Breaking: Saints and Broncos are finalizing compensation in return for Super Bowl-winning HC Sean Payton, sources tell ESPN. This clears the way for Payton to sign with the Broncos to become Denver’s next head coach.
And so Payton is expected to head to Denver as its next HC.
i think that's a pretty decent fit for him though. i dont think russ forgot how to play football and skill set wise there are some similarities with brees.
it's possible payton goes the same way russ does and turns out to be a massive overpay for the lesser half of a qb/hc partnership, but with russ under contract and the picks already given up they almost have to roll the dice and go for it.

The #Saints and #Broncos just finalized the deal on compensation and sources say New Orleans gets a first-rounder and an early pick — likely a 2nd rounder — but also give a pick back. Complex deal but now done. Sean Payton will be the #Broncos coach.
will be interesting to see if he can make chicked salad out of that chicken shit team. Compensation will be interesting, considering Broncos already gave up a ton of high picks for Wilson.
heard from someone payton's price was 18m per year
I disagree, the dumpster fire was that HC who looked like a little kid dropped off at daycare for the first time. He had no business running a professional football program.

Even if it was a dumpster fire, these guys love going in and turning places around.
AZ is by far the worst of these jobs.
Stuck with Murray and that contract, plus he's injured for the majority of '23 season. Old team that needs a re-boot, but not a lot of options to work with...AND the 3 other HC in the division have all been to the Super Bowl.
Indy by all observations seems to be the Owner's pick (Saturday) vs. the front office begging him to go elsewhere. Not a stable environment to walk into.

Another first rounder gone? Jesus, Paton....
Two "Paytons" in Denver - Sean and George (his last name is pronounced
is spend all your draft capital on an aging QB spend big time dollara on him and when the Coach you hire blows double down and spend what little draft capital you managed to recoup to pair him with a Coach who walked away from his last job to maximize the $$ he could demand.
Just so you can fight for 3rd in your division for the next 8 years behind 2 stud QBs
even when his arm was shot. And you have to ask yourself why he’d go there if he thought Wilson was done.
.
He wouldn't if he thought Russ was done, too smart for that.
His receivers and O Line didn't help out either last year!
I don't particularly care for Payton, not that it matters much...

should probably gamble and take next years pick. That Chubb trade pick is in the late 20s this year and they don't have ammo to trade up for a QB this year given Eagles have their pick. Given their cap, they probably will be top 15 next year.
Payton has his work cut out for him to get this team to playoffs in their division. Chiefs and Chargers 4 games a year?
Can see that pick next year being in mid to late teens still and being bundle-able for a trade up given Saints probably won't be good next year.
the Chubb trade was for a 2023 1st. So it must be San Francisco's 1st rounder that the Dolphins got in trade. #30 overall
Which is No. 29 this year. Looks like it's this year's 1st, and next year's 2nd, and they get a 3rd in 2024 back from the Saints.
That would leave Denver with 2 thirds, and 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th rounders this year. Next year they will have their own 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th while adding the Saints 3rd.

Timing of today’s two hires was completely coincidental. Broncos were zeroed in on Sean Payton, and didn’t make any contact this week with DeMeco Ryans or his agent. Denver was focused on Payton, and Houston on Ryans.
What about the first we’re owed from the Shockey trade?

they will have a hard time getting one under the cap.
Or flip the switch and move big $$ players and rebuild, which they really didn’t do. If I’m right, draft day could get interesting,…and I’m guessing they won’t trade with Philly.

Which scenario makes more sense to you?
Ryans has been rumored to be Houston’s coach for two days now. And Denver needs an offensive mind to figure out their huge investment at QB. This isn’t difficult to come to a conclusion that Shefter is very likely correct here

Sean Payton wins either way. This is a final jackpot before he retires.
"All we need is a QB, ok let's trade a boatload of picks and some players for Russ Wilson. Whoops, now we need a coach, let's trade a bunch of picks for a coach. Now we have everything we need!" This is never the case.
If they don't win it all next year, they've got substantial assets tied up into the QB and coach, and not a lot of options for getting any cheap, good players. So, in a year or two they've got Russ and Sean and bunch of holes.

Schefter just said on "NFL Live" that is was no coincidence that Payton was wearing an orange tie Sunday on Fox's NFCC coverage. Apparently, both sides have been working to finalize this deal/opportunity for the last two weeks.
This hiring hinges on whether Payton can revive Russ' career. And man...Denver is bereft of draft picks until my daughter is probably walking down the aisle in 2040 or so.
If Payton came back and Denver refused to offer compensation to NO? I know he is under contract with NO but they have a head coach, could he have forced them to let him go?
If Payton came back and Denver refused to offer compensation to NO? I know he is under contract with NO but they have a head coach, could he have forced them to let him go?
That isn’t a scenario that’s possible. Payton “retired” leaving the deal he signed unfinished. Unless NO negotiated some other way to let him go, this is it.
but firing a HC after only 1 season is just absurd. That is alot of turnover in a very short period and players need to adjust to that.
is Sean Payton going to have a bigger impact on the club then 2 top 30 draft picks? I'm not certain that works when you have a veteran QB.
How did Daboll change the Giants in a few months? Payton has better players than the Giants do. I doubt Russell Wilson woke up one morning and became Mark Sanchez.
The Broncos will not win that division, lots of good teams, but they will be quite competitive.
A top of the line coach absolutely is worth two 1st round picks.
both turned their respective franchises around. You can’t waste your time on a HC that clearly is in over their head and that was Hackett. My guess is what we saw as fans wasnt as bad as how it looked internally as well.
It’s not a dumpster fire. It was a poorly coached team.
Yes. Will these Wilson "haters" retract their dumb comments of Wilson turns it around? Doubtful.
You are a voice of sanity in a sea of terrible hot takes.
And if he doesn’t are YOU going to retract? Of course you won’t. Wilson was noting short of absolute trash this past season. It wasn’t all because of the coaching.
It’s funny, you’ve constantly had the stance that franchise QBs can overcome poor coaching, poor talent, etc. They make everyone around them better. Your act is beyond tired. Just a horrific poster.
Whether or not you think Payton is the man for the job

If Wilson doesn't perform under one of the top offensive minds in Payton its probably safe to say he's cooked. But somehow I think he looks entirely different under an elite offensive guy like Payton. I dont think ball was missing a lot of zip this year nor did he look he couldn't move well enough in the pocket. He had Brees plying well way past his prime. I think he does the same for Russ.

Denver and the Saints have been discussing two potential packages for Sean Payton:
1. Denver’s 2023 first-round pick and next year’s second-round pick for Payton and the Saints’ 2024 third.

Pretty tough football town and they have high expectations.
You have to admire the challenge of taking on Mahomes and the Chiefs. If this works, Spanos may have a lot of regrets keeping Staley...
