The Texans will be interviewing Giants OC Mike Kafka for a second time for their head coaching opening, per source.
Kafka has interviewed for 3 of 5 head coaching vacancies after helping the Giants turn their offense around this season.
I'd obviously prefer to have him back, but I trust Daboll to replace him if he gets a new gig. Another year, another OC for Jones in that case.
Makes sense that the 2nd round will all be in person.
Frankly, Houston has already interviewed a lot of candidates with much stronger credentials.
Kafka's resume now has one year as an OC, and this was the first time (at any level) that he has called plays.
I credit the Giants for signing him last year-since league wide the opinions of him are strong, but IMHO its simply too early in his career to be a HC.
Problem for any HC there is that ownership will pour money into the team and won’t have enough to show for it after 2-3 years. So a new HC did all that work, maybe gets his team to a level of playoff contender, and is out the door when a coaching change looks like he can get 2 more wins per season and get to the playoffs.

It's also a swamp of an ownership group that just seems weird and difficult to ever have success with. Hope for his own sake he doesn't take that job.
Seriously? Sometimes I feel like there is a league consensus lead by Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles to somehow, any way possible screw the New York Giants, even if they feel it may not be the best move for their team.
This is utterly ridiculous.
Schoen needs to really bear his teeth on this. I think 1/2 of Schoen's time should be dedicated to inside deals, maneuverings, etc solely based on screwing the Eagles. I am 1/2 thinking that I barely care if the Giants improve if it somehow screws the Eagles. My hate is visceral...it runs that deep. Philthy losing at this point is better than the Giants winning.
Bill O'Brien had some good moments there, but other than that, it's been mostly a shitshow for Houston. Terrible look to have back-to-back one-and-dones. I have no idea why they hired Lovie in the first place. He hasn't done shit in the NFL since 2012 and he flamed out at Illinois. And David Culley? Spare me.
ya mean like Daboll's position last year when he accepted?
any coordinator, is just about 95% going to accept a HC position over satying a coordinator, regardless of the team history. Now if he gets multiple offers, obviously he can pick and choose, but if he's offered the position, you can pretty much wave goodbye.....
The owner looks like an ass. Young Irsy.
This is why it was so nice for Schoen and Daboll to come as a package. Everyone is rowing in the same direction here (finally).

I don't really agree with this. I think that coordinators are extremely underrated in their ability to impact games and it is extremely difficult to find suitable replacements without taking a step back.
For example, GB, BUF, NE, LAR all lost their OCs for head coaching jobs and those teams all had arguably worse seasons offensively this year.
Best of luck to Kafka -- if he flunks out due to organizational incompetence, maybe we can take him back!
They fire head coaches every year lately, don't do it...

I disagree, if you are as young as Kafka, and you continue doing your job well...there will still be opportunity.
If you want to use Leftwich as an example, did you see that Tampa Bay offense this year? Tom Brady or not, the offense sucked, that's why there is no interest in Leftwich this time around, and he's looking for work.

#Texans will conduct a second interview with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on Wednesday, per a league source

There's only 32 of these jobs, you can't be too choosy. Byron Leftwich was in demand for a HC gig last year, this year he's out on the street.

That's the point though. Leftwich was in demand, he decided to wait it out for a better opportunity, and then he had a season from hell that sank his chances. You have to strike while the iron is hot.
You could argue that Kafka is in a better situation and can afford to wait it out, but what if the Giants are racked by injuries next year? What if the offense sputters? What if another young coordinator comes out of nowhere to become the hot candidate? What if the jobs available next year are just as bad? At some point you have to jump in, and these are competitive people who want to prove they're the best.
