It came up with my friends because one went to Minetta Tavern for his birthday last night, and thought it was really overrated (I kind of agree, mostly because when I went I was dissuaded from getting cheese on it by the waiter and regeret it to this day). Another friend chimed in that he prefers Shake Shack to MT, and then another mentioned that 7th Street’s burger is a comparable but better version of Shake Shack’s. Those to me are different “classes” of burger relative to MT, and my personal favorite Emily’s (which of course also has amazing pizza). I also just tried the smash version of the burger at Essex Market and thought that was great. A Brooklyn-based friend highlighted Red Hook Tavern as a favorite, but I haven’t been there yet. Others I haven't been to but were recommended are Polo Bar, 4 Charles, Au Cheval and Monkey Bar. Some casual Asian places that I’ve tried have really good burgers too, like Nowon and Bronson’s (although I’d generally rather get the chicken sandwiches from Asian spots).
Anyone have any thoughts on those or other recommendations?
best part is Blue Ribbon stays open until like 2a. I used to live directly across the street (100 Sullivan street). Many a late night out ended with my wife and I coming home, changing into sweatpants and heading across the street for burgers.
Shake Shack is superb but it's a fast food styled burger, so, yes, it's a different category.
There are many other great NYC burgers, from The Burger Joint (fast food style but awesome fun) to the Brindle Room, but MT takes it for me.
A classic is JG Melon. Shake Shack for a fast casual burger is the best. Burger Joint used to be very good.
Here's a good list with some of the ones you've mentioned already.

I like it on the jumbo English muffin.
Jackson Hole to me was always #1 in toppings on their burgers
But must like The best Chinese food is 4am, chinatown
a teacup full. He would go behind the curtain and down the hatch. Sorry for millering
I really want to try White Manna.
I also really want to try The Committed Pig in Morristown.
My favorite "fast food" type burger is Habit Burger. The Parsippany NJ location is my favorite. Just off 46 near the reservoir.
I think you mean JG Melon

+1 on Arthur's. Just a great burger every time. (and I've gone there for 30+ years) and I worked near White Manna in Hackensack and those sliders will not disappoint you.

Came here to say this. We stayed in tarrytown a few years ago before a game, went there for dinner. I dream if this burger
I agree with Producer, Shake Shack is more fast food, and belongs in another category. Their burgers are good, but they can’t stand up to a real sit down burger joint. And if we’re on the subject of best fast food burgers, The Habit is better than Shake Shack (and they have shakes too!).
Korzo in BK was a great burger, but it closed. Nobody Told Me on the UWS is really good too.
I just took my son to the Corner Bistro and I don't think it is a particularly great burger, its ok. I think Peter Luger's burger is insanely good (unlike the steak which is ok but nothing special).
I second this. My favorite burger in NYC.
Smashed (lower east side, around the corner from Katz's) is a little pricier but the quality is unreal
7th Street has blown up in the past year and now has locations all over the city

Does Arthur's still put pickles out on the bar to snack on like they were pretzels or peanuts?
Great burger spot and excellent recommendation.

Au Cheval just seems overrated to me. It's good, but I went there on opening night a few years ago based on the hype coming out of Chicago, and while I enjoyed the burger, I'd say that the fried bologna sandwich is better there than the burger anyway, and the aesthetic of the restaurant itself makes the experience more worthwhile. But it's not a burger worthy of a Dorsia reservation, IMO.
Melon's used to be my favorite burger in the city, but it's gone downhill quickly, and dramatically. I haven't had a really good burger there in years.
I haven't had 7th Street, but people whose opinions I generally agree with have raved about it. I am a Minetta fan (also get the marrow if you go to Minetta), and I'd throw Corner Bistro into the mix, too.
Dive bar so nothing fancy, but they have a really great burger.

Yah this place is great. Also love Burger Shack as well. But I'm a sucker for a good diner burger, we used to have so many little diners in the city. We used to go to Stavey's and Ambrosia at Stuy. Loved those pizza burgers.
Also in town, Pizza shop by Flour makes a damn good pie, pain in the ass to order, but worth it.
The lamb burger at Breslin used to be my favorite in the city.

And Jackson Hole was always fantastic, even though I think the original owners in Queens and 33rd St have sold.
Jackson Hole to me was always #1 in toppings on their burgers
Yeah Jackson Hole on the East Side was always my favorite back in the 90's when I lived in the City. I agree the toppings were awesome.
That sounds good!
