My thoughts after watching yesterday's game

JoeyBigBlue : 1/22/2023 1:08 pm
What at an embarrassing display last night on National TV. The Giants were physical manhandled on both lines of scrimmage the Eagles blew out the Giants 38-7. It became pretty clear in the first drive where Jones took a sack on the 3rd down that we couldn't block the Eagles front. I knew we were in for long night after that. Not being competitive in the game really took away from a positive season. A lot of questions have to be answered by the front office, this offseason. Here are my thoughts on each individual position going forward.

QB Daniel Jones- I think he showed enough this offseason to warrant bringing back on a short term contract, or on a franchise tag. My preference right now is bringing him back on a franchise tag. I think he's a middle of the pack QB that you can win with, but you need the right pieces around him. I think the Franchise tag would be the perfect solution for next season. I need to see more growth around a better supporting cast. I'm not ready to commit to him long term.

RB Saquon Barkley - Barkley had a nice season coming back from an ACL tear in 2020. He seemed to really slowed down as the season went on, and the carries piled on. Yesterday I saw big red flag, that leads to believe that he should be left go. In the third quarter he broke a big run took an angle on the safety. Rookie Saquon Barkley would of taken that play to the house, but this Saquon got ran down by the safety. That can happen with a guy you are committing big bucks for. Saquon is a great kid, but unless he is taking an undervalued contract, he can leave in Free Agency.

WRs - Schoen has his work cut out for him here. He needs to find two starters. Hodgins was a nice find and compete for a No. 2 slot. James and Slayton are free agents. Slayton could be brought back at the right price as a No. 4 receiver, but he can't be a starter. He's just way too inconsistent and very SOFT.

OTs- Andrew Thomas is a cornerstone player that needs to be extended. He was excellent his season and seems to be getting better every season. Evan Neal worries the hell out of me. He will be a very good run blocker, but his pass blocking leaves a lot to be desired. I didn't see a ton of growth in his pass blocking this season, so I am skeptical that he will be an elite right tackle, like he was drafted to be. The swing tackle Tyre Phillips was fine.

Interior Linemen. The Giants need a starting Center badly. Feliciano had a couple decent games, but he is not the answer long term. Nick Gates is a Free Agent, and I would bring him back as the center. I liked what I saw out of Ezeudu who was progressing nicely, but unfortunately went down with an ACL. Hopefully he can heal and compete for the LG spot next season. Bredeson and Glowinski were fine. Glowinski has a big cap number for next season so we are stuck with him. He's not great in pass protection, but he's dependable.

Edge Rusher. Kayvon Thibodeaux started showing flashes towards the end of the season. He has a good motor and has a ton of confidence. He needs a good offseason in the weight room to get stronger and learn more pass rush moves. He was drafted 5th overall and we need him to develop in a dominant pass rusher. I still have my doubts he will be a 15 sack guy, but if he can be a solid 10 sack guy with good run defense, we can live with that. Azeez Ojulari had a very frustrating season. The guy suffered from a ton of lower leg injuries and missed a ton of time. When did play, he was disruptive. I hope he heals this offseason and can come back 100% this season. If he has another season like this one, then he is an injury prone player and can't be counted on. Jihad Ward and Oshane Ximenes are free agents. Ward was solid Edge run defender and a good locker room guy. I would bring him back at the right price. Ximenes can walk.

DT. Along with Andrew Thomas, Dexter Lawrence is a cornerstone player for this franchise. He really exploded on the scene this season and had a monster year. He was excellent rushing the passer and playing the run. I hope we extend him long term this offseason. Leonard Williams had a disappointing season IMO. For the first time as a Giant, he had a ton of injuries and missed a lot of time. He carries a big cap number for next season under his current contract. I would let him play out his contract and let him walk in 2024. I would not extend him and he is getting older and seems to be slowing down. If he's great next season, we can be brought back at the right price. Justin Ellis is a free agent, and can go elsewhere. The guy was awful this season. IMO the worse player on the team. Ryder Anderson was a nice player, that I like for depth. With Williams pending Free Agency, this is a position that needs to address in the draft. The Giants lack depth on the D-Line.

ILB- This group was disaster plain and simple. They sucked against the run and the pass. Other then Micah McFadden who is nice depth, Schoen has to rebuild this entire unit.

Corner - Corner is a huge need on this team. This position needs to be addressed in the draft. Adoree will be on the last year of his contract next season as the No. 1 corner. Jackson is solid, but not highly dependable. He has missed time in every season he has played. We need a corner groom opposite him for next season. Aaron Robinson comes back next season from another injury filled season. Two seasons in a row where he has missed significant time. The guy isn't dependable IMO. Flott got better as the season went on. He needs a good offseason in the weight room to get stronger. He can be the nickle next season and compete for the No. 2 position in 2024. Holmes had his moments, but can't be a guy that more than a depth piece.

Safety. - Probably the deepest position on the team. Julian Love is a free agent. He should be brought back on a reasonable contract. The guy is a solid player and a good leader. McKinney was having a good season until the bye week injury. He will be motivated to have a great season as he will be a free agent in 2024. Pinnock and Belton were nice backups. Belton should develop into a player for the future.

That Saquon play

Really not sure how so many people came away with the awful take he got ran down.

Go back and watch it. The safety actually started in a dead sprint 2-3 yards ahead of Saquon and took an angle.

I’ve seen the play. Barkley had a good yard to yards of separation when he took the play towards the left side of the field. A rookie Saquon breaks that play and scores a TD IMO.
If Jones is not the long term answer who do you see as his replacement

I knew this game was pretty much going to go the shegals way

in the 1st quarter when Hurts completed that 32 yard pass. There was zero pressure, he just took his time and and heaved it down field.

He could be be. But he needs to prove it with another good season. Let’s see what he does with a better supporting cast at WR. If he isn’t great in 2023, than we go get a QB in 2024 (which is a stronger draft class than this one).

I've been aware of this for a while, SB does not have breakaway speed.
