Keep one cut one

Blackmax00 : 1/24/2023 11:46 am
I see talk about whether or not Leo is done. Obviously it's up to the GM and what they can do. However of all the guys on the D line who would you keep. Leo or Dex? Dex is a wrecking ball up the middle and stays healthy. I like Leo but he's good not great.
is this like f*&^, marry, kill?

I'll keep both. But Lawrence is obviously the younger, better, and thus more valuable player to the Giants.
I'll keep Dex

The 4 years apart in age the two are is a difference of "your best years are coming" vs "you've had your best years".
I'd prefer to keep Dexter Lawrence,

and I don't say that lightly since I like what Williams has to offer with pass rush. The trouble is going to be replacing him, since we ran into a problem like that when JPP was traded to the Buccaneers and we had nobody who could rush the passer from the edge until 2021/2022 (unless people liked Lorenzo Carter).
Our D line is Dex and Leonard.

That's it. Check the snap count. Leonard played extensively through a lot of injuries this year. Hopefully he heals up and gets back to his peak next year.
Rather tha cut him, I'd be looking at a reasonable extension and bringing in some additional help to lighten the load on those two.
Agree with Moops

Yesterday Schoen kidded the reporters about saying Leo would like to be back and would consider taking less to stay here.

Schoen thanked them for that and said he didn't say that in the exit interview.

Think he sets a value but if it gets too far apart between the parties he will let him go but I think they work out a extension.
Obviously

Dex is younger, but will also probably have a huge contract extension after next year, or they can franchise tag him after this season, so at least he's controllable for the next two seasons.

But he's the anchor of the defense, you have to lock him up at some point. Guys like him are not guys you let walk.
Not sure how this is even a debate

Dexter, for sure

How much is in salary? That’s all you can save by cutting him.
Once heard Bill Polian (I think) talk about managing the cap.

He said you identify your core players, pay them and keep them. The non-core guys? You have to let them go when it's time for them to get paid, then cycle through replacements. You love those guys, but you can't keep them because you can't pay them.

Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence are probably core, but yes, Williams probably falls out of the core soon.

I tried to figure who's core right now, and it's a pretty short list, not counting this season's rookies: Lawrence, Jones, Thomas, Williams. There are a lot of guys on the roster who the Giants probably would be happy to keep but won't pay much. Richie James... Darius Slayton... Fabian Moreau... Landon Collins... Nice to have, not core.
Its easy to say cut a player but

you have to fill the role they played. So is the plan to create MORE holes and then use resources we desperately need for WR, CB, IOL, and LB, and EDGE as well?

No that would be dumb...
