Any indication McGaughey is in danger of not being retained?

FranknWeezer : 1/25/2023 10:55 pm
Haven't looked up any rankings, etc., but to my eye...and based upon BBI reactions throughout the year...our ST unit was underperforming for most of the season.

Gillan never seemed to be able to consistently pin teams deep- way too many were 'hammered' through the end zone. He had a punt blocked where part of the problem was the noticeably slow process of him getting the ball off his foot. And some of us saw that earlier in the season and predicted just what would happen. We had a fugly fake, too, as I recall.

Richie James had those terrible fumbles early in the season and we never really broke a punt or kick return.

Coverage didn't seem that great, either.

Only positives were the always-deadly Gano, as well as the consistency of the LS, Kreiter.

ST never won us a game, though it arguably did the opposite at times.

McGaughey seems like a great guy (really enjoy his interviews), but his unit was subpar again this season. Maybe some of it is roster-related, which wouldn't be his fault. But I wonder if he's on thin ice. He'd better hope there's no up-and-comer waiting in the wings in Buffalo...
I'm guessing he stays

The roster was under-talented from the top down. When many of your starters on offense and defense would be backups and special-teamers on a more talented team, it only follows that you have career practice-squaders and street FAs filling in key special teams roles. And the results are fairly predictable. So I think he might get another year with more talented players to try and field an improved unit.

Or he might get fired by week's end, because I don't know what I'm talking about. Everything's in play right now!
Well you'd have to go back to Parcells

and do you blame the chef or do you blame the ingredients?
Yeah I don’t know..

if the best ST coaches in the world could have done much with this collection of bottom of the roster players.
Can't remember the last time Giants STs had a good season.

Our return men never return anything for a TD or even just a good/very good return multiple times in a season, it feels like. And our STs coverage guys haven't been all that impressive, either. Only player on STs that is good is Gano. Everyone else seems absolutely awful at their jobs on STs. I don't know if that's more on the players or the STs coach, or maybe both, but they need to get better.
When a bunch of your starters would be special team players

On other teams. Which in turn leaves scraping the bottom of the barrel for our ST players
Ultimately place kicking is the most important thing

and whatever McGaughey and Gano have going is working (McGaughey has had pretty good success with kickers and presuming he’s involved with identifying/assessing them during the draft/udfa process he’s also done well there). I’d be careful in tipping over the apple cart without first seeing if personnel improvements at the bottom of the roster will fix the coverage and return games. But man there’s a lot to fix

Punting has been a relative shitshow though, a lot of that is on the punter who is inconsistent at best, but coaching matters. Dixon seems to have had a bit of a minor renaissance in LA, although weather is obviously a factor. Avg and net avg higher than all but one of his 5 seasons in New York.

Punt Coverage is mid-tier at best, kickoff coverage is bottom 10.

Punt Returning is near bottom of the league on avg and it’s not like we were safe with it, 4 fumbles puts us bottom 10

Kick returning is more middle of the pack but towards the bottom of the middle. Security was good.

Some of the coverage and returning woes are personnel related the bottom of the roster was pressed into too much actual playing and replaced with lo

If you look around the league you'll see that good special teams are dominated by LBs and safeties who are non starters. Since Parcells and Belichik left we have rarely drafted LBs in the first three or four rounds and when we did they were built to play at the line of scrimmage rather than in the open field (see the Giants' trouble covering tight ends). And the Giants' team speed has been lacking for years. I've always thought those were the two reasons for a lack of athleticism on the coverage teams.

Also, if you want a dynamic returner it's likely to be a WR, RB or DB that also has a big impact on offense or defense. Someone like Jackson or Breida, rather than Brightwell or James (who doesn't seem to have the quick moves you would expect of a guy his size). Or it's someone drafted for his return abilities and isn't contributing elsewhere, something the Giants don't seem to do.
Special teams have been disappointing but the 2 specific failures

Gillen and James were individual screwups. Gillen is not even an average punter and may never learn how to punt inside the 20. They need competition there. James had one bad day. Punt returners are going to fumble one occasionally but that day was worse. I think he redeemed himself. If he never drops one but never returns one for more than 10 yards, I would be happy.

Frankn; You are right about the poor special teams. It seems we don’t get enough big returns (problem with scheme) and when we get one, there is a penalty (problem with individual ability and discipline). Regarding coverage problems, that is partly due to personnel (front office needs to find better bottom of the roster fits) and partly due to scheme. You never hear about the 2 guys who are dedicated special team players, Brown and Coughlin. For a while, Judge had us convinced that special teams were pretty good.
So even the bottom half of the roster was below average

+1. Special teams were the reason we lost Saturday. Let’s fix that and they should be our #1 priority going into the off season. Fire McGaughey and our future is bright.

If they let McGaughey go who would make the Gumbo!!
I alway enjoyed his candid interviews. He just rolled with the punches. When his guys got poached he just grabbed another…gumbo at its best!

Wait special teams did nothing. They didn't have to. Defense was horrible. Offense was horrible. All we did was PUNT
