as head coach. The article is about the boys not retaining 5 assistant coaches so far and at the end of the article talks about something else might be going on and mentions that Payton's candidacy elsewhere seems to have bogged down suddenly for some reason.
It is speculation of course BUT, Jones has wanted Payton for a long time..

Big ? Is Dan Quinn continuing as DC. He has done an outstanding job as DC in Dallas. Do they re-sign VanderEsch who was terrific this year.
Not so sure they want to give up a first round draft pick for Payton.
The assistant coaches who left were on expiring contracts.
Personally imv Payton is overrated
It was real for sure…
TE Shultz, Vanderbilt Esch, S Wilson, G McGovern are FA. All played 70% of snaps.
I’m all for Dallas getting Payton and giving up picks.
They barely beat a terrible Tampa team and then got to play against Purdy who looked lost. Has he been that bad? No, but I think it would be hard to with that roster. But he’s being paid to lift a Lombardi. And who knows how far they are from dong that with the players they have up against the cap right now.
Also he won't have Drew Brees and the Superdome.
At this point its clickbait.
Dallas nation suffer from a collective hallucination that the Super Bowl is rightfully theirs every year, when they haven't been fucking good since Jerry Springer had a TV show.
I like Dak, his personal story is inspiring but he's not the same since the ankle break. It was obvious to me watching the SF game he's holding them back.
Don't tell me he's fat or he yells at his son's basketball coach or he had Aaron Rodgers. Give me something tangible. Anything.
PS, save your time, he isn't any better unless both HC's won/loss record and postseason record are not to be taken seriously.
Dallas isn't firing McCarthy prior to the 23 season. Hold me to it.
Payton is a good coach. Maybe even great, but he's literally behind McCarthy in nearly every statistical category.
That is a significant hurdle. Jerry, Steven and Will McClay are deeply entrenched in their decision making process.
