A few days removed and I’m still fuming over his non-challenge of the Smith catch. How could he have not seen Smith desperately trying to get Philly up to the LOS? The only guy in that stadium who knew for sure it was not a catch was letting the world know. I read his explanations yesterday and none of them made sense. If you’re afraid of burning a challenge that early then at least burn one of your 1st half timeouts so you can wait for some more replays. If the 49ers are able to reverse that call and take over near midfield there, you’re talking about a different ballgame. Is Kyle Shannahan to be trusted in a big game with the track record he’s accumulating as OC/HC?
What is more disturbing is leaving Reddick alone vs TEs to start the game. That is worth questioning.
The bigger question 49ers fans should ask is getting the guy a difference making QB. Maybe Lance is it, we will see. But it wasn’t JG and it isn’t Purdy. There’s only so much he can do with the talent void he’s been dealing with at the position.
Jon, why not use a 1st half timeout? I could see it in my living room that it looked iffy. And even if one couldn’t see that, Smith was giving it away with his reaction on the field.
The definitive view didn't come until after commercial.
And it was the first drive of the game to potentially lose a challenge.
Big picture, they weren't winning this game anyway (assuming Purdy still gets hurt). The real negligence as someone pointed out another thread is when the backup QB came in, where were the more imaginative run/pass/sweep plays?
It seemed to me Johnson was just dropping back in standard offense.
I dont think so, right?
Does it has to be something completely obvious, or does the other team have to actually challenge it and the refs say "no need, we got this we missed it."

Just call timeout to see.
A turnover on downs there is as good as a turnover. Ball near midfield.

So call timeout and what happens?
I am not sure of the procedure...if you challenge and lose you just lost that TO?
But are they supposed to stop it?
If they are supposed to stop it, why even have challenges?
To me that wasn't clear cut based on what you seen initially.
Exactly, after being so on top of things the previous week, they were non-existent this weekend.
Additionally, Fox was far too slow with replay angles. It was their ONLY GAME for the weekend. So, they had a gazillion cameras on the field. They should have had the most revealing replay immediately.
Instead, they were too interested in finding celebrities like Bradley Cooper and Mike Trout.
Yes. Shanny Jr. spit the bit. He should have just come out and admitted it.
was it anything good? spicy?
This year, the NFL tried to improve on that and not have wasted challenges on VERY obvious misses. When they see them and can catch it.
This was not that play IMO.
You do make a good point but also think they were on the road in a loud stadium with a rookie QB, maybe he thought the Timeouts were necessary to hold on to.
I am disappointed that the replay system they had during our game didnt step in and correct it because it was a pretty clear drop.
It's the fucking twilight zone down here...

Spot on.
The definitive view came after the score and commercial.
Plus, they aren't stopping the game to review it on their own....it wasn't clear and obvious at the time.

Haven't watched the full first half yet myself. I can only surmise Shanahan wasn't fully aware of what had transpired, or of Smith's reaction, etc.

Yes sir, all sorts of spicy seafood, pork, beef, dim sum to start.
It's the fucking twilight zone down here...
Now that's bizarre.
Do u have a link, I'd love to see that.

If it was clear, yes, they are supposed to stop it. They only have until there are 20 seconds remaining on the play clock, so obviously it's not as thorough a review as for a challenge. But they can intervene and assist the onfield refs when:
Penalty enforcement
Confirmation of the proper down
Spot of a foul
Game clock administration
Possession of a loose ball
Complete or incomplete pass
Loose ball touching a boundary line, goal line, or end line
Location of the football or a player in relation to a boundary line, line of scrimmage, line to gain, or goal line
Player down by contact (when not ruled down on the field)
Obviously we don't know what those replay refs saw in the time they had, but if they saw a conclusive replay, they should have buzzed down to the field and reversed the call.

in the local paper about how it is one of the greatest catches in franchise history. The article DOES NOT EVEN MENTION IT WAS CLEARLY INCOMPLETE.

Disgusting. Further confirmation that the majority of the population are a bunch of inbred mongrels. Whenever I got a closeup look at them in Jackson, NJ at Six Flags I always looked closely at how stupid most of them looked. No wonder they come o these conclusions. Go Chiefs and save us from these morons winning another SB.

What happens is you allow your staff time to look at more angles or discuss the pros/cons of throwing the red flag there. I just have a hard time with the way it played out. I can forgive not seeing it right off the bat but how could he have missed Davonte’s reaction? That’s a dead giveaway.

Well, at least they do mention it was maybe going to be challenged. But no mention of an incomplete pass is really horrible reporting. And a misleading headline in addition the article.
But on the stat page it was a reception LOL so I guess they have that on us.
No, I saw it too. I was screaming at the TV. All I’m saying is I can forgive annoying who missed that, but Smith’s reaction after should have been obvious to anyone, most of all Kyle Shannahan.
Yes, and as others have pointed out, TV viewers did not see the definitive angle showing the non-catch until after break (or after next snap). I was thinking about this during one or another of the Fox breaks, when they show a speed-up of its game production studio, you know, where six or seven guys lined up in a row, each with a big flat screen in front of them and multiple console switches to toggle, esp. the guy in the foreground with a huge, must be master console (looked like a nuke reactor control room). It's fast forward speed, yes, but man there tens if not hundreds of looks to identify, select, and get it to NY, let alone what is selected to be shown on the broadcast. That's not to say this is an excuse, but we may be underestimating the real time, human challenge.
Who cares he didn’t challenge? That was a huge play in the game. 4th & 3 and would have been essentially a turnover. Niners would get the ball around midfield.
Awful move by Shanahan. All he had to do was see DeVonta Smith sprinting back to the line, he knew he didn’t catch it.
Who cares? Lol
Where do some of you come up with these takes? You could argue this was the biggest moment in a game that got away from SF very early.
What is more disturbing is leaving Reddick alone vs TEs to start the game. That is worth questioning.
Yeah. Agree competitor on the Reddick thing
I think this is probably right, but momentum is a crucial element in sports, and this would have swung it to the 49ers very early in the game...
As for Shanahan, I still can't get over 28-3. Yes, he was the OC, but that collapse still clouds my perception of him & Quinn.

I think it was #29 Hufanga who was in perfect position to see the fumble and was waving no catch. Why didn't he tell bench to Challange? Confusing!!
