It’s often polarizing, but I believe teams should draft QB’s every year. It’s important to keep that pipeline going and even if you miss on a Kyle Lauletta type, I think it’s still worth it.
Increasingly, we are seeing injuries at the QB position. We’ve seen it in the playoffs with SF, Miami & Baltimore. Mahomes got dinged up and missed a few series. Do we ever want to watch the likes of Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm again?
A couple of examples recently where this has worked:
-Eagles draft Jalen Hurts despite Wentz being signed long term.
-Niners draft Brock Purdy despite having Garoppolo & Lance.
-Pats draft Bailey Zappe despite drafting Mac Jones the prior year.
I can already hear the rebuttals. “It’s a wasted pick. Go draft a LB’er instead.” Fact is, most of the time mid to late round picks don’t pan out. QB is the most important position.
Assuming Jones gets a 3-4 year deal, he relies on his legs. He’s going to get dinged up. The Giants caught a break this year when Jones got banged up in the Bears game that it wasn’t serious. But, he missed 6 games in 2021, 2 games in 2020 and 2 games in 2019. He’s missed 10 games due to injury in his career.
Tyrod Taylor has durability concerns and Davis Webb is likely getting into coaching.
For all of the posters here that are avid college football watchers, which later round QB’s could be a good target for NYG? I’m thinking someone similar to the skill set for Jones.
Belichick drafted JimmyG and Brisset while he had Tom Brady.
I agree with your premise, Sean.

I'm not against taking a mid round year every two years, but to be fair, Brandt and Belichik weren't trying to build their teams and didn't have holes all over their rosters.
I would not mind Hendon Hooker[sp?] if there in the 3rd. Need a replacement for TT eventually and he'd be a nice hedge for Jones.
If he's there in the third round, then definitely consider taking him.
That's my not very informed opinion.
Nassib, Lauletta, Webb (though he did develop into possibly an adequate backup QB after being cut, though maybe wants to get into coaching) say otherwise. I agree with you, but the Giants haven't drafted a QB past the first round in decades who was decent.
I do think that it is getting easier for later round QBs to be adequate as the NFL has gotten a lot more favorable to the offense. A cost controlled backup QB would be very nice, and they may need to go in that direction in the next draft or two with the money they are paying out for Jones. Wouldn't mind if they are able to trade Taylor for anything and go lower cost (whether Webb or a pick)

That's what drove me nuts with Reese when he picked Ryan Nassib in the 4th, there was still a ton of talent on the board including Kenny Stills and Micah Hyde.

A lot of those players are going back to school
I don't know how accurate that list is. Just off the top off my head, Nix is staying in college (I believe) and Hartman is transferring to ND. I guess they still have time to declare for the draft.
On that list, I do like Jayden Daniels out of LSU. I wouldn't mind a flier on him. Athletic, so can make plays with his legs. Only threw 3 INTs last year after a 10/10 TD/Int ratio the year before. If I am looking for a backup QB, he looks like he can run a similar offense as Jones. I want a backup QB who can make plays with his legs and doesn't turn the ball over too much.

Need. There’s nothing wasteful about it. We need to pick a QB.

Hopefully they've revised their scouting policy. Apparently, "show up at the Senior Bowl and draft a tall white QB" isn't sound strategy.
That said, I think it's ludicrous to have 2nd/3rd stringers who can't execute your offense in the same way as your starter. I also think it's poor strategic thinking to plug-in with veteran dollars because you haven't developed any young guys.
Even if you take a younger throw-away as your 3rd stringer based on your college evaluation, and declare that the previous team(s) didn't develop them as you would have, we're talking duel-threat here; the floor is lower than it is with a mid-line thrower or a "mobile" pocket passer.
Jones is unlikely to get a Godfather offer from the Giants as well, even if he's making 35ish AAV it should have an out after a couple years. A developmental prospect not only gives you depth for Jones but provides a hedge down the road. It makes a lot of sense for the right guy after our first few picks.
Ding ding ding…. You are reading my mind. I think Hooker was gonna slip regardless, but with his ACL, I think we could have a real shot to grab him in round 4, and I would absolutely cheer that pick on! Hooker needs a couple years to be a real NFL QB, but the kid is a winner and played his ass off last year. He’s a perfect backup for Jones, and someone we could develop and “trade” for a 2 or 3rd in the future, worst case.
I’ll be closely watching him this draft season…
