stole my idea from my first Vikings games preview: "The most realistic, best-case scenario for the Giants moving forward would probably be similar to their 1984 season. That was another Giants team that was supposed to finish dead last in the NFC East. They hung around .500, won three critical games in a row, but faded down the stretch, losing their last two games, including a 10-3 stinker against a bad New Orleans Saints team. The Giants backed into the playoffs on the next day when the Miami Dolphins beat the Dallas Cowboys. No one gave the Giants a chance in the Wild Card round as they had to travel to Anaheim to play a Los Angeles Rams team that crushed them during the regular season. The Giants pulled off a 16-13 upset. The loss the following week to the eventual Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers did not hurt so much because most knew this Giants team had pretty much gone as far as it could given its talent level at the time."
Also found it interesting how Banks called out Azeez Ojulari

Funny thing is I remember back then thinking the 49ers were going to blow the Giants out that day, and was surprised in how they made it somewhat of a game. The Giants pass rush played a key role in that.
I'd love to see the Giants add another pass rusher or two to the rotation. I envied the Eagles d-line this season.

I mentioned some of the parallels with the 1984 team when I did the Look Back thread with the Wild Card game at the Rams too. I wonder if they read any of the old newspaper articles ;)

to the 84 team. As Schoen said during his presser Mon. It starts up front, both sides of the ball, look for that to be a main focus (includes LB on defense). They will look to add talent that FITS THE CULTURE AND HOW THEY WANT TO DO THINGS.
This will not be Madden, where they will grab any big name they can. The biggest reason they want to retain Jones I think, is he FITS what they want out of the QB position. "Smart, Tough, Dependable".
They mentioned Barkley's dependability THIS season. If that weren't the case, there wouldn't even be any discussions.

There was a thread comparing this season to 2007 a while back
I said it reminded me if 84. Some posters thought I was kidding, I wasn’t.

"It starts up front, both sides of the ball, look for that to be a main focus"
This is a good thing if follows through on this. The perimeter spots certainly need attention but the biggest issue is still a fronts issue.
Interesting the franchise he just came from had former boss say this regarding Buff/Cincy, "That game we didn't get it done up front on either side the ball, and that starts with me."
We will see if he can execute better than his mentor.
I heard Rex Ryan say 14 teams will be looking for a QB and was saying the same thing. I don't know if he was just throwing out a number but it just takes one team.
Not only does he have to stop missing games, when he DOES play through injury, he has to do so effectively.
If you have the stomach, go back and watch him vs. the Eagles. He is completely ineffective and not even trying. Playoff game. Still disturbed with what we saw last Saturday from the whole team. The plan & effort just weren't there.

We aren’t nearly as close as in 84. We really still need a big talent infusion.8-10 players that are starting material or solid rotational guys. Hopefully we can fill in most this yr. I think we are two yrs away for real. It’s all gonna depend on the drafting.
I heard Rex Ryan say 14 teams will be looking for a QB and was saying the same thing. I don't know if he was just throwing out a number but it just takes one team.
Wow 14? Almost half the league? lol
There are definitely a handful. 14 seems a bit high.
When Bob said that they can't tag him because it eats up that 31 million immediately and it reduces their ability to maneuver in FA. This is something that I worried about when we all chat about it.

I think Team Jones has the leverage now.
It does seem like a lot but count them:
Definites:
1.Panthers
2.Commanders
3.Colts
4.Saints
5.Raiders
6.Falcons
Probably:
7.Titans
8.Ravens
9.Seahawks
10.Lions
You could make a case:
11.49ers
12.Texans
13.Packers
14.Buc's
And those are just the most likely. You need to add the Giants because DJ is a FA. 15. Weird things have happened in more recent NFL history. What if Tua retires for health reasons? Pats move away from (perceived primadonna) Mac Jones or the GM in Chicago wants his guy and moves on from Fields?
Either way all it takes is one desperate owner willing to overpay and there are at least three on that list.

If anything worries me about the Giants moving forward, it's this. Neal was a rookie and had a major injury so you can excuse his performance, but Schoen's OL free agent decisions (Glowinski, Feliciano) didn't work out very well. And Schoen was Beane's right-hand man when the Bills were whiffing on offensive linemen from 2018 forward. Maybe he just doesn't have a knack for it. I hope Brandon Brown or someone else on the management team has an eye for OL talent.
does not really have any 2023 leverage with other teams besides getting a nice fat check for at least one year a la Cousins. Giants will simply tag and if somebody especially a mediocre team needing a QB so badly wants to give two first rounders, it opens up a lot of options.

Given the needs and Money Spent, I give Shoen and Company High Marks for Patching a SURVIVABLE OL. Neal is a Major Question going forward. RT has become another island in the NFL, and thye best thing I can say about him is that "he looks like he MOGHT be a Guard". OL Punching and Blocking in space is alot like throwing...It's a complex movement built on Timing, and Strength and Speed amplify that ability...but you can't out athletic a lack of coordination. Eagles offensive linemen can excel in space because they are excellent Hand/Eye "throwing" atheletes. Thomas always showed that ability, while struggling with the NFL adjustment, and Poor Tackle/Guard Pairings. Nedal's struggles cannot be reduced to ONLY First Year Struggles... he may not have the ability to play in space.

Listen to the podcast. Bob explains in simple terms....there is no way the Giants can commit 43 million to next year's cap. They will not be able to do anything in UFA if they tag Jones and do not immediately trade/sign him long term. They will miss the UFA window. IF they truly want him, they will not use the unexclusive tag. Why would they let another team negotiate for them, and if they really want him the two firsts don't move the needle. I've been saying for months, there is no way the Giants CAN tag Jones.
Love that Bob and Carl say what most of us already know
When u compare DJ to the other guys and what they make$$ - TDs Yards per game being lower for DJ-who are they throwing to compared to DJ. It’s not even close. Bon Papa’s words.
Then throw in his OL has been the bottom 5 for all these years
Then throw in the coaching staffs have been shit until this year/ and has had 3 different playbooks already.
This is the reality for Jones. That said I think they’ll get it done. I do believe they both want this. Something like 5/200 and they have the QB that Schoen said outright they want to “build a team around.”
That may be true but I saw a few highlights that had Ojulari in them and he was dragging one leg. He was not much help out there.

What I thought was interesting is Bob Papa saying that if the Commanders hire Pat Schurmur as OC they might make a run at Jones.
The Giants better work out a deal prior to FA. Some team is going to pay him what Team Jones is looking for.
Banks tells it like it is, prepare for numbers you might not like if you are a Jones for modest pay out.
If you have the stomach, go back and watch him vs. the Eagles. He is completely ineffective and not even trying. Playoff game. Still disturbed with what we saw last Saturday from the whole team. The plan & effort just weren't there.

It's the agent's job to know his client's market value and advise him whether to enter free agency or not.

Jones can also have leverage if they know a team is willing to the money and picks.
I don't know if that market exists so that's a TBD for me.
And it will be a mistake that they are trying to get out of in a couple years.
