For everyone who thought this was a bottom tier team:

I’m curious how your opinion has changed on the following if at all:

-The current roster
-Competitive timeline

Has the 9-7-1 record changed your expectations for next year and how soon the Super Bowl window can begin?

this is far from a complete roster
TheBlueprintNC : 1/12/2023 3:01 pm : link
but every player on it is tough and competitive. The Free agent pick ups after a very good draft highlight the ability of this staff to find and utilize talent. The coaching is superb!

The team now has the most important foundational components.. They have a gritty talented gamer QB, they have a RB and a LT they have DT the have SS x2 they have a CB, and a TE. I think we have the makings of a really good D after the next draft and FA. While i would love to see a top 1WR im not sure that is vital to championship team a couple of really good ones would help dramatically.

are paramount in the NFL. People tend to overblow the talent difference between teams. Most teams are fairly equal in talent, but some teams have great QBs, and some get lucky on the injury front.

We have little depth on the D-line primarily due to injury. The O-Line is still a work in progress, but has several promising pieces.

Think about Dallas, where would they be now if Garrett was the OC and Mike Nolan was the DC?

This. Exhibit A that proves this point is the last Giants/Eagles game. On paper the Giants had no business being competitive in that game.

I know this game doesn't get as much attention as others, but Daboll drawing up plays for the wildcat on the sidelines when both QBs were hurt vs. Chicago impressed me.
The roster still is not good enough, particularly on O

we snuck in this year. Hopefully next year we get more pieces to the puzzle.

I do agree with this. I think there are two rosters that are head and shoulders more talented than the rest of the league - Philly and SF. There are a handful of teams that are drawing dead though at the bottom of the league. Outside of that it's the QBs being the biggest difference makers followed by coaching.

Roster still has major holes. They are working minor miracles with what they have at WR, CB, ILB. And we're not talking one or two players away there. The OL is also still a work in progress. ZERO depth on DL too.

Where they did improve in-season was at TE and S.

As for timeline, that depends on your view of Daniel Jones. If he's the guy, then the timeline shrank big time. If he is not and they re-sign him, timeline is longer.
He is the guy. He took an average at best OL, top 5 rb, practice squad wrs and rookie 4th round TE to the playoffs and had a top 10 red zone efficiency.

More games in the NFL are lost than won, it is why turnovers are focused on by every coach. Daniel has absolutely learned the lesson of protecting the rock. He is no longer careless, knows when to tuck and run.

Daniel Jones is an ascending player. People are worried about paying to much.

We are about to get a bargain. Daniel Jones will outplay his next contract.
Lawrence/Thomas having true All-Pro caliber seasons
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 1/12/2023 4:49 pm : link
has been the key to it all. Williams plays better with Lawrence feasting, Jones/Barkley play better with Thomas being an actual Giants stud young OT.

Those guys all stepping up has absolutely changed my outlook of this team in terms of the present and future, as none of them are older players.

I wondered if Jones could play better with better coaching and a somewhat capable OL, he has done just that despite way worse than expected WR talent. Barkley looks to be close to the back he used to be before the injury setbacks. The DL and pass rush looks to have something great brewing, something all great Giants teams apparently need. We need a strong ILB, at least a good #2 type CB, and a #1 WR. We do that, I don't see why this team couldn't build something great. I trust what the Coaching Staff has shown so far.
The difference between a great team and a bad one
AnnapolisMike : 1/12/2023 4:57 pm : link
is primarily coaching, health and 5-6 players at key positions. 75% of most rosters are fungible. The Giants need some additional players and salary cap room will give them a chance to get that as will another draft. The Giants have a chance this weekend because they are getting some players healthy at the right time. If this game was a month ago...they are likely losing this game.

I mostly agree. I don't think the OL is as much of a work in progress as most. If Gates moves to OC where he belongs (and Feliciano does not), they have LT, RT, and OC shored up with solid talent. I would have Ezeudu penciled in at LG, but they have a number of guys who could compete for LG and RG with the top 2 winning and the rest providing decent depth. That said, I do think they should be drafting the best interior OL on their board with one of their 2nd or 3rd round picks.
Great progress so far
federer70 : 1/12/2023 5:40 pm : link
And hopefully more to come next year; but definitely we need a good offseason - e.g., getting major talent at the WR, either acquiring or developing a second RB, hopefully some assurances that DJ can win with his arm, and more talent at LB and OL. I'll keep my fingers crossed, since it's so hard to evaluate a QB you don't ask to do much, but it's been a fairly nice ride so far. I definitely do not want to see malcontents sitting on the bench again (or getting traded) next year though :-).
We knew Joe Judge & co were bad.
81_Great_Dane : 1/13/2023 11:05 am : link
but now we have some idea just how bad. Player development held back, especially Jones... offense underachieving... It was every bit the clown show.

So I figured there'd be some addition by subtraction, but I didn't realize how much. The reason we're talking about Gettlemen maybe having done better than we thought (Let's not reopen that argument.) is that some of his picks suddenly look like players instead of busts. Dex is playing in his proper position again, etc.

Schoen also deserves credit for finding competent contributors during the season.

I thought 7-8 wins was probably the limit. Never would have imagined playoffs as the season was starting. Happy to have been wrong.
They were a bottom of the bottom tier team before Daboll
The Mike : 1/13/2023 11:43 am : link
With Daboll, they have moved to the middle of the middle tier this year, accelerated the timeline of the rebuild and put in place a program that should not only be set for continuous improvement, but again be a destination spot for top talent.

In terms of on field performance, this season was not dissimilar to 2016 in that we had an easy schedule and we took care of business in unspectacular fashion to make the playoffs. The big difference though is McAdoo had no idea what he was doing.

He and Reese took that team in exactly the wrong direction from the moment Gilbride was fired. And it was clear to me by halftime on opening day 2017, which I personally suffered through at Texas Stadium, that 2016 was nothing more than that moment of sunlight just before the tsunami at the end of the movie The Perfect Storm. An illusion.

Daboll on the other hand, knew that the key to rescuing a team from the bottom tier was to get back to defense and ball control offense. And his leadership skills have been a master class in executive management. Be authentic. Be courageous. And surround yourself with great people who are better than you in their respective roles and committed with a singular focus to your vision. Such a joy to not see Daboll squinting at his little play sheet ala McAdoo and Shurmur when what the team always needed most from their head coach was simply authentic leadership.

So I expect the Giants to perform well Sunday. It is a winnable game and will likely come down to a last second scoring situation. But whether we win or lose, there is reason to believe again in what is happening in East Rutherford.

And that is due to Brian Daboll. And of course, Joe Schoen for having the courage to go against the instinctive grain of the ownership by hiring Daboll rather than Flores and allowing Daboll to bring in his own staff rather than being saddled with others ala Garrett. It looks like we finally have our successor to Coughlin.

Kudos to the Giants organization for a remarkable turnaround.

Kafka is worth 2-3 wins, and Wink is worth 2-3 wins.
CT Charlie : 1/13/2023 8:02 pm : link
If we lose either guy, we'll struggle to be .500 next year, regardless of changes in the roster. SuperBowl window is the same as it is for most teams – too distant to tell. But we're definitely closer than we were the past two years.
