I believe it was at the studio's request because they thought a movie audience would expect more exposition than a stage audience. Mamet wrote the screenplay as well as the stage play, so he did write that scene.

Ah interesting, thx. I recall seeing it on stage well after seeing the movie and thought wait, where’s the Alec Baldwin scene?
Back in those days, I was a General Sales manager for the Westinghouse Home Alarm division in Fort Lauderdale and that Patel line really hit home! NO SALESPERSON wanted to get a lead with the name Patel as they said they could not be closed.
I showed that movie a few times at our Monday morning sales meetings. Brings back some very fun memories. :)
love the part where he actually says the real line.. link - ( New Window )
I don’t recall ever seeing that before - fucking hilarious! Especially when AB broke. Dang - they all look so young… makes me feel old!
And he hadn't shot anybody yet.
Baldwin was always very very good whenever he hosted SNL seemingly every year in the 90s. Unfortunately outside of show business he seems like a really hard person to like not a nice human being and definitely has anger issues.

The New York Post especially, but other right-wing outlets aslo, have a huge agenda and they hate Alec Baldwin. They go to town on any dirt they can dig up on him. Obviously the shooting is golddust for them, though I don't know how you extrapolate from that that he is an unpleasant person.
yeah, because it requires an agenda to make Alec Baldwin look bad

Get the fuck outta here with that “right wing agenda” bullshit. Baldwin’s a brilliant actor, who’s also been an asshole in public multiple times. Not to mention he once left his 11 year old daughter a voicemail calling her a thoughtless little pig
My mom knew Alec Baldwin, then known as Xander, fairly well when he was a kid. He and my uncle were childhood friends all the way through high school. She does not remember him fondly, and that's putting it mildly.

You sure about that? David Mamet is notorious for not allowing any improvisation from his scripts.

was improvised by Baldwin. Cast members said he was just shooting from the hip in that scene.

Lol, I think you missed the joke there.

I focused on Mamet's works for my second Master's. Love his stuff.

The opening scene with Baldwin isn’t in Mamet’s stage version, think it was added for the movie. I don’t know if Mamet had any input on that part
Indeed I did!

A great scene from a very good movie of the era!
The question is, do I have a God complex? Let me tell you something: I am God. And this sideshow is over.

The fucking leads are weak? You're weak!
