But I can't think how dumb NFL teams are sometimes.
What good did hiring Lovie Smith do? If Houston really wanted Ryans, why not hire him last year and start the rebuild. If they stink...they're in the same position they're in now, draft wise, but have a year in his system and he has 17 games of experience. What value did Lovie Smith bring in keeping the seat warm?
I think unless you're close, there's no reason NOT to go hire the coach you want. If some team wants Kafka but thinks he's not ready yet, they should hire him regardless! What does having an interim-not-interim coach do for your franchise?

I blame that serpent-headed Easterby and the owner's tolerance of him for everything that's gone wrong with that organization for the last couple of years. We want to know now what only time will reveal, however.

X Infinity.
That guy is one of the great con men the NFL has seen in quite some time...

Because there wasn’t any qb prospects they were interested in and love would give them a good shot at a top one this draft

But here's the thing. There's a chance Ryans has just as bad of a season and they own the #2 pick...but they'd have a year to implement Ryan's system and his guys. But instead, they decide to have a gap year with...Lovie Smith?
Re: They decide to have a gap year with...Lovie Smith?
Houston would never try tanking for the #1 draft choice and getting a franchise QB, right? LOL!
But here's my point. The Texans know Lovie Smith isn't the solution. So they waste a year to tank. Great. But it's a completely wasted year. If they want Ryans or Gannon or some other young first-time HC, they should have done it last year, tanked, but also had the benefit of having a full year with the HC they want. He would have had a full year to build with his guys and his system.
I think of it this way. Last year, the Texans picked Derek Stingley Jr. Imagine if Ryans comes in and installs a defense that doesn't showcase Stingley's strengths and he struggle and they cut or trade him after next season. That's a wasted #3 pick.
But if they hired Gannon or Ryans last year, maybe the Texans pick Sauce or Thibs or someone else that fits the system! Now the rebuild has already started, rather than starting now.
The Denver fans are not happy. They wanted Sean Payton but they would have to trade multiple picks and pay him $20M + a year and they don't want to do that.
They are kind of screwed since they are stuck with Wilson for at least two more years.
As of a few minutes ago, Rapoport is all over Ryans to Houston.
I don't know what to think about the Denver opening. Could be anyone at this point.

I live in Denver and heard on the radio today that Raheem Morris and David Shaw are finalists.

So who the fuck is Denver hiring? I thought DeMeco the Broncos was a done deal from all intents & purposes.

David Shaw? Really? He crashed and burned at Stanford.
This has to be a Condoleeza Rice move. JFC.
