisky.

Jones and Trubisky are virtually identical through four seasons. And Wentz had accomplished more than Jones through his first four seasons.
I'm not sure how you can give DJ the win over either of them if you're only looking at the same apples-to-apples timeframes for each player respectively.
Versus Mayfield, I'd give a very close edge to DJ, but mostly because Mayfield seems like a headache (though Mayfield's productivity in Cleveland was better than DJ's has been here). Rosen is the only one of that list that DJ is clearly ahead of at the same point in their respective careers. Hooray. DJ is better than a QB that many had pegged as a bust before he was even drafted.
the differences in Cleveland to Carolina. He has shown efficiency with the right type of team as he showed where he struggles with a different type of team.
From the two you have a pretty good indication of where he stands and what he needs get the most out of his ability and where he falters. Not unlike most QB's.
Drafting a qb early can carry great risks or lead to great rewards.
he looked so happy in the TV commercials living at the stadium.
LOL. I think the Giants should sign him, either once he’s released or after the season is over. If you had told people in 2020 that Mayfield would be unceremoniously released mid season in 2022, their first thought would be, “ok, who did he murder?” Because it’s that crazy what’s happened to him.

Why would the Giants want to bring that drama, with low upside, into their locker room? No thanks, I'll pass. Then again, I never liked him coming out of Oklahoma....I'm not a fan of shorter QBs, especially those that are borderline athletic enough for the NFL.

Darnold is better? Wentz?
You're right - he's better than Darnold, too.
But at four years into each of their respective careers, Wentz was light years ahead of where DJ is right now. If anything Wentz (and others not mentioned here, like Goff) are the cautionary tale that should cause a reasonable person to tap the brakes on DJ's next contract.

Good point
Except that it's not true.
When the Browns chose Mayfield with the first over all pick, there was widespread surprise. There definitely was not a consensus that Mayfield was the best available. News leaked just before that they were going with him. It wasn't applauded by most, it was much more of, "hmmm, interesting."

So we sign OBJ this month and after he signs we tell him we’re releasing Jones and bringing in Mayfield…that’ll make a great off season read…The tabloid couldn’t get the next edition out fast enough….🤣

As opposed to the Jones pick which was a resounding "wahhhh"
Whatever one may think about Mayfield, you can't find a guy like him out on the street this time of the season usually.
I think he's as good as Garropollo so the Niners would be back in the saddle.
He goes to waivers - he is not a free agent unless he clears waivers. 9ers are near the bottom of the waiver list. I would be surprised if a team higher on the waiver list doesn't snag him first.
Nothing more needed to be said, they knew what it meant
He asked for his release because he was benched. Can't blame him. I think he'll get a starting job and decent money for 2023 season. He went the playoffs so there will always be teams that think they can revive his career.
Even if true, would be worth picking him up as insurance.
Even in his better years it seemed to me Cleveland was protecting him with how he they seemed to not throw downfield often.

I doubt anyone will do that however.
If DJ wouldve been drafted by the Browns, then traded to the Panthers (under Tepper)...it wouldve been the same story
Giants management is just more patient
Yup. As awful as Giants front office has been for a decade, it's worth noting a lot of people who think they could do a better job would have climbed over everyone to draft one of those guys
It's also why you don't rule out drafting a QB simply because you don't start with a top 10 pick.
Buffalo started out with the 21st pick, before making two trades to go get Josh Allen at 7.
Baltimore started out with the 52nd pick, before trading up to take Lamar Jackson at 32.
I literally face-palmed at the Jones pick but he's turned out to be far, far better than more hyped prospects including Mayfield, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Carson Wentz, Mitch Trubisky.
Considerring the Niners signed Josh Johnson, he of his 65th team signed by, they most certainly could be in the market for Mayfield.

Stefanski is a great offensive mind.
McAdoo is a clown.

At least as a backup right?
I mean what if Purdy gets hurt? LOL
Pickup Mayfield as insurance, maybe you get lightning in a bottle if Purdy really starts to struggle.
Really hurts San Fran..........
