Giants PS player Dre Miller

YANKEE28 : 1/19/2023 2:17 pm
The Giants have a quick video posted of the team breaking practice following this afternoons workout.

A player I noticed in the video is Dre Miller, who was standing alongside Lawrence Cager. Miller looks thicker than Cager (Miller is now wearing #45- he wore #43 during training camp) and both are players listed as TE's.

For me, Miller was one of the most impressive Giants players I saw this preseason. He played well enough that I really believe he would have made the 53 man roster if not for the injury.

Once he was healed and could pass a physical, it was no surprise that the Giants immediately re-signed him.

Early moves by Joe Schoen was to draft TE Daniel Bellinger and to sign TE Austin Allen as an UDFA. Both players attended the Combine and what stood out for both was their 3 cone drill (in fact, Allen was the best 3 cone (7.00) of any TE, while Bellinger was closely behind with a 7.05).

Though not at the Combine, Miller ran a blazing 6.87 3 cone drill- apparently a number that matters to Schoen with TEs. Miller was a wide receiver in college putting up an impressive 19 reps @225 and having a 37 inch vertical leap but from the day he was signed as an UDFA from Maine, the Giants have called him a TE.

Its highly unlikely we will see Miller this season, but I see him as part of bright future in the Giants offense.

just want to say really appreciate your post Y28!

In camp, I was very intrigued by Miller (I think he was Andre at the time). Unfortunate that he broke his forearm. Glad he's back in the fold.
Good post!

We tend to forget the PS players, but they practice each day with the roster players and participate in the meetings.

The Giants likely have several that will make the roster and contribute next year, along with the 11 draft picks we will have in April.

I have never been a fan of high priced Free Agent signings, and I hope the CAP dollars the Giants have available will be going to extend current roster players.

I know he was viewed as a project

But I was actually shocked he never made his way up to the roster this year, particularly when we were thin at TE. Heard a lot of good things about him during camp.
UMaine baby!!!

Black Bears. My time there in the 1980’s is a fog. Little known fact some my know - comedian Nick DePaulo (sic) played some football at UMaine.

Out of high school, Miller was academically ineligible for a college football scholarship.

He has worked hard (moved from 2 JC's to Maine) to overcome that, but I think a year on the PS to master the Giants playbook benefits both him and the team. And he was moved to a position he didn't play in college.

Plus at TE he really should carry a bit more mass. As a WR TE fine, but if he's going to be blocking LB's at probably closer to 230 then 250 it could be tough.

does ring a bell, and a big reason why he was thought of--certainly made sense to me--as a project, along with the position switch. A year to learn the playbook and add muscle all over.

As said multiple times above, Y28, your nuggets fascinate and often actionable.

+1 I always read your Thread Posts right away! I love hearing the back stories of the bottom of the roster guys, especially the under dogs with the potential to break out!
Wish I could be more optimistic about this

He’s listed at 6’3”, 220. Now, I’m not saying he can’t be an effective player but don’t tell me he’s a TE. Even if he’s 10/20 lbs heavier he’s not going to have to size to block like a TE. He’s not going to be able to handle 250 lb LBs much less DEs which your average 6’5” 250+ lb TE is expected to deal with. We’ve seen Evan Engram. It wasn’t pretty.
