Whatever happened to . . .

Nick Foles?

Some players have really interesting career trajectories. I thought it might be fun to explore why. I thought Foles would be interesting since it might shed some light on how to think about QB play.

Foles twice in his career has looked like a top 5 QB or at least close to it. His first year as a starter was epic and near MVP level. He can't keep a job, becomes a back up, and then takes a team on a SB run and wins the SB MVP. Gets a big deal and can't keep a job. Probably ends his career as a set piece in the Kayvon snow angel performance art exhibit.

What allowed him to be so epically good and then not? Not just once but twice? I don't really have answers. Just questions.

I agree on that
my guess he's a head case

has all the talent in the world, but needs the setting to be perfect to perform. That's why he never did anything outside of Philly. I think they knew how to work with him and play to his strengths.
It is a weird trajectory

Dude caught lightning in a bottle but the rent came due on his Faustian pact.
Predictability. The milkman, the paper boy .......

He should just go back to Philly as Hurts' backup. Seems to be the only place he plays well. Could probably play for another 5 years there
I liked Foles

really solid QB and just never had the opportunity to be "the Guy" once he did get that opportunity in Jacksonville he didn't play very well and then got hurt.
Sometimes these guys are headcases...

I think a guy like Jay Cutler is a good example of that (flashes talent then goes to crap). Doug Williams is another close example.

The most public headcase QB -- where all the talent in the world was there, but his head was not screwed on right is Jeff George.
His only good seasons were with RPO offenses

under Chip Kelly and Pederson, and the glass slipper never fit after that first season, when teams had tape to counterscheme. Foles is fine as a backup, but the longer he starts, the more he regresses to the mean.

Foles seems old school

Thibs had an open shot at him and the pocket presence wasn't good enough for him to even notice a ballistic missile coming at him
He reminds me of Jeff Hostetler somewhat

in that he can fill in for the starter long term and perform very well, but you don't want him as your franchise QB
