Inside the most dysfunctional Patriots season under Bill Belichick: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it’ Bill O’Brien inherits a mess ... “I’ve never seen anything like it,” one source said. “It was disheveled,” another source said. “They were always scrambling to get things done.” ... “It’s always been about winning and doing what’s best for the team. I really believe (Belichick) when he says that,” one source said. “I just think he really didn’t understand how hard it was going to be.” Or, in the words of another source: “I love coach (Belichick), but he f—ed us.” |
Joe Judge, they later suspected, was in a long process of being phased out. It was a stark change from training camp when Judge would command meetings and share the play-call sheet in team periods with Patricia and Belichick. Judge also coached across positions in practice, forcing other assistants to occasionally correct his talking points to players during drills.
“I think there were times the coaches were frustrated, especially the ones who had been on staff in years past and knew what we had done,” one source said.
“Mac didn’t like him,” one source said. “At all.”
“(Judge) would speak extra loudly in meetings, trying to project like he was the guy,” another source said. “And I think that kind of rubbed people the wrong way.”
“A lot of people were frustrated with (Judge),” a third added.
Don Shula holds the all time record with 328 regular season wins and 19 playoff wins, 347 total.
I've got to imagine Bill REALLY wants the record, and he is surrounding himself with even closer confidants. Bill is planning on 2 or 3 more years and he could get into such a win-now mentality that he damns cap constraints because he'll be gone with the record when those bills come due.
When people question why Jones hasn't improved enough in his first 4 years, I'll point to articles like this. Can't think of anything that would hinder a young QB's development more than to saddle him with a clown like Judge.
Spot on.
It's true, which just makes Belichick's decision to have Patricia/Judge run the offense even worse. Throw even an average offense out there and they probably win 10-11 games.
Agreed. That article is a serious indictment of Judge being way over his head in any capacity other than a special teams coach.
Belichick looks even worse - from recommending Judge to Mara, to re-hiring Judge, to giving Judge a crack at the offense, and apparently still keeping him on the payroll.
Mississippi State must feel like they dodged a major bullet when Mara swooped in and hired Judge.
Changing your mind about someone or something when presented with more evidence isn't a bad thing.
Judge has proven himself to be a blowhard and a clown.
You're need to use sexual language to describe football opinions suggests you have ISSUES bro.
Judge is a clown show. - ( New Window )
Not surprising he wouldn’t like Judge.

Yup. It almost got his ass kicked by Marc Colombo the OL coach. And just remember his ridiculous rant to the press about the "locker room" and how he hadn't lost the players? The guy is a complete fraud, like many unsuccessful coaches before him. He is a knucklehead and a blowhard.
I never liked him from day 1 and didn't fall for it. For 2 reasons...1. His Philly trash accent. 2. I had recently been fooled by another knucklehead, blowhard, fake tough-guy with my college team (Steve Addazio at BC).
I don't think he's an asshole. I think he talks a good game, and some people might not like him because he seems to be just that, talk.
When he was here the offense was one of the worst in the league. Then he goes to New England and not only is their offense terrible, ours is suddenly average. Hmmm.
Rats leave SINKING ships. And with good reason.

further cements the idea in my head that Judge impacted Jones negatively. We lost 2 years of development with that clown

"We've done everything possible to screw this kid up"
Not surprising he wouldn’t like Judge.
Agreed. You can't blame the offensive coaching on all the problems on offense. MJones needs to own his portion of the blame. Some of the decisions I saw him make this year were completely incompetent.
Average arm, limited athleticism, one dimensional, too temperamental.
O'Brien has his work cut out for him.
The ship sank and we got into the lifeboats. Sorry that you had to go down with the ship...
as someone noted, they easily blew 2-3 games late, too!
