WR Rashee Rice, SMU Ripping it up at Senior Bowl

mittenedman : 2/1/2023 10:59 am

The guys at Talkin Giants are down at the Senior Bowl, and Rice is one of the early standouts. Skinner is saying Rice fits Daboll's offense perfectly. 6' 202 lbs., 4.3's, good quickness and burst. SMU lined him up at wingback (right behind the Tackle) because he's a great blocker. +Blocker on the pin & pull, End arounds and screens.

I've never seen him play, but he's got plenty of highlights going up and highpointing the ball/showing strong hands in traffic, and looks like a playmaker.

Anyone a fan? Agree about his fit in Daboll's offense? Is he good value at #25?

Rice Highlights - ( New Window )
Yeah, he's awesome. Bailed Tanner Mordecai out of a few shitty

throws. I actually thought he was bigger. He looked bigger than 6 feet when I watched him.

I wouldn't look at him in the first round, but I think mid-second round is his sweet spot.
4.3 guy that can play physical?
widmerseyebrow : 2/1/2023 11:03 am : link
That's interesting. I'll keep an eye on him.
Kinda
Professor Falken : 2/1/2023 11:04 am : link
reminds me of Deebo. Based on those highlights, doesn't look like a 4.3 guy.
I like him a lot
bigblue12 : 2/1/2023 11:05 am : link
I agree that he appears bigger than 6 feet tall. I do not think there is any way he is a 4.3 guy, but he doesn't need to be.
My favorite WR in the draft
BigBlue7 : 2/1/2023 11:07 am : link
great hands, ball awareness and body control

Fantastic spatial awareness. Really knows how to find and settle into the soft spot of the zone.

Incredible ability to catch the ball in traffic.

Reminds me a bit of Hakeem Nicks.
Yeah, I'm not sure where the 4.3 came from
Anakim : 2/1/2023 11:07 am : link
Speed isn't his calling card. He's not slow, but he's not particularly quick either.

Reminds me of Nicks in that matter. Not "stopwatch" fast or quick, but still very elusive

Couldn't watch after the color guy said "right in the honey hole."

Lost my concentration.
The 4.3 is unconfirmed, hasn't been officially tested by the NFL yet.
mittenedman : 2/1/2023 11:15 am : link
An article mentioned he ran 4.36 coming out of high school. I agree he plays bigger than 6'. I watched his highlights before checking his measurements and was sure he was at least 6'2".
This site has him at 6'2"
widmerseyebrow : 2/1/2023 11:16 am : link
with a 33 1/4 (!) arm length. They also have him pegged as a 4.36 guy. Need to keep an eye on his official measurements.

Great comp, looks like a Nicks clone. Seems like he plays way bigger than 6'0 which is same with Nicks. Shifty, great hands. Sign me up.
I've seen him

late 1st, early 2nd in mock drafts. Obviously those aren't the bible but just as an FYI to everyone. pick #20-40
I know some here have expressed reservations

On here. I would like to hear more as to why

He looks like a good fit late first

Yeah, I didn't realize he was that fast. He doesn't look that fast to me on the field.

And he's playing in the American Athletic Conference, not the SEC. Watch highlights of the SMU-Houston game. SMU won 77-63 in regulation. Talk about no defense... ;)

But Rice looks smooth as silk, and that smoothness should be instrumental in helping him create separation.

He’s a first round guy. Absolute DAWG mentality at the WR position. He gives me Devonte Adams vibes, a guy that can see 10-15 targets a game and come away with at least 8 catches.

shocktheworld : 2/1/2023 11:27 am : link
Is a great talent… but he’s gonna go round 1

The guy I’m watching and hoping gets zero attention or positive press is Tennessee’s Cedric Tillman…. He has a lot of Mike Evan’s in him… injuries are the concern with him… but he’s a big, long strider who catches everything…. He isn’t a guy that will makes a lot of after the catch plays, but he’s a big strong outside receiver that can dominant secondary’s ala Evan’s style.

We should def be able to get him in round 2…which is great value for him…
Tillman - ( New Window )
Seen him a number of times, but as noted above itst hard to
PatersonPlank : 2/1/2023 11:30 am : link
tell because of the lack of D in that conference. He looks good and was the key guy on SMU. I always so him as a 2nd day guy (Rds 2/3).
I heard the podcast yesterday
JoeyBigBlue : 2/1/2023 11:42 am : link
They said he’s closer to 6’1” 190 lbs than the 6’2” 203 he’s listed at. They raved about his speed and ability to get to all levels of the field. They said he struggles getting off the line in press coverage. This is definitely a guy to keep an eye for this week.
Nice find

I was going to question the 4.3 after watching the highlights..but...I also realized I didn't understand the context of the offense he was in/how he was being used. This guy was essentially the man for his offense(similar to Wandale Robinson at Kentucky last year)...from the draft network:

Quote:

Rashee Rice battling Jones for biggest riser mantle
Jones has been phenomenal, but he’s not the only receiver prospect putting up eye-popping numbers. Halfway across the country, in Dallas, Texas, SMU’s Rashee Rice has been dominant.

Rice’s numbers are nearly identical to Jones’ — 491 yards and three touchdowns, but on four fewer catches. He’s averaging 17.5 yards per catch and is coming off an 11-catch, 193-yard showing against a Maryland defense with quality NFL draft talent.

Production can be a great indicator for NFL-caliber receivers. It’s the case with Jones, and Galko says it’s the case with Rice as well. But what’s most impressive with Rice — Galko says — is that he’s winning as a route runner, at the catch point, and as a vertical threat. He’s SMU’s guy. Everyone knows it. And yet, no one can stop him.

“He’s being targeted as a receiver in that SMU offense more than any FBS receiver in the country. When it’s a passing play, it’s going to him almost 50% of the time,” Galko said of Rice. “Defenses know it’s going there. His yards per route run is high, which means he’s generally going deep. And yet, he still has 15-yard catches. He still has 21 of 28 catches being first-down catches. Usually, these big-play receivers have lower catch totals, bigger yards, high yards per reception. But Rice is the No. 1 receiver, who’s also their best deep threat, who’s also their best third-down receiver. And that’s pretty rare.”

In the words of Galko, this is where film and analytics — often contentious factions when draft season rolls around — can merge and join forces to paint a complete picture of a prospect. On film, Rice dominates. And in different categories, the numbers mirror his impact on tape. Rice’s emergence for the Mustangs has made many, including the Shrine Bowl staff, reconsider his projected role at the NFL level.

“We entered the year thinking Rice was a very good complementary No. 2 receiver, but he has resoundingly told us that ‘hey, this guy can be a featured receiver in an NFL offense, with the way he’s playing,'” Galko concluded. “If he has these numbers at the end of the year, it would be historic. If he can keep up being this targeted and this successful on first downs, this effective vertically, he’s on track to eventually become, undeniably, one of the top receivers in the draft class.”

The fact that he was essentially the focal point of their passing attack makes it more interesting, because it means he is receiving a lot of attention from the opposing defenses, he will have more bodies surrounding him and less space to work with.

This guy is very interesting, and there was a little similarity to Hakeem in there as well..he looks like he has very soft mits..

Picking in the Mid 20's is something we're not used to. Usually, the top players are all gone by then and there is a wide range of excellent choices that can still start for teams. If he is who they want at 25, and he is there, I'd have no problems with this.

Just my opinion but I don't think Daboll will value an Evans type over others for his offense. I believe he wants a Diggs/Jefferson type with all these crossing routes they run. Great hands, ability to separate, run after the catch ability.
That guy is not going in the second round.

I'd sign for that. Easily.

Those first three picks are all first round caliber players to me.

Had a monster game like 200 yds. Was high pointing balls all over the place and MD has corner Jakorian Bennett that should be a day 1 or 2 pick this year so it's not like he was going up against Swiss cheese.
Everyone looks great on highlight videos
allstarjim : 2/3/2023 2:05 am : link
Highly unlikely he goes in the first. He isn't going before Addison, he's not going before, Johnston, probably not Jaxon Smith-Njigba or Flowers or Josh Downs. I would be shocked if he went before Jalin Hyatt. A few other guys could reasonably go before him as well.

And I really like him, but he's going to be a Day 2 guy most likely.

He also reminds me of Nicks, who we did draft late in the first round.

I luv his hands and his ability to get open.
