Wink staying?

River Mike : 1/18/2023 4:31 pm
Don't know if this has been posted, but I haven't seen it ...

"Speaking to the media on Wednesday, New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said he doesn't consider his current job a "stepping stone" and as a result does not plan to interview for the vacant Indianapolis Colts job this week. He did open the door to interviewing next week if the Colts are still interested though."

That quote seems to contradict itself
oh wait
River Mike : 1/18/2023 4:33 pm : link
I see, he won't interview this week but is open to interviewing next week. Sapparently a nothing burger
And
River Mike : 1/18/2023 4:34 pm : link
Per Giants insider Art Stapleton, Martindale explained that he considers the position of Giants DC to be a "destination" job as opposed to a job where he can simply improve his resume/CV.

So his answer is similar to his defense scheme. Shows one look then does something.
Just to be clear I wish Wink every luck in his aspersions BUT I hope they’re all with the Giants!
Like his interviews and the excitement he brings to our defense.
STAY HERE WINK!!!!

The DC position with the Giants is better than many HC jobs.
Better things to do now.

If we should lose this week, perhaps he'd find the time to talk.
He said in the interview

that he will take interviews after if the other team is still interested.

He's got the time. Irsay, Tepper, the Bidwells and maybe Greg Penner simply don't have the resume Wink is looking for to qualify for an interview with him.
Nothing wrong with not wanting to distract from this season

Teams should not be allowed to hire/interview coaches from other teams until the season is officially over. So after the Superbowl.
God I hope so

Not only would it be terrible to lose Wink he would surely take OLB coach Drew Wilkins with him to be his DC.
Wink is a great DC...

but is not a head coach. I think he knows that and will not be going anywhere.
Can’t link but he’s on Twitter…

situation his in here in NY. It seems like if the right situation arises, maybe he'd take it. I think thats maybe a peak into which owners he'd prefer to work for. What he's done here this year and how he's handled the press as well as the players, I wish him the best situation possible for him. Karma.....
I think he is really happy with the whole organization
Lines of Scrimmage : 1/18/2023 5:07 pm : link
but I would thing he would take a HC'ing job if he felt it was a good situation.

I really like having him here and in addition to his football smarts I value how deeply he cares for his coaches and players.

Selfishly I want to keep him but I will wish him well if he eventually moves on. I'm sure they are grooming someone in case this happens.

I think he has pause on Irsay and the Colts .... Yeah he wants to be a HC but leave a very good situation for a situation that is unstable to put it mildly, isn't ideal and I think he sees it that way currently. Yeah he'll interview but Irsay and the Colts will be interviewing as well (or at least should be).
Translated- IF he gets

He has

No! If you aspire to be a HC, coaching a team with the worst talent and the worst front office in the league is still better than being a DC anywhere.
Wink is not the type of guy who would
Southern Man : 1/18/2023 5:28 pm : link
put himself ahead of the team. No way he'd take an interview that would interfere with short-week preparation for a formidable Eagles team. Think he would make a good head coach...players would play for him and he is pretty crafty with his strategic thinking. Hope he stays here though.
I think he knows that he has some core
Giantimistic : 1/18/2023 5:36 pm : link
Defensive players to build something special and dominant. He isn’t dining another Dex somewhere else. If he builds a dominant defense in NY the leads to a Super Bowl, that shows he could do it in 2 places and he wasn’t just a product of Baltimore’s defensive machine.

He interviewed w the Giants for the HC job lol. Pretty sure he might still interview I think he'd like to interview for the right opportunity. Why not talk to someone. As far as the Colts No Qb and an asshole owner might be not the spot he wants to land if he does decide to move to a HC spot
Wink should get his shot
DavidinBMNY : 1/18/2023 6:14 pm : link
I just don't know if Indy is worth it. The Saturday move was pretty unorthodox. Imagine you were the OC or DC for that team and you didn't get a shot. Wink knows those people.

Indy might be one of only a few franchises where you take a hard pass.

I would think he's much more prepared to handle a HC role then Kafka based on his years of experience.
He's Said He Wants To Be A HC,
clatterbuck : 1/18/2023 6:20 pm : link
I watched the interview. What it sounds like is that continued success in NY might lead to what he'd consider an optimal opportunity, but in the meantime, he's very happy with Daboll, the Giants, the organization, and ownership, and he sounds very sincere in how much he likes NY and the Giants fanbase. Wink is very good with the media and he seems to enjoy the interaction.

I listened to it as well. Makes a lot more sense hearing the whole thing. He spoke about how NY is the greatest city with the greatest fans and how much he admires ownership from when he first met with them.
This isn't difficult to translate...

If he gets a HC offer, he's taking it, even if it with a dysfunctional organization like the Colts. He's up there in age & he might not get a lot of chances going forward.

Yep. I agree. He'll take his chances and make a lot of money.

Who wouldn't?

I feel good about the odds of him staying here. The trend is clearly

towards much younger HCs. And at his age I don't think he would want to go into some horrible situation like the Raiders or Cardinals.
