Landon Collins... interesting #s down the stretch...

Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/26/2023 3:03 pm
I think because so many fans wanted him to return to the field, and because his snaps came late in the season, the perception is he played more than he really did.

But I find this somewhat fascinating.

Collins played in six regular-season games with one start. The first two of those games came as PS call ups in Week 7 and 8 (before the bye).

He didn't see the field again until December when he was signed to the 53-man roster. Most of his playing time came in the last four games of the regular season, playing in 43, 46, 55, and 52 percent of defensive snaps.

However, he hardly played in the playoffs. 19 percent of defensive snaps against the Vikings and 0 percent of defensive snaps against the Eagles.

It appears Jarrad Davis stole his playing time (McFadden was also made inactive for the two playoff games despite playing in all 17 regular-season games and having his best performance in the regular-season finale against the Eagles).

I put this out there because it suggests to me they may be moving on from Landon.
So

he played 46% of the defensive snaps when we first faced the Vikings in the regular season, but only 19% against the same team a few weeks later in the playoffs? Am I reading that correctly? If so, then the coaches decided someone was a better option in coverage against the pass happy Vikings.

I'm fine moving on from Collins or bringing him back on a vet minimum type deal with a few incentives. He made a few plays for us down the stretch, especially is pick six against the Colts.

That is correct about the Vikings.
Eric, This is very interesting because in hindsight, we hardly saw

Landon out there in the playoffs and now I know why.

Thank you for spelling this out.

I can't tell you how happy my heart was when he picked 6 the Colts and ran it into the endzone with the team trailing after him hugging him and the crowd giving him a standing ovation.

I hope you are wrong and they bring him back next season as a hybrid/Wink Monster. He still looks strong, mobile and fast (for a LB, not a S). Someone like Wink can use those tools on an as needed basis IMHO.
He
Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/26/2023 3:27 pm : link
also played way more in the season-finale against the Eagles than he did in the playoff game (though that may have been more related to the team sitting starters).

We're seeing the top running teams like the Eagles and 49ers using complex rushing attack schemes that confuse defenses. That's not the strength of Jaylon Smith and Jarrad Davis. As Sy'56 has pointed out, both of these guys are big, strong, and fast, but they don't diagnose very well and have suspect lateral agility (I suspect the latter is related to their inability to diagnose complex offenses).

Long story short, the Giants need to get smarter at inside linebacker too.
I love Collins
46and2Blue : 1/26/2023 3:33 pm : link
but I guessed he played less due to what scheme Wink wanted to deploy. The pick 6 this year was great to see. One of my favorite players on the farewell tour. They need a stud ILB, and I think everyone including LC knows that isn't him.
even during his best years

Collins had his limitations. There's a reason he was sitting on his couch in August and September.
Did Collins tweak

His ankle in Minny playoff game?
Hopefully we find a true MLB
larryflower37 : 1/26/2023 4:47 pm : link
Collins, Smith, McFadden and Davis are not starting MLBs in the NFL we can not continue with this group.
Doubtful Collins is back

I like Collins, but we can do better. His pick 6 vs. the Colts was awesome AF.
They maybe thought the Eagles would pass more
sb from NYT Forum : 1/26/2023 6:31 pm : link
...and that's why they didn't play Collins.

...Queue the Eagles rushing for 140 yards in the 1st half, lol.
There is plenty of room
mittenedman : 1/26/2023 6:38 pm : link
to question our defensive coaching/strategy in the Playoffs. I thought Wink laid a bit of an egg.

And they almost won that game…. Dun dun DOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNAAAA
Seems to me Collins playing time started going down when we
PatersonPlank : 1/26/2023 8:33 pm : link
started to play Jarrad Davis. Maybe Wink wanted a D with more of a legitimate MLB
Davis wasn't much of an upgrade...
ConsistentGiantFan : 1/26/2023 9:53 pm : link
...he appeared as a downgrade to me.
I am not enamored with Collins, but I thought it was a mistake
Matt M. : 1/26/2023 10:04 pm : link
not to play him at all against Philly and very little against Minny. Smith and Davis don't get to the ball quick enough and are not good in coverage. Collins lacked in coverage as a S, but as a LB he is above average. I would rather have seen him out there over Davis for sure.

It’s funny how we’ve always commented that LC has limitations primarily in coverage and that we can do better. Yet we still haven’t seen what better looks like. And I can’t say that his replacements were better at what he does well. LC at least makes plays especially in the box.
The Giants Need to Get Better at Linebacker
Bernie : 1/27/2023 9:48 am : link
Jaylon Smith, Landon Collins, and Jarrad Davis are not the answer. The 3-4 scheme is designed for the linebackers to make the tackles while the defensive lineman eat up blockers. This doesn’t work when those tackles are being made 5 yards downfield. This position must be upgraded this off-season.
It's hard to argue anything Daboll does
Mike in Long Beach : 1/27/2023 10:30 am : link
but nobody is perfect, and the 0 snaps against the Eagles seemed inexplicable to me. He's a veteran with (relative) speed for a linebacker. Would've been an ideal guy to spy on those play fakes. Even now in these later years for him, his ball skills at the point of attack still seems to be at it was in his prime. He's great at getting his hands in their and legally breaking up a pass. We saw it multiple times. And in limited duty he made one of the top 3 defensive plays of the season (along with the Thibs grand slam sack and the Julian Love INT vs. the Ravens).

Just didn't add up to me.

What constitutes smartness at linebacker? To give an example, read and react was supposed to be a strength for McFadden when reading scouting reports on him/watching clips and he was supposed to be good at zone coverage, but it didn't show up much during the season.
Davis played poorly
Stratman : 1/27/2023 11:23 am : link
I don't get Wink completely turning from McFadden and diminishing Collins playing time. Davis was a downgrade and a costly one.
I'm no expert
Greg from LI : 1/27/2023 11:26 am : link
But Davis didn't do much of anything that I could tell. Dunno why Wink was so enamored with him.
If he wants to
Dankbeerman : 1/27/2023 12:31 pm : link
sign a vet min deal and have the chance to work at LB all offseason and show up at camp to win a job Im all for it.

He did more then most midseason signings ever do. He wasnt even on a PS I belive.
