The Eagles have 4 million in cap space for 2023.
They have 2 first round picks and the return of 2022 first - round pick who missed most of this season. Will Hurts demand a new contract? Will they lose a lot of talent and take a step back ?
spotrac - (
New Window )
Graham & Cox
Hargrave - 11 sacks
TJ Edwards - very good LB
Gardner-Johnson
Miles Sanders (although Gainwell looks like a good replacement)
Bradberry
Kyzir White
Seamulo
Maybe 1 or 2 of those guys are back? Although I don’t really see any east way for them to clear cap space (besides Kelce retiring)
They do have 2 first rounders but only 6 picks total.
Their roster is going to be a lot worse next year
Defense
DT Fletcher Cox
DT Javon Hargrave
DE Brandon Graham
DE Robert Quinn
CB James Bradberry
S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
OLB Kyzir White
OLB TJ Edwards
DT Linval Joseph
DT Ndamukong Suh
S Marcus Epps
Offense
C Jason Kelce
G Isaac Seumalo
T Andre Dillard
RB Miles Sanders
RB Boston Scott
QB Gardner Minshew
No they can't just figure it out. Jalen Hurts currently has a $4.7 million dollar cap hit for next season. He will get a massive extension this offseason in the $45 million AAV range. The Eagles will have to make room for that increase along with creating cap space to sign the draft picks and fill in the rest of their roster with cheap FA signings.
Please, Kansas City - please.
true, but wouldn't it be great to poach Kelce from them for 2 yrs??
Greg, if you see their cap situation for next season you will feel much better. They are going to have a drastically different roster next season.
I realize they have two 1st round picks next season but let's not pretend that Roseman is a great drafter in round 1. He took Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson. Andre Dillard the year before that and Derek Barnett, Carson Wentz, Marcus Smith, and 26 year old Danny Watkins.
If the win in two weeks, it’s all worth it for them and brutal for us.
Buttttttt, if they lose!!!!!!
I hate the institution of salary caps and find them to be unrelenting dull and uninteresting to talk about, so I don't know the particulars. I just know that the Eagles historically pull a Houdini act when they are supposed to be capped out.
100%
If they ever need to trade off an abysmal contract or bad bet, Howie will always find someone to take it and give him first round picks and talent.
It's the only sure thing in the NFC East.

Who will bail them out? Darius Slay and Lane Johnson are their highest cap hits next season and both will be 33. Their cap hits are $26.1 million and $24.1 million. If the Eagles did cut both they would only save $4.5 million in cap space.
Here is a breakdown of their cap situation with the dead cap hits for each player.

If they really need one more year of low cost qb play they don't have to give Hurts an extension. Granted it might cost them more in the end that way but if the need really is to win now.........
Or the moon. Whichever is easier.
Sy suggested him as a Giants FA target.
Their win yesterday upset me more than the divisional win vs the Giants. The unfairness of the result just got to me. I can accept the Eagles are better than the Giants. But to win a Super Bowl slot against a team that literally couldn’t field a thrower? That violates my sense of what the NFL is about.

If it makes us feel any better, the refs also decided to make sure the team with no passer had absolutely zero shot. FUCK!

It's funny how the refs suddenly remember delay of game penalties for the Eagles but ignore the 5-7x they commit false start. It's so obvious.

Sure, but who's on the bench we don't know about? Who are they going to draft? I agree that they'll have to drop some higher priced guys this year. I also know that their front office is competent, which means they have a plan.
Seems to me that they are planning to have a down year or two while the replacements get some experience, but I don't know if that is all that comforting.
Kelce, Cox, and Graham have all been floating retirement last year or two and Lane Johnson may only have a year or two left and Darius Slay is also a year to year CB at this point. Cox is one I could see come back on one year but I don’t see how they will be able to resign Hargrave at all.
Their Reddick signing paid nice dividends this year and was a good transition guy into next year as they’re not sure if Barnett will dependable coming back next year. I could even see them cut him and go with a draftee. Josh Sweat filled in decently although I think he looked better than he is because of the ridiculous talent elsewhere on their line this year.
They will try to use Nakobe Dean at LB but he’s a huge question mark going forward.
Roseman positioned himself understanding they’d need a big draft infusion over two years but if played well means they should be competitive and potentially resurgent as top contender again within year or two. The future test will be given Hurts escalation in salary and cap hit, sustaining a RB room and whether they keep Devonta Smith and AJ Brown both on huge contracts in 2 years.

What makes this team special is their depth. The depth is going to take a huge hit especially if all four DT's are not back. That leaves Jordan Davis and Milton Williams at DT. Thats a solid duo but Davis is not a full time player.
Their OL should be ok with Cam Jurgens replacing Kelce is Kelce leaves but that opens up a hole at guard with the loss of Seumalo. Sure they will draft players but you can't expect every pick to turn into an immediate solid contributor. The Eagles only have 6 draft picks and two of those are 7th rounders.

That’s very true. They’ve been kicking the can down the road for seemingly a decade. But that road has to come to an end eventually.
They’ve gotten very fortunate- other front offices have gifted them. Colts taking Wentz contract off their hands (for a first round pick too). Saints basically give them a pro bowl FS (and a top 10 pick in a separate trade). Titans let a young all pro WR go (basically traded him for Treylon Burks).
They had minimal flexibility this year due to previous years off kicking the can- but moved a TON of money to 2023, 2024, and 2025. They’ll basically be paying guys like Graham, Cox, Kelce, Johnson, Hargrave, Slay for years- and those guys won’t be on the roster
You can delay the inevitable, but you can’t avoid it entirely. With a huge contract for Hurts looming, they simply cannot do what they’ve done for the past decade
That said, they do have some nice young players that will step into roles next year
Sanders -> Gainwell
Seamulo/Kelce -> Jurgens/Driscoll
Hargrave -> Davis
Edwards -> Dean
But I’d be amazed if the roster gets better.
I would like a league-wide moratorium on trading with the Eagles. I don't know how that dweeb robs teams every year, but he does it every damn time.

Yup. Eagles have had just as many misses as hits in draft but it’s been Rosemans ability to sort of quickly regroup drastically in conceptualizing the roster forward in terms of windows here or there and winning in trades that has been pretty amazing and he keeps doing it even over 4 different coaching cycles and nearly being fired amidst the Reid to Chip Kelly mess.
That said I’m somewhat doubtful they’re going to just be able to swap in guys who have been generational and foundational guys for them. Their depth will take a huge hit now and I’m not sure that OL will be “elite” every year. Kelce and Cox have been nothing short of transformational and game changing talents on their lines for last decade. That said they are set up to be top dog in NFCE until challenged. I don’t see Dallas sustaining their window much longer and expect them to fall off pace and may be forced to blow it up and retool around different QB as soon as next year.
They will try to use Nakobe Dean at LB but he’s a huge question mark going forward.
I admit to not paying a great deal of attention to the personnel matters of other teams, but I was under the impression that Dean was good. Wasn't his name bandied about as a possibility for the Giants during the draft?
Apologies in advance for my ignorance.
They’ll do OK, but IMHO, 22/23 season was lightening in a bottle for them, and they are not as good as this season has been to them.
SAME!
I was thinking the same thing. He does a good job compiling assets and navigating the draft and gives his team more amo for the following year it seems each April.

Well he was a smart instinctive dynamo of a player in college but he also played on a stacked defense which allowed him to roam as a tackler and hunt a bit as a blitzer.
He had a significant injury (shoulder and upper body) which dropped him in draft. There are some questions about size and ability to shed blockers and coverage skills in bigger TEs. Some feel he’s best utilized in a sort of Swiss Army knife linebacker role than to be expected to be a MLB or true three down linebacker.

Ah. Thanks so much for the info. Makes sense.
They drafted Kelce’s replacement. Will he be as good or close talent wise?
They will have to replace others in the lines. Will come down to how well they execute
Quinn
Cox
Hargrave
Bradberry
Seumalo
White
Edwards
the above wont count in the comp pick formula
Joeseph 35 years old
Suh 36 Years old
probably wont be getting comp pick money
So probably only Sanders, Gardner-Johnson and Epps will be part of that.
This is why a guy like Seumalo makes a lot of sense, you can sign him to a decent contract, steal him from a rival and not have it count towards comp picks.
