I see a lot of 1997 in this team

TDMaker85 : 12/5/2022 12:09 pm
And not just the tie with Washington and the head-bangin' Gus Frerotte. First year of new regime, team outplaying low expectations, fierce, aggressive D, struggling, scuffling O, QB tasked only with game management, etc. Boy could we use a David Patton right now.

This teams is lacking explosiveness outside of Barkley.

If you remember, back in 1997 Charles Way was our leading rusher. A fullback.

The parallels are striking.

was the Giants # 1 wide out then and he would be now.

Pretty incredible.

At the beginning of the season that they could see this year being a lot like 97 and there are a lot of similarities. One major difference is that the rest of the nfc east was crap that year.

yup barber was the third down back and Wheatley was injured. Way was awesome that year it’s a shame injuries derailed a promising career.
If you took the 1997 defense...
Big Blue Blogger : 12/5/2022 12:27 pm : link
...and accelerated Sehorn's 1998 knee injury by ten months, the units would look quite similar.

Let's remember, though, how the 1997 Giants won: a ridiculous +25 turnover differential and a +22 sack differential. The 2022 Giants are +3 in turnovers and -12 in sacks. Unlike the 1997 team, they don't do anything especially well, and their margin for error is nil.
A Duke QB in a friendlier offense the previous regime...

Yep.

That 97 offense really was held together by scotch tape and twine due to injuries and inherited players who weren't all that good lol
'97 defense was better

This season is shaping up to be a mashup of 1984 & 1997
Matt in SGS : 12/5/2022 1:06 pm : link
It has the feel of a logjam and tie breakers to make the playoffs coming into play like 1984. Jones and Simms both in make or break seasons (Simms broke out).

But it has the 1997 feel of an offensive coach coming in and relying on the run and defense to win until he could find his pieces to run the offense he wanted. For Fassel, that wasn't until Collins took over later in 1999.

However, as most said above. The 1997 defense was much better. They were building into a dominant unit during the losing of 1995 & 1996. I do see John Fox and Wink parallels, but Fox had much more to work with.

+1 By far.

Loved Robert Harris, Hammer, Stray, Bratzke, Armstead, Sparks, Sehorn, & Garnes. Wooten and Widmer were alright, but not on the level of those other guys.

This team needs another DE (B.J. Hill would look good if he were still in blue) along with a MLB, or two, lol. The edges/OLBs are solid Azeez and Thibs. We desperately need another starting Corner to go along with Jackson. I just hope that Leo and Sexy Dexy stay healthy. Love those two together on the DL. Dex might be the best interior DL in the league now.

Basically we need a player for each level of the defense still. The '97 team was way more advanced than this club defensively. We need another good draft or two amd FA cycle to reach their level.

'97 offense was better, quite honestly.

The only way this team would beat that '97 team is through a Fassel 4th quarter meltdown (TM).
this team was playing where it should have been playing early on
djm : 12/5/2022 4:06 pm : link
once they lost the secondary and only now have the edge guys back at close to full speed, we became ordinary.

I thought the team looked the best it has looked yesterday in over a month. The edge defenders look legit dangerous now and the offense wasn't terrible, just not good enough.

Somehow we need to break a few big plays with Barkley, these next few weeks.

The 97 offense was in no way shape or form better than this offense. 97 team scored 307 points. This team has already scored 245 points with 4 more weeks to get to 16 games played. It will score more points and total more yardage, I feel comfortable saying that.

This year's team has allowed 252 points but we know the defense can't get off the field nearly enough. The 97 D allowed 265 points and killed people weekly.

The 97 offense had the seas part weekly. It had no business making the playoffs but thx to a ridiculously good D did so.

97 team
djm : 12/5/2022 4:18 pm : link
had better specials by a wide margin and better D by a wide margin. The offense was worse than this one.
Awesome

97-2002 was a golden era compared to 17-21. Hopefully we’re closer than ten years out from true excellence.
Well the two teams have a tie vs. Washington
