Watching Dallas-SF Game -- What Jumps Off the Screen

M.S. : 1/23/2023 6:58 am

Is the sheer violence both teams played (especially the 49ers) at the line of scrimmage. The 49ers defense reminded me of the Giants from the mid-1980s. Watching a game like that can be a blueprint for one's draft plans -- find players who arrive at the ball with bad intentions. Very bad intentions.
Wholeheartedly agree brother

Back in the LT days, if you doubled or tripled him, it opened up all kinds of opportunities for the rest of the defense. It was (and is) a recipe for defensive dominance. We have some pieces but are still short. Cover the TE and WR's, keep the contain and the pass rush will get there.

This - the speed of both teams is stunning.

I like Dak, but he is just not that guy. Like Cousins, Carr or Tannehill, he is good enough to get to the dance but not quite good enough to get home.

LB speed and offensive play making ability… Parsons is all over the field and Fred Warner dropping into coverage is incredible. On offense, we don’t have anyone (including SB) who’s close to Lamb, Kittle, Samuels or McCafferty. On a positive note, neither QB is as good as DJ, and Daboll is better than McCarthy. I pray Dan Quinn gets a HC job this go around.

Nice player but not an impact player. Safeties can be found lower in draft.
You saw that with the Eagles also
Tom from LI : 1/23/2023 8:23 am : link
They were faster and more violent than the Giants on both sides of the ball.

Kind of demoralizing because it really brings to attention how big the talent gap is.

I agree. I know they tried signing him to an extension during the bye week. He made a comment saying he would only sign a contract for what he is worth.
I think he over estimates his worth. I would let him walk also.
The most interesting stat to me in the game
rnargi : 1/23/2023 8:27 am : link
Was that Dallas held the ball for less that 14 minutes over the final 3 quarters. SF shortened the game brilliantly.

I admit I kind of like that team and their players. Lynch tore down and rebuilt that team while we were still in the doldrums. Kittle is like a modern Bavaro. Deebo is their catalyst. Their defense tends to adjust and get stronger as the game goes on.the remind me of an old NFC east team and we should try to emulate them. They are winning with there third string rookie QB. they CAN handle Philly.
All good comments

the difference in quality of the Giants team vs Dallas and SF, but in the TIME it takes to achieve that quality. Neither Dallas nor SF has won a Super Bowl during the 2000s.

What the Giants achieved this season was truly amazing. Despite the pounding we took on Saturday and the obvious weaknesses we still have on the team, Giants fans have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, or disappointed about.

Shanahan will make this a game like every other postseason game his team participates in.

Dallas utterly surprised me how good they were yesterday. Quinn limited Shanahan's run game better than anyone else in quite some time, for at least the first 2 1/2 quarters. Crazy DL/LB speed taking down Purdy, Deebo, and others behind the LOS. YAC was limited quite a lot.

That's what my eyes told me yesterday, to explain how the Niners went from a 35 PPG machine recently to resembling the Harbaugh era teams with Alex Smith.

While I feel the current 49ers are better than last year's team, Dallas surprisingly improved a ton, because last year's team would've gotten killed yesterday otherwise. That playoff game was only close because the Niners suffered injuries to Bosa and Warner, and even Garoppolo.

As far as the Eagles, they look very tough and are certainly strong. But it's a game of matchups as you know, and I can't tell quite yet how that will go down.

FWIW, the two teams played at the LINC last year and the Eagles kicked the Niners OL ass in the beginning but then they figured it out and won, but probably because Hurts wasn't quite what he is now.

I think it will be a good battle, but I respect seeing SF as the underdog in this game.

Purdy is getting it done and is a feel-good story

PatersonPlank : 1/23/2023 9:44 am : link
We have no one even close to Greenlaw (#57) and Warner (#54). These guys were making tackles, covering passes, even getting interceptions. They were all over the place. This is a gaping hole for us
I Agree With Eric
Aloha Alan : 1/23/2023 9:51 am : link
I think the Eagles will clobber the 49ers unfortunately. I also think (and this makes me sick) that if the Eagles play like they did against us, no one is winning the Super Bowl except them. They appear to be the most complete and dominant team out of the four remaining.
SF has the #1 defense in football
PatersonPlank : 1/23/2023 9:54 am : link
I don't think anyone is killing them. When you win the LOS all of a sudden everything changes, and your skill players don't look so shiny anymore. I think the 49ers will terrorize Hurts, and I also think the offense with Deebo and McCaffrey will be able to move the ball
I'm probably in the vast minority, but I dont see a team remaining
Dinger : 1/23/2023 10:09 am : link
that can beat the Eagles. Maybe SF will keep them from scoring as easily or as much as us, but I also don't see SF scoring against the Eagles Defense. The Eagles OL and DL are better and will be the reason they win the SB. I think the Bengals stand the best chance of beating them because Burrow is as goo a QB if not better than Mahomes, Though mahomes is the better athlete. But Burrow has a lot of really good weapons. I still think the Eagles beat the bengals in the SB.
I think SF's defensive numbers are a bit inflated
Greg from LI : 1/23/2023 10:10 am : link
They played a *very* weak schedule. Before Dallas, the only really standout offense they'd faced all year was the Chiefs, who smoked them.

Same could be said for the Eagles. Entire division benefited from our schedule.

Whenever the Eagles played an offense that could actually put pressure on them, they scored points.

you are certainly entitled to your opinion that the Niners won't look so good against the Eagles. But the point of this thread was how good both defenses were. The Eagles may (or may not) wipe the floor with the Niners, but that doesn't mean the Niners don't have a terrific defense (and one that we can envy).
Hurts is less effective with pressure...
KingBlue : 1/23/2023 10:40 am : link
SF will pressure Hurts all day and if he escapes the middle tier of SF defense led By Warner will be up to the task.

Offensively, Sf has the weapons to challenge Eagles defense.

I expect a comfortable SF win.

San Fran will put pressure on Hurts, it's just a question of how much they can contain him. Hurts looks to bail immediately.

As I have said, teams with weapons move the ball and score on the Eagles. Purdy is the big question mark and Shannhan needs to call an outstanding game.

Rethinking my post after re-reading some others on here....
Dinger : 1/23/2023 11:15 am : link
I think Shanahan is probably the best coach in the league right now. If he can somehow out coach that Ass in Philly, I think maybe they can win. Hell, McCaffery seemed to only be on the field for 3rd downs and he's one of the top 3 most talented players on that team. Deebo, who I think is their MOST talented was used as a decoy for that game. Shanahan knows that all you need to do is win. It doesn't have to be pretty. So maybe that's SF's advantage.....I hope!

The 49ers played a very physical violent game yesterday and it’s tough to play like that again when the Eagles pretty much had a cake walk and a bye week. The Giants game was not physical at all.

Dallas is only a little better than the Giants and the 49ers are going to need Purdy to play 1000x better if they have a chance. The Eagles are healthy again. If Garaplo was healthy I think it will be a better game. I’m just sold on SF coming in after that physical game and doing it again.

Sy'56 2018 Draft Thoughts on Linebacker Fred Warner
M.S. : 1/23/2023 2:30 pm : link

A few excerpts which were dead-on:

"Quick twitched and fast to accelerate straight lines, makes an impact athletically... a hard-nosed bruiser, wants to punch guys in the mouth... scrapes over the top of the blockers and finds his lanes... Warner is a jack of all trades run stuffer. He hits hard, plays with an aggressive style, and will make tackles all over the field. He enjoys the role of an on-field bully."

I want guys on defense who "...want to punch guys in the mouth." I'll take that for the offensive line as well.

Me too. If we had one of these two teams last week I really feel the result would have been different. Would we have won? Not saying that but I think the game would have been much different . 9ers gonna have to play even better next week . They are gonna need more than 1td and 4 FGs . May need 4 TDs and 1 FG

SF's skill position guys top to bottom is up there with the best of all time between CMC, Kittle, Deebo and Aiyuk. Given the talent on that team and how well coached they are, I don't think there's any shot it's some kind of lopsided blowout.
