Not let me get this out of the way first. Taylor has WAY more real-game experience (53 starts) to Webb's one start. Both have been with multiple teams and Taylor is the guy who has played, not Webb.
But I thought Webb looked pretty good in the 2022 preseason. And in his only start of the year, against the Eagles, he made some plays and didn't make any costly mistakes. This despite playing with backups against one of the best defenses in football.
What also causes me to wonder is that when Taylor did play in garbage time this year, he threw one interception and fumbled twice. He seemed pretty reckless with the ball, and if I remember correctly, there were times in the preseason where I thought, "he got lucky there."
I don't even know if Webb is going to play another game, but I thought Webb did well this year when given a chance.
Normally, I would agree. But what did Webb do poorly when he played (preseason and regular season)?
I'd be surprised if they cut Taylor. Would leave a pretty big cap hit if so.

midget contest. does it matter?

I thought he looked ok, kind of like Daniel Jones-lite. Not someone I want starting games the team needs to win.
Webb looked very slow compared to Jones.
Honestly I don't have a ton of confidence in either of them winning an NFL regular season game. But given that scenario, I would go with the cheaper/younger guy (Webb); especially since he's apparently a real asset in terms of knowing the system (coaches kid, etc.).
Taylor is just not good anymore. And they paid him, that's the problem.
Regardless of Taylor's contract there is no guarantee he will be here. A rookie would easily be able to take his place cheaply.
I think Webb becomes our QB coach/ Off. Assistant.

I think you are underestimating the importance of having a QB in the meetings and on practice field in April-August who knew Daboll's offense

Giants’ backup QB Davis Webb, who was offered Buffalo’s QB coach job last off-season, has expressed interest in starting the transition from player to coach. After securing his first NFL start this season, Webb will consider making the jump to coaching for the right opportunity.
Webb did nothing when the game was in the early stages. He came on when the winner was already decided.
I wouldn't expect someone like you to use preseason games in your evaluation. There are a lot of preseason heroes turn out to be duds when they have to face starters every game.
So you’re way off base. :)
I am glad they Webb a start but I don’t have confidence in him as primary backup. Giants need to make the same deal with him they made last season and see if he can beat out Taylor. I guess you can’t designate a player as coach of the practice squad and keep him as a practice squad player too.
If we're going to lose all the games that Jones can't play in, we might as well replace them both.
Webb is probably a much better tactical coach than Taylor or Jones-primarily because Webb is more pocket pass and not running like a bunny.
I think the Giants may draft a developmental Qb in the middle rounds. That’s particularly interesting after Schoen scouting Howell so thoroughly last year and the news that he will start in Washington next season (at least for now).
But that's because he played versus the weakest competition and he knew the offense. Big advantage.
He did ok in his start versus the Eagles, but as someone said most of the damage was done at 19-0.
There's a reason why he's becoming a coach.
If Taylor is released, someone will pick him up.
No one is picking up Webb.
TT has a gunslinger mentality without a gunslinger arm, capable of great off-schedule plays and passes that end up nowhere near the target. Webb has a good arm but doesn’t look to push the ball downfield (where his accuracy is pretty bad).
Aside from this year, TT hasn’t been turnover prone. He’s as elusive as anyone outside of LJax. Once age robs him of that, I’d put him in Webb’s class…which is not starter-level.
Taylor is just not good anymore. And they paid him, that's the problem.
Agree. Tyrod isn’t the same player he was in Buffalo. He was absolute trash with the Texans (even considering circumstances) and he didn’t look that great in the action he got here. Disappointing bc I was hopeful with the signing.
