The Ringer on where the Giants go next

“Do you plan on re-signing Daniel?” was the very first question asked. “We’d like Daniel to be here,” Schoen responded, not exactly answering. Last spring, one of Schoen’s early moves as the newly hired Giants GM was to decline to pick up the quarterback’s $22.38 million fifth-year option, preferring to first see for himself how Jones might perform in his fourth NFL season. “He’s done everything that we’ve asked him to do,” Schoen said, speaking of a season in which Jones had career highs in completions, passing yards, rushing touchdowns, and quarterback rating, as well as a career low in turnovers. The Giants, despite having prioritized a rebuilding period, and in spite of one injury after another, made the playoffs and even won a round following a surprisingly merry 9-7-1 campaign. So now what to do about their soon-to-be free agent QB?

“Again, there’s a business side to it,” Schoen filibustered. “We haven’t went down that road yet.” Schoen had a similar answer to the second question in the presser, which was also about Jones, and to the fifth question, which was about Jones, too. “When you say you want Daniel back,” someone tried, “ideally, would you like that to be a long-term deal or a multiyear deal?” It was an inquiry as cleverly restructured as any NFL contract. But Schoen still wouldn’t put anything in ink. “We’re going to get into all that,” he said. “Again, it takes two. Both sides have got to have those conversations. We haven’t crossed that bridge yet. There’s tools at our disposal. Again, we’ll go through several scenarios.” On and on it went like that, one Schoen “again” after another for 28 minutes straight.

Article is mostly about how they might handle Jones.

season is a good time for the media.

They love it.
When Schoen said, "We're happy DJ is going to be here..."

I feel like there were two plausible interpretations - either he felt very confident that they'd come to agreement to keep Jones out of free agency, or if that didn't happen, that the team would not hesitate to tag him. But that he would do anything within reason to make certain he's the Giants' QB this fall.

Bingo
Say Schoen said ''We love Jones, we'll do whatever it takes''

...It would be pretty hard to have any negotiating leverage after that.

Something our previous lunkhead GM never understood, BTW.
The article offers zero insight

as is par for the course with The Ringer. They're basically one step up from a gossip tabloid when it comes to sports reportage and analysis. Check their up-to-date QB rankings, for example:

The Ringer's QB rankings as of Jan. 25

I won't even get into ranking Herbert above Burrow, but what kind of analysis is this? "Burrow’s arm is really the only thing keeping him from breaking into the most elite tier." Um, #1, he already is in the most elite tier, and #2, I don't see the Bengals struggling to overcome Burrow's lack of arm strength.

Yeah that really was a summary for a casual (at best) Giants fan and didn't offer any unique analysis or insight or predictions.
That's exactly

the way he needs to answer all player personnel questions, we want him here, Not unconditionally, I love DJ and believe he is good enough to win Championships with but at a price that is right. He is not a Elite QB of that status of a Mahomes, Brady, Burrow, Etc.
Schoen did exactly the right thing by declining the 5th year option
Ivan15 : 1/25/2023 3:36 pm : link
So that Year 4 became the contract year, put the pressure on Jones to produce and cleared the deck for a new QB if Jones didn’t produce. If Jones had only a slightly better season than last and had a 5th year to prove himself, we would be arguing over whether to re-sign him even worse than we are now and it likely would have continued for another season.
There is only 2 elite QB's in the NFL
Tom from LI : 1/25/2023 3:44 pm : link
Mahomes and Burrow.

The rest are franchise, has been, journeymen and rookies.

Those 2 pack it all into 1 complete QB package.

Wow, this is a terrible ranking, Dak #6? LMAO

even funnier than Hebert at 2.
There's a middle ground on DJ between Stay or Go:

If these negotiations go badly, they can use the franchise tag on him for 2023-24 and look to bring in a QB behind him and treat DJ as a bridge QB. I don't think anyone on either side wants that; it's sort of a last resort. I don't know who they'd get who could become the starter in two seasons, but it's possible.

If you could get Trey Lance for the Giants, would you want him? I think he's the kind of toolsy player Daboll could mold, but as I understand it, he was flat-out bad when he played for SF.

Katie Baker is a good writer, but that piece was meh. Then again, The Ringer isn't tailoring that article to BBIers, more of a casual sports fan. Hell, the other articles featured prominently on the homepage are about the Oscars & an article about '60 Songs That Explain the '90s'.

I think FT is more likely than not. My biggest fear is that DJ plays hard ball and threatens to not show up until game 9. Which really forces the Giants to move on in some way.

Not interested in Trey Lance at the price I think they would want. Sure I would give up a 3rd but not much else.

This intrigues me, too. Give up a third?
