Two steps forward, one step back

Greg from LI : 1/21/2023 11:03 pm
It was still a fun ride and an encouraging season despite this painful ending. I didn’t think this team would win more than five games. Now it’s up to Joe Schoen to build up the roster. Continue to improve the OL, get a playmaking receiver or two, and for the love of God get competent linebackers.

This was a pleasantly surprising season for the new regime but now it’s time to get to work on the heavy lifting.
Agreed 100%

no matter what happened tonight, there is a lot to be proud of but still alot of work to do

We we’re running QB sneak on 3rd and 9

We need to make another big leap forward next year

I think getting the ever loving shit kicked out of them by their bitterest rival qualifies
Man, Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor were our QBs

It's like Schoen just wanted to piss Greg off
Yup, the real work starts now
dpinzow : 1/21/2023 11:06 pm : link
It's up to Schoen to close that talent gap between us and Philly/Dallas. Daboll proved he can do a lot with a thin roster. Now Schoen has to improve the talent level and hit on these draft picks
OP is spot on

Assume the step back is the brutal loss tonight …

He sure looked the part tonight, didn’t he?

He’s better than I thought he was but the hot air over the past week about how he was a top 5 QB and a budding superstar was absolutely laughable.
Agreed
widmerseyebrow : 1/21/2023 11:09 pm : link
There aren't many positions on this team where we can't use the best player available next draft.
Daboll did well this year
GiantGrit : 1/21/2023 11:11 pm : link
Schoen had both arms basically tied behind his back. Lets see what he does. Neal gets the nod at RT but I'm concerned. A lot of other question marks as well.

I agree with everything you said, but Jones & Barkley are enormous decisions. It’s hard to say the future is bright without knowing what the plan is there. I think Jones should come back but not at any price. He was not good tonight.
I'm disappointed, but not upset

Giant did so much better this year than I ever could have imagined. Best NY Football season in over a decade.
Yup, absolutely
Greg from LI : 1/21/2023 11:19 pm : link
I agree that he’s shown he can be a reasonably solid starter, and maybe better than that with improvements in offensive supporting cast. How much can you allot to him, though, without hampering your ability to upgrade the talent around him?

Barkley had a good season but I am a firm believer in building a running game primarily behind a strong OL. Look at the Eagles - none of their backs are anything special. You can find effective running backs relatively cheap if they have decent blocks to follow.
11 draft picks and the 3rd most cap space
moespree : 1/21/2023 11:20 pm : link
Have to nail the offseason. Upgrade the talent level on all fronts. Have to do it to take the next step.
If we lost to any other team besides the eagles or the cowboys
Essex : 1/21/2023 11:21 pm : link
I probably would have a different opinion on the larger picture. It’s hard right now to get that embarrassed by the Eagles in front of the whole wide world and end your season like that.

Much of that cap space will vaporize if you resign Barkley and Jones.
No steps back...
rnargi : 1/21/2023 11:22 pm : link
Wildly exceeded expectations. Wildly. They didn't take a step back in this game. They simply got as far as they could go. Simply couldn't take the NEXT step.

Indeed. This off-season offers enormous opportunity to truly turn the tide for the team….IF Schoen gets it right, and hopefully has a little luck as well.
Jones...
Bill E : 1/21/2023 11:28 pm : link
...laid an egg tonight. No doubt.
But that's true of the entire team.
Not sure what to make of tonight's performance, but it is hard to understand how the entire team came out so unprepared.
I think that's the first time we've seen this all year?

Either way, tonight sucked! But I won't let it ruin the fun ride this season has been.
Tonight was an example of where they need to improve.
Matt M. : 1/21/2023 11:39 pm : link
It both exposed the spots we have known were weaknesses, but also highlighted the Eagles true strengths. They are dominant at the LOS on both sides of the ball.

On O, I am optimistic about the future of the OL. I think Neal will improve and show why he was drafted high. He has the talent and showed it at times. If he takes that step, they are set at OT and Gates should move back to OC. They have a number of guys who should compete for one or both OG positions in Ezeudu, Bredeson, McKeethan, Feliciano. Lemieux might be nice for depth, but I wouldn't count on him to start. They need to draft at least one interior OL in the first 3 rounds and likely add one via FA.

On D, they need a lot more depth at DL and possibly think about a more traditional 3-4 or 4-3. Either way, we need huge improvements at ILB.

Sorry but I disagree. This team was overmatched and not in the same league as the Eagles. In no way does that diminished the accomplishments of this season. If you thought the Giants could go toe to toe with the Eagles then I don't know what to tell you

Best QB in the NFC, remember that?

the need of quality players across lots and lots of positions. The rebuild will probably take TWO off seasons plus less injuries next few seasons.

Strong possibility that we win just 6 to 8 games next season rather than reach double digits wins.
I did not see a step back ...
DefenseWins : 1/22/2023 7:33 am : link
if anything, we had unrealistic expectations last night from a matchup a few weeks ago in a meaningless game.

Nothing changed with the team.

The game last night looked very similar to what we saw in week 14.
I agree with Greg in that
section125 : 1/22/2023 8:02 am : link
a blow out loss is what will be remembered as the step back. But I think a close loss would have been worse. Bunch of what ifs would have lingered...

Players learn and coaches learn. PLenty of tape for everyone to look at for improvements. I did not think what little I watched was a well coached game.

A game like this exposes all the areas of weakness that may have been glossed over after the Minny win and re-enforces what SChoen and Daboll knew.

It was an unexpectedly good year. How many predicted a trip to the final 8? I think most of us were in the 6 win at best category.

It wasn't laughable, it was overreaction. Just like the dweebs that will re-emerge to denigrate him.

He is in the 8-12 range.

Last night's coaching job was as bad as the Detroit game.
