CB question: roster development or new acquisition?

Vin_Cuccs : 1/27/2023 11:30 am
I was having a conversation with a friend a few days ago and we got to talking about the CB’s currently on the roster.

Obviously, Adoree Jackson is a known commodity and will be back next season. While Fabian Moreau played somewhat well this season, a stronger #2 CB has been a frequent topic of conversation as he is an unrestricted free agent. I think at this point, we know the type of player that Darnay Holmes is.

Several young CB’s on the roster were drafted or acquired over the last two seasons: Cor’Dale Flott, Aaron Robinson, Rodarius Williams, Nick McCloud, and Zyon Gilbert.

So just how much of a need is CB? Can/should any of these players be given a chance to develop into a starting caliber player?

with Adoree' Jackson is he has now missed significant playing time in FOUR straight seasons.

Your question is a VERY good one. And we simply don't know. Some of these guys played better than we would have expected. But at the same time, the upper echelon receivers gave them problems. Some of them have injury issues (Robinson).
Unbelievably

only one Giants cornerback had an interception in 2022. Rodarius Williams.
personally I would look to re-sign Moreau to a cheap deal

bring back the young guys, and draft a CB in the first 3 rounds.

I am on board with this.
imo roster building at premium positions has to be 'all of the above'
Eric on Li : 1/27/2023 11:59 am : link
i think they should hunt value signings on the free agent market. players like Dane Jackson (BUF draft pick turned starter this year) or Anthony Averett (started for wink in BAL).

they should also try to bring back players who were effective if the value lines up.

they should also continue drafting players they like and take at least 1 DB in the top 100 pretty much every year.

and they should also continue to utilize waivers in the summer to add players like mccloud and pinnock and moureau.

you can rinse and repeat this same 'all of the above' strategy at WR and EDGE.

From Illinois looks like a CB1 in waiting-count me in for advocating trading up to get him in the mid 1st round.
His efficiency #s were off the chart last season.
Wink needs that for his hare brained schemes LOL

+1. If these guys are getting injured all the time, we need depth. Moreau is a decent NFL player and we won some games with him when he started.

The most he’s ever earned was a bit over $2mm in 2020, so it’s really a doable resign and in everyone’s interest that he returns.
I think it really comes down to Robinson and Flott.
Vin_Cuccs : 1/27/2023 12:06 pm : link
Robinson was round 3, pick 71. Flott was round 3, pick 81. That is a significant investment into the CB position. If neither of these players works out, that is a waste of assets at a pivotal position of need.

I just hope these two players don't take the same path as round 4, pick 110, Darnay Holmes, who looks to be a bottom-of-the-roster player.

Actually, the more I think about this, the worse it gets...there has been a pretty bad stretch of drafting CB's: DeAndre Baker, Eli Apple, Jayron Hosley, Prince Amukamara, Corey Ballentine, Chris Williamson.

It seems like the Giants always have to sign their CB's: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Janoris Jenkins, James Bradberry, Adoree Jackson.
Prince was a decent NFL starter for quite a long time.

I believe it was a mistake letting him go - we had a roulette of players out there after he left.
Remember last year we targeted CB's in Rounds 1 & 2
Rico : 1/27/2023 12:10 pm : link
And we just missed on them by one pick each. While our secondary played better than expected, I'm sure Wink is still looking for a true shutdown corner.
I think you want to add talent at CB
BillT : 1/27/2023 12:58 pm : link
Maybe 2nd round if the value is there. It does depend on Jackson a bit but it’s still a talent position that requires top athletes. Kills me that Robinson was hurt so badly but without him we need more at CB

Agree. I think it's an organizational priority to draft one on day 1 or day 2, and there's room to add another if value matches up on day 3.

Adoree is a good player, nice corner to have, and you can extend him, probably should get that worked out, but it's not going to be inexpensive and you have to plan for the position in a post-Adoree world, which can happen sooner than anyone can like because of cap realities when you have a monster extension coming up for Andrew Thomas and extensions for other players. I would pay McKinney over Adoree as well, and that extension is coming. Ideally, I would want Jackson as my #2 corner.
Corner and WR and DL are the Giants biggest needs

More is better than less....depth is vital.

Keep all if possible....
It’s not either/or.
Pepe LePugh : 1/27/2023 1:17 pm : link
Need to draft CB, and keep developing the youngsters. I’m not counting on FA: too expensive. If not draft priority 1, CB is 1A. You need 3 solid CBs in today’s game. Hopefully Jackson is one of them for another 2-3 years. Flott looks promising. If Robinson could stay on the field, we can see what we have there. The rest look like depth.

I agree. However we also need to find 2 new starters at LB.

There are in-house candidates for that, at least.

LB I do believe can be a target on day 3. 4 picks in top 101, would like to see a WR, CB, DL, and pass rusher or another WR, probably in that order. Will be interesting to see what positions present value at pick 101. Obviously, draft value is the ultimate priority, so I'm speaking in terms of an ideal scenario. If Hendon Hooker was somehow available at pick #58, that's my pick. I don't expect that to happen.
Deep and talented CB this year
Rick in Dallas : 1/27/2023 1:54 pm : link
I would draft a CB . Match BPA with need the first 3 rounds.
Adoree is a free agent after next year. Not sure when Robinson will be available next season.
Vin: Flott, Robinson and a 2023 pick will be the core in 2024
HopePhil and Optimistic : 1/27/2023 4:04 pm : link
Listening to Shoene's presser it seems like he values guys already in the building and is going to give the youngins every opportunity to develop. If they bring back Moreau, I could see Flott and Robinson pushing him and Holmes for the starting spots next to Adoree.

I agree with the posters above who think we will use a first or second day pick on a CB, but even potential shutdown corners need time to develop so he'll be part of the depth his first year, before possibly being a cheaper replacement for Adoree in 2024.

The others like McCloud may have situational roles or special team skills but I think Flott, Robinson and a 2023 rookie will be the core from 2024 going forward.
Its almost unbelievable that the only

That's nuts.
The biggest loss with Jackson
Dankbeerman : 1/27/2023 8:48 pm : link
thay gets over looked is how much better he was at coming up to set the edge in the run game then anybody else we had. Moreu never made an impact in the run game.

While you never turn down a shutdown corner we need a bigger bodied guu that can press and reroute guys on the line and come up an be a factor in the run game and shrink the field a bit for our 2nd class ILBs
