Garafolo: Update (sort of) on the Colts' HC search

Eric from BBI : Admin : 2/2/2023 11:03 am
Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo

The #Colts are nearly done with their second round of head coaching interviews and are considering a rare Round 3 as well, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

If they go that route, they’d pare down the list to a select few finalists before making their decision on their next HC.

#Colts GM Chris Ballard and owner Jim Irsay are conducting one of the more thorough searches we’ve seen. Lots of candidates and long in-person interviews (around 12 hours in some cases), so another round to make sure they’re comfortable with their pick would fit.
So it's down to the Cards and Colts fr HC jobs? Right Eric?
Optimus-NY : 2/2/2023 11:07 am : link
I really think Irsay is just gonna go and hire Saturday. hopefully Wink and Kafka resist the urge, but Wink has gone on record saying he wants a HC job. Talk about two weird owners in Jim Irsay and the Bidwells, lol.
No offense but that is not

really thorough, it is more indecisive and meandering. if you talk to a guy for 12 hours what the hell are you going to ask him next time that sets him apart from the rest?

The Colts are being overly "indepth" to basically cover up they have little idea as to what they are doing. Once they lost Manning everything started to crumble. Then they got LUCKY (yes, intended) but then he too got hurt and left.. So now you lose your one guy holding things together, you have a GM who has been more miss than hit and an owner who is a crackpot (think Davis like with less actual success) who decides to fire his respected coach and hire a guy who NEVER coached before (in the middle of the season).

This search will most likely end with Saturday keeping the job and all new assistants (some probably hired via a musical competition or pie eating contest)..
I really don’t know how you can turn down
Chris684 : 2/2/2023 11:14 am : link
an NFL head coaching gig if it would your first opportunity, and I wouldn’t expect Wink or Kafka to. If they’re offered Colts or Cards they’ll go.
How many interviews are they going to have??
AcesUp : 2/2/2023 11:16 am : link
There's a fine line between being thorough and dysfunctional in a hiring search. This one strikes me as dysfunctional.
Sometimes the interview process is a two way street
GiantBlue : 2/2/2023 11:39 am : link
Maybe some of the more experienced interviewees are doing due diligence on their own.

For example. What is to say that accepting the HC job in Indy wouldn't be an exercise in futility in building a strong relationship with the Owner/GM. If that owner (Irsay) is really set on Jeff Saturday; I would spend a great deal of time nailing down what the roles and relationships would be if I took the HC job. Is Jeff in the building or more importantly anywhere around the locker room or field?

Etc. Etc.
Wink a frontrunner per Pat Leonard

That would suck

If I were

looking for a coach, even if I didn't want Wink or Kafka I'd interview them just to pick their brains to get an idea how Daboll turned the Giants around.

I think so. What was interesting in the Vegas odds is that Wink seems to be higher in the mix for the Colts job.

We could still lose both.

Have you ever worked for anybody that put themselves ahead of everybody else on the planet and set you up for failure on a continuous basis?
Wink seems like the kind of guy Irsay would like
moespree : 2/2/2023 2:07 pm : link
I'd be weary of it.

Yep. Wink seems to have the type the personality that Irsay would love. The Colts are the one that worries me.

Is that first comment on the Leonard tweet from you? Or does someone else use the same name for twitter?
if Wink was even just partially serious
djm : 2/2/2023 4:23 pm : link
about NYG being a destination DC job and not a stepping stone type gig, that means he even partially takes location and circumstances into account, and that means he isn't going to work for Irsay.

We shall see.

This is easy for us to say. He's not a young man, he's always wanted to be a head coach, and he may not get another shot at it. Also, most open HC jobs are bad situations, or the previous coach wouldn't have been fired. So he may figure he can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I'll let you decide if you think there's another Gatorade Dunk who takes shots at people's poor syntax on the internet.

At least one is waiting on someone from the SB.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/2/2023 6:31 pm : link
Considering Wink's age-he's no spring chicken-& his stated public desire to be a HC, he isn't turning down the job if offered. Neither is Kafka. There are only 32 of these jobs in the world & all of these guys have a healthy enough ego to think that they can succeed in any position. Of the two, I'd rather lose Kafka. Losing Wink would suck, but I'd be happy for him while sad for the Giants.
Let’s just hope Irsay does something dumb
bwitz : 2/2/2023 6:38 pm : link
like he usually does.

Great point. Which assistants stand out from the Eagles' and Chiefs' coaching staffs respectively though? Bienemy? Who else? I can't really think anyone else on either staff.
