I'm sick of Tony Romo.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/23/2023 6:30 pm
He was DREADFUL in that Bengals-Bills game yesterday. The very first drive as the Bengals are seemingly getting whatever they want on offense, Romo is singing the praises of Leslie Frazier & why he should get a HC gig. Then, on an Allen throw that was so obvious of an incompletion even my daughter wouldn't argue, he is ?ing whether it's a fumble or not. Even Gene Steratore sounded miffed about what Romo was saying. To top it off, Romo gives great insight in that Mahomes' injury might affect his athleticism. Really Tony? Mahomes on a bum ankle might hurt his ability to make plays? GTFO!

Most importantly, the dude doesn't STFU. Tony, it is okay to let the game breathe. We don't need you chiming in every five seconds.

I'm not saying CBS should bring back Phil-he's an all time great Giant, but I was enamored with Simms in the booth-but CBS can do a helluva better for their supposed 1st team.

wasn't ever enamored with Simmms.
At first

I liked him in the booth. After a couple of seasons he’s worse in the booth than he was on the field.
Romo started his career strong
DieHard : 1/23/2023 6:36 pm : link
He was great when he kept it relatively dialed down and just stuck to the plays on the field.

2018 Patriots-Chiefs playoff game: winning drive

But as you said, he just can't stop himself from gabbing, and instead of analysis he's too wrapped with big picture narratives. I think some journalist compared him to a human Labrador retriever in the booth, and that comparison stuck with me.
Mark Sanchez
upnyg : 1/23/2023 6:37 pm : link
is better than Romo in the booth
Romo without question talks too much during broadcast.
chick310 : 1/23/2023 6:37 pm : link
Don't think he does a bad job, but he should stop trying to exactly predict what comes next for the upcoming play.

Not that he doesn't predict things at a reasonably high % but it's not needed for the broadcast and the enjoyment of the viewer. Besides, I think he does it to mostly prop up his own ego and have Jim Nantz tell him how astute he is.
Not a fan of Romo in the booth
Jay on the Island : 1/23/2023 6:41 pm : link
But Mark Sanchez is surprisingly good as an analyst.
He stinks but I tune it all out
UConn4523 : 1/23/2023 6:43 pm : link
there’s only a handful of commentators that enhance the sports experience and the NFL doesn’t really have any. John Anik for UFC is the best in sports right now, IMO.

This seems to happen with all the top NFL color guys. Everyone loves them at first, but hates them shortly after. Even Madden wasn't immune to this
Good lord, he's terrible.
MOOPS : 1/23/2023 6:47 pm : link
Can't shut his yap for a second and everything that comes out sounds like mental checkers describing a chess game.
We really don't need every stupid thought that crosses his mind.

Pretty sure Phil could do a better job

I can't stand Romo either.

One of many, many reasons why i watch less NFL football than ever. Almost none now
Hey ease up on Phil.
Giant John : 1/23/2023 7:09 pm : link
He did a better job on the next play after being hit by RW.
I liked Romo in the beginning
CheddarPlax : 1/23/2023 7:12 pm : link
Because he was sometimes able to find the balance between good analysis and entertaining “fan of the game”. I actually feel like he has some Madden in him in that respect. He often predicts the play before it happens, but he’s not a flavorless robot like Aikman. He has the ability to add his personality in, which livens up the broadcast (again, a trait similar to Madden, but I’m NOT making any real comparisons here).

But I completely agree that he needs to be reeled back in. His inability to let the game unfold in certain moments is what holds him back from being really good. Perhaps a muzzle, or some Xanax, would serve him well.

Doesn’t matter who the announcers are.
Tony's very obvious problem
KeoweeFan : 1/23/2023 7:35 pm : link
is that he approaches the role with the arrogant assumption that the audience understands he was the greatest QB ever, and thus he KNOWS what every QB is thinking or should be thinking (e.g. "he should have known that..."). His overall analysis is poor.

I get the feeling that Nance also wishes he had a different partner.

Maybe it's the difference between college ball and the Pros but the analysis on college games tend to be a lot more informative. Herbstreet is a great example and should be elevated to the "next" level.
Meh

Everyone is a know-it-all. Not the main reason why Romo is annoying though.
Been asking this from the time he started on CBS:
Tom in NY : 1/23/2023 7:45 pm : link
Does anyone (Director? Producer?) ever talk to Romo and tell him to tone it down by about 50%? The volume and quantity of his speaking is way over the top.

Yes, Mark Sanchez has been almost shockingly good. A refreshing change from Romo.
Only a few guys I can listen to. Romo is defintely not one.
Dinger : 1/23/2023 7:52 pm : link
I liked listening to Trent Green. Not a lot of hyperbole. Olsen is ok, but sometimes he falls into the common thinking of i need to comment on EVERY play about a particular player and I need to go in depth. One of the reasons I like the Manningcast is they don't have to speak all the time and tell me how great this or that player has been all season or trot out some superflous stats. I like Tirico sometimes and the play by play guy who was paired with Green when they did our game was decent. To me, I need the down distance maybe a couple of the players names involved in the play or something happening off screen thats relevant to the game...but less is more.

He’s absolutely unbearable.
hated him in the booth from day one
japanhead : 1/23/2023 8:09 pm : link
he sounds like a giddy schoolboy half the time.

im beyond tired of ex-cowboys in the booth. romo, aikman, moose..

enough already
I guess I'm in the minority, but I like him.
barens : 1/23/2023 8:19 pm : link
He's one of the few ex football players that's not full of himself, or considers their opinions fact. He breaks down the game without sounding like a know-it-all, i don't understand the problem with that.

I didn't realize it was him week one until the second half. I remember being shocked at how good he was at it. I remember Hard Knocks when the Jets were featured. Mark Sanchez came across as a very socially awkward douchebag. His teammates obviously didn't love him and Erik Ainge later confirmed that when he left the Jets.

Good for him as he has a bright future as an analyst and most importantly he comes across as completely unbiased which is becoming more rare each year.

He is awful
moespree : 1/23/2023 9:27 pm : link
Screams on the top of his lungs, sometimes completely incoherently.

Also it's clear CBS is desperately trying to make him Madden with his "Romo Vision" where they allow him to say "pause" and draw all over the screen. He's about as far away from Madden as can be.
My commentator moment of the day
eric2425ny : 1/23/2023 9:29 pm : link
was when my wife who rarely watches football was watching the fox pre game with me and she’s like “Jesus, who is this guy, he looks like he’s 80 years old, time to give someone else a shot” referring to Bradshaw lol. I’m like he’s 74, Johnson is 79.
I don’t know what is is with broadcasters
djm : 1/23/2023 9:31 pm : link
And why I totally hate and despise some, while liking others. Why do I like Romo but conversely want to light myself on fire when Collinsworth is in the booth? I truly don’t know why. They both talk too much. I guess it’s in the inflection.

I like romo but empathize with people who don’t. I get the whole Collinsworth effect.

I thought Terry Bradshaw was 74 in 2002. But crazy that he's been doing Fox NFL Sunday since 1994. I can recall that first episode like it was yesterday.

I actually liked him initially like most people. Clearly a bright football mind and a seemingly likable guy.

But he is just so damn goofy it’s cringeworthy. Just the way he was taking to Nantz was brutal. He doesn’t know when to shut up, which is something that I’m sure has been mentioned a lot on this thread. The execs needs to give him a quick talk on it.
Just now?
David B. : 1/23/2023 10:43 pm : link
I've been sick of him since the day he became the Dallas QB.

His only saving grace is that in the biggest moments of his career on the field, he screwed the pooch.

Just silly money for these guys.

yup, I agree completely. The network never understand that nobody turns on a game for the announcers, but they MIGHT turn it off.

You have to be competent, you have to be smart, but you also have to have that magical mix of chemistry and personality, while also being able to allow the game to breathe. FOX's teams don't drive me crazy, for example, but they all sound the same to me.

Sanchez has to work on his delivery a bit, but he's definitely on the rise. I really liked his work on Giants-Packers, especially when he called out Rodgers' hand-signal that he was going to Lazard on that final 4th and 2 seconds before it happened.
