-Colossal (Anne Hathaway)

Big trouble in little China
RicFlair : 1/27/2023 10:25 am : link
Is also weird but it’s the greatest movie ever.
Massacre at Central High
pjcas18 : 1/27/2023 10:41 am : link
is about a kid who was bullied in HS and it went too far and he snapped and embarked on a series of revenge killings and then some of the other bullied kids at the school became empowered also began to engage in acts of revenge against the bullies or their rivals. Very symbolic and political and allegorical. Heathers kind of stole a lot from this movie IMO.

Pink Flamingos was disgusting and I do not recommend it unless you like gross movies with a lot of shock value, there were some mildly funny parts though the story was bizarre.

Sleepaway camp is a campy (pun intended) old horror movie with a creepy, shocking, ending.

the movie Mother!
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 1/27/2023 12:27 pm : link
Aronofsky film with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. My girlfriend at the time wanted to see it, so we actually saw it in the movie theatre. I can say confidently that it was the most uncomfortably weird movie I've ever seen at the theatres.

I honestly did not like the movie. It just felt so over the top artsy fartsy. But I do give it credit for being completely unique and unlike anything else I've seen. Very werid.

I'll be honest, I typically don't line anything that could be called "artsy fartsy" but when this one clicked for me and I realized what was going on it worked for me. I really liked that one.

Maybe? It’s been probably close to 20 years since I watched it and I was definitely intoxicated somehow when I did.

I saw it in the theater too. Fun experience, people walked out etc.

I liked it quite a bit, especially once I realized it’s a retelling of the Bible.

Of course he is best known for the classic Re-Animator (1985). A must film for any horror fan, especially cult horror. One of the best horror films ever made.

But his long career has many excellent entries, including but not limited to:

From Beyond
Edmond
Dagon
King of the Ants
Stuck

All weird and brilliant.
Brother from another planet

Frank
Eating Raoul (I believe Mary Woronov was an Andy Warhol "superstar" back in the day)
Pink Flamingos if you can stomach Divine eating dog shit
Mother! was great
UConn4523 : 1/27/2023 2:02 pm : link
Aronofsky is one of my must see directors. The Whale was strange but definitely not in the same category of weird as some of his other work. Fraser was great, he lifted and otherwise ok movie.

Somewhat off topic & I might have mentioned it before, but I watched 'Sixteen Candles' not too long ago. Good Lord...that movie doesn't hold up well in 2023.

As if 2023's films standards are anything to take seriously lol

But you are right. There are shows like How I Met your mother, that, at the time the show aired I was embarrassed to admit I watched but not even a decade later a show like that is labeled "problematic" by some weirdo online who is probably 15 years younger than I am. Weird how shows like Friends become way too edgy and upsetting for today's crop of winners.

Also loved Pi.

There’s a really great documentary on the producers of that film on Netflix. Those guys just were notorious for making garbage movies.

This movie and its plot were weird. However, it kept my interest with really high level performances by Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon.

It is described as a dark comedy... but the plot was very heavy. I recommend it.

We saw this the other night. Agree with your description. Weird and dark, but it kept my interest. Great acting, cinematography and music. Strange plot.
