Judge earned that.

Now let’s find someone willing to take Correa, Scherzer, Verlander type deals.

by Judge's agent, Page Odle.

Feels like it was always NYY and that SFG was the lever to extract the most humanly possible. Especially if reports are true that SFG was willing to go slightly higher.

Beyond his cut on Judge, Odle probably earned a good deal of new business in the last 48.

Meh, a lot of it was true...perhaps a little bit of spite. No worse than a game thread.

BTW, wish it was 8 years, but 9 is a hell of a lot better than 10. By then, even Judge may be sick of it. Maintaining that body will not be easy, as dedicated as he is...

Really? We can surmise he wanted better than Trout money. Trout was at $36 mill AAV +/-. So $38 mill was what he was looking for...
All it would have done is reduce the drama, maybe save $15 to $18 mill over the life of the contract - you know, chump change as per BBI.

Judge is a Yankee. Probably will be named captain soon. He never needed every last nickel. He just wanted the Yanks to pony up and show respect, and they did. Like sing him would have been catastrophic. For those who remember 1982 and Reggie's return, opening day vs the Giants would have made that look like a celebration party. It might have been a blow that took the organization a long time to return from.

The Yankees kind of had to do it. You do wonder about his health long-term. As a Red Sox fan, I get sh-t from friends about the Mookie Betts trade, and since they didn't get much back in that trade (Verdugo, an average player), it's kind of similar.

Chaim Bloom and the Sox seem to be against these gigantic deals. I'm kind of against them, but the Sox are gonna want to keep Devers and that will be a crazy deal. We'll see what happens. But these deals north of $300M are really crazy. The Yankees will be paying for this for a long time, but maybe Judge can lead them back to the promised land. We'll see.

The Yankees problem is scoring runs against top pitching in the playoffs because of their lack of being able to put the ball in play and take advantage of situational hitting. No team is going to hit four or five bombs against the league's top pitchers in the playoffs. This team's K rate with no out and a runner on second is terrible, especially in the playoffs. The over-emphasis on analytics (always try to hit a home run) ruined Sanchez and Torres. I suspect we'll see more of that in the future (Volpe?).

Give me eight guys who all hit .280 with 20 home runs or more and the Yankees prospects of getting past Houston improve immensely.

Pretty sure he has to pay state income tax where he works and is paid, NY not Florida. Not to mention he probably lives in NYC area for more than six months, though he likely claims his Tampa home as his main residence.

The weather in Arizona (where the Giants train) is pretty good, with no threat of hurricanes. He and his wife would live in Northern California during the season (as they do in NY), and therefore be much closer to their parents.

I live in Mass. as well, and as folks know on here, Yanks fan. The Sawx will never go to this level of spending on one player, just John Henry for you. I am actually surprised that Hal went to this level of financial outlay to keep Judge...After Jon Heyman jumped the gun (he should be embarrassed today), and that Time article on Judge,
I thought he was going to San Fran. The back end of this contract is probably not going to look good...

Exactly. It's a theory that can get you to the playoffs by feasting on bad pitching, but is a recipe for never getting the trophy. I suspect Hal is more concerned with getting to the playoffs every year (for the added revenue) than he is with winning the World Series, and that is likely what he has mandated for Cashman.

I'm not sure these deals are as bad as one thinks, provided the player is still producing at the end of the contract. 40M in 2033 will look a lot different than it does in 2023. Remember, most of us old timers were aghast at Catfish Hunter receiving a five-year deal worth about $3.2 million, along with a $1 million signing bonus in the winter of 1975. Think it was actually NYE when it was completed.

Ignore the critics. This is the same behavior that drove a lot of the asshats off the site. They clamor for "inside" information and then take a shit on anyone who provides it if it doesn't turn out to be the case.

You have been here a long time. Know that there are a lot of posters who recognize that and will take what you provide with the understanding that there are no guarantees.

State tax on endorsement and investment income is based on domicile. Judge has a number of endorsements and he's not putting his salary under a mattress.

New York only gets a cut of his Yankee home games' salary.

Not everybody likes the desert and Judge has never lived there. He's on the Bucs' sidelines wearing a Bucs' jersey. Pretty good indicator he has become a Florida guy.

I am the one with the information that Judge does not like Cashman and he obviously doesn't. I made it clear that I had no idea where he was going. So, you sound unhinged.

Lol, try not to trip on that backpedal.

Backpedal. I am not backpedaling at all. Look at the thread from yesterday, but I guess I won't give info that I stumble onto at BBI anymore, just like last year when I broke the Judge wanted to team with Abrams the day as a way to save himself 24 hours before NFL insiders broke it on TV. You can say what you want, but if you look at the thread yesterday I had never said he was going to leave the Yankees; in fact, I said I 1000000% had no idea what he was going to do.
But ok. I will keep my info to myself from now on. Lesson learned

I get that and appreciate it, but I specifically said that he doesn't like Cashman. I did not say he was going to sign here. I think the Time Magazine article backs up that assertion. My info was not proven incorrect because he signed here when I specifically cautioned that I had no idea what he was going to do.

Very strong defensively, but also means probably a return to a more traditional looking lineup. The offense could end up being better. Those two guys bat 1-2 or DJLM 2, Judge 3, Stanton/Rizzo 4-5 (depending on whether you want to break up the righty bats), Torres (if he's still here, DJLM, Trevino, Peraza. Cabrera on deck as a sub in the OF, 3B, SS, 2B and maybe 1B.

We'll see.

.

After Dumb brow ski saddled JH with a Price, and even worse Sale contract, Betts was unaffordable , and they were fortunate to find a buyer.
I have no idea what they are doing there( maybe the Penguins are JHsnew play toy) because they’ve drafted 5 SS under Bloom with homegrown Pitching their biggest weakness.
Yanks did well to bring back a player like AJ who wants to be there and has good character.

at age 36-40. If the Yankees contend for the World Series each of the next five years, and maybe win one or two, the amount of money the team will make in paraphernalia, TV viewership, attendance, etc. will far exceed the money paid to Judge during the out years of his contract.
The Yankees

Need to change the composition of their lineup. They have too many players that are an easy out, and too many many players that are HR hitters but can't hit above the .220 to .230 range. In the playoffs we saw they either hit the HR or nothing. They need to add some hitters that hit for average and can generate runs when the long balls are not coming. Judge can't be the only player that can.

The weather in Arizona (where the Giants train) is pretty good, with no threat of hurricanes. He and his wife would live in Northern California during the season (as they do in NY), and therefore be much closer to their parents.

For NY state tax purposes, I believe you only have to own a home in the state and live there for at least 30 days a year to be a resident. Regardless, NY gets to tax half his salary, as would California. The other half is split between all the other places he plays. So as far as his salary, the only portion applicable to Florida is that earned in games played in St. Pete and Miami. As far as endorsements, I assume he has a private entity in Florida to exempt his endorsement earnings from state taxes where he "earns it". But considering his net worth before signing his $19 million contract last spring was just $10 million, his endorsements so far are much less than the money in this deal. Sure that will rise. But Ohtani was tops in endorsements last year at $6 million, and that includes Japan, where he is a god.

If Judge had signed with SF who is to say he might not have been on the 49ers sidelines wearing their jersey next year. It's the first time he has been reported to be at a Bucs game, odd for a star athlete living in the town. How many Rangers and Knicks games have Yankees been seen at over the last few years. His attendance, and wearing a #13 jersey, was his way of thanking Mike Evans for putting on a #99 jersey at a Bucs game after Judge set the HR record. By the ay, I've seen plenty of people move here and become Bucs fans (like the explosion of sudden Bucs fans when Brady signed) while still being fans of their hometown teams.

Judge had also never lived in a hot, humid place like Florida before he did. I can tell you, after a few years of 95 degrees and 95 percent humidity, the dry Arizona air sounds pretty desirable. He could also continue to live in Tampa in the offseason, which would make the endorsement money a wash. For 40 million a year he and his wife could buy winter homes in Tampa for their parents.

Not so. Having his domicile in a state with no income tax also benefits him for every game played in a state with no income tax, not just the ones in Florida.

Every game @ Astros, Rangers, Mariners.

I lived in California for multiple decades and have lived in Florida for the past one. There are a lot of reasons for Judge, with his schedule, to prefer Tampa as his main base.

That is correct. I know someone who was an offensive lineman in the NFL back in the 2000's. Professional sports is considered to be entertainment, so therefore the athletes must pay taxes in the states in which they are playing or "performing", if you will. He did remark that they always loved it on the schedule when there were multiple road games in Florida in the same season.

I'm assuming this holds true for the other pro sports, and if that's the case, that's a ton of filing for the duration of those seasons and the multiple trips made to same cities.

Prefer Yoshida as well- OBP machine who has a decent amount of power- and is a lefty bat to boot. In Japan, he walked about 2-3 times more often than he struck out. Even if better velocity and stuff means that it fades to 1:1, that's still outstanding in today's day and age.

Add in the change with defensive shifts, and he could have some serious upside.

And BTW, this statement is simply wrong. You are not subject to NY state income tax if you buy a property in NY and spend 30 days a year there, not even close. The actual standard:

Quote:
You may be subject to tax as a resident even if your domicile is not New York.

You are a New York State resident if your domicile is New York State OR:

you maintain a permanent place of abode in New York State for substantially all of the taxable year; and
you spend 184 days or more in New York State during the taxable year.

He's a strange player. Saw a lot of him being in New England. He should be better than he is.

He does get on base where he proceeds to go station to station. He's got a hole in his swing high and on the outer part of the plate. He has a hard time judging that pitch. He has no power and steals few bases.

There's a reason the Red Sox gave him away and they know him best and KC unloaded him mid-season. He's an ok fielder, not bad, not great. He's a middling piece. Don't expect much or you will disappointed.

which is said to sap a hitter's power for months afterwards. Even when he was attempting a comeback at the end of the year he needed an injection for lingering discomfort.

I liked the idea of what we were going for with Benintendi, but I'm afraid that, with the injury, the Yankees dole out extra cash for a player who reverts to league average rather quickly.

The word on Yoshida is he's no good in the field. That doesn't sound great either.

I'm for paying the cost for Reynolds, I think.

This. I’ve been concerned with hamate for the same reason. Wrist injuries have altered or ended a lot of good hitters careers
Wow almost 400 mil..

That's great but what are they going to do with the pitching staff which imo is the biggest concern?? Pitching is key man.

So as far as his salary, the only portion applicable to Florida is that earned in games played in St. Pete and Miami. - ( New Window )

True. And my point is that would be the same if he had signed with San Fran. In fact he would have a higher tax bill in the state of California than New York because he would have seven games each at LA and SD as opposed what, 2 games at Citifield against the Mets?

He's not really a power hitter. He's only hit 20 once, and it was just 20.

Crazy enough compared to the last few years, I think the staff is almost there. 3rd lowest ERA last year (4th for starters, 3rd for relievers).

If they can add a Rodon, they could be in the running for the best staff in baseball - certainly a top 5 one.

STARTERS
Cole
Cortes
Rodon
Severino
Montas

RELIEVERS
Schmidt / German
King
Loasiga
Kahnle
Holmes
Peralta
Marinaccio
Trivino

--

German has consistency issues but is a very solid 6th starter. Team has good depth for the relievers as well.

--

That's a great group. Obviously banks on the ability to get Rodon.

Offense is really the bigger issue

Judge is 282 pounds and will be signed through his age-39 season. He'll have a chance to become just the second player ever to hit a home run at 270 pounds or more and at age 37 or higher.

The other was Bartolo Colon.

I’d be worried if Judge had a body like Steve Balboni- but he’s actually a lean chiseled player who carries his weight proportionally. Yes- his knees will wear down over time- as tends to happen playing oF daily. But he’ll likely transition to DH down the road to reduce the wear and tear.

Not so worried about the physical aspects of Judge going forward. I’d worry more about whether the loss of athleticism as he ages affects his bat speed.

I thought Cashman was inept and couldn’t get it done? I thought someone with supposed inside knowledge of Judge’s circle that Judge didn’t like Cashman? I thought Hal was a cheapskate? I thought the Yankees were just content to just merely be good and collect money from the fans? And other blah blah blah bullshit.

LMFAO!

Glad it got done. Now go get some pitching.

I am the one with the information that Judge does not like Cashman and he obviously doesn't. I made it clear that I had no idea where he was going. So, you sound unhinged.

I’m unhinged? Oh you poor delusional soul. “Obviously didn’t like Cashman.” Based on what, your ‘inside knowledge’. You didn’t know shit. And now you’re backpedaling so fast your about to fall off the bike.

Sucks to suck.

The problem is Stanton is here for a bulk of this deal, making Judge transitioning to DH problematic.

Everything is transactional with Hal. Get ready for $40 chicken buckets next season...all joking aside, glad he stepped up and got it done. His dad would be proud today.
So, I guess free medium Pepsis are not in the cards for Yankee Stadium?
