Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU** Could he fall? Duggan article

shocktheworld : 2/2/2023 11:04 am
Sorry, I know its a pay site (I'm frugal with pay sites) but I can't recommend Duggan's articles enough. I recommend paying the fee as the content is well worth it...

With that said, if Johnston falls to #25...do you take him?

for me
BleedBlue : 2/2/2023 11:10 am : link
its an easy pick at 25. he should test well. doubt he is there
My one fear with him
jvm52106 : 2/2/2023 11:13 am : link
is he is known to drop passes. In a quick throwing, slanting and crossing passing game, you cannot drop the pass (hello Slayton) or bobble and catch it (also Slayton) as it kills the momentum of the play or the drive.

We need a playmaker who catches everything thrown to him, who has some down field ability but also a ton of in and out of his cuts ability (like Diggs for Buffalo).

We want a well rounded passing attack, with varied skills and sizes.

Johnson would be awesome but the drops would need to stop.
I don't know enough of these prospects yet
robbieballs2003 : 2/2/2023 11:15 am : link
but someone mentioned he suffers from drops. Imo, and I have stated this before, Daboll seems like the type that wants his Diggs/Jefferson. What I mean by that is a guy that can catch the ball, run the full route tree, get separation, and run after the catch. People try to use stats with the Giants receivers. We saw our WR suck, drop passes, and get no separation. Now, Daboll and Kafka ran plays to get WRs open and the stats on separation for our players a year later looked much better. What didn't look better was the drops. You can bet your ass that they want sure handed players. The run after the catch ability is huge too as you see the amount of crossing routes we ran. He'll get guys in favorable positions and they need to take it to the next level once they get the ball.

zay flowers
Run to the podium

I prefer the big time route runners
bigblue12 : 2/2/2023 11:25 am : link
to the long receivers who body catch and has drops. I fear this is another Laquon Treadwell.
I agree with Zay Flowers.

He's my favorite WR in the draft

I also agree. Zay Flowers is the goods. On the field Antonio Brown clone.
I like Zay or Quentin. If either are there..they should take
Rich_Houston_1971 : 2/2/2023 11:38 am : link
them.
I "highly" doubt
Dave on the UWS : 2/2/2023 11:38 am : link
they draft someone like Flowers. He's 5-10 172, virtually the same size as Robinson. They need bigger receivers outside to help with blocking and to win the 1-1 battles. Flowers projects inside.
I'd happily pick Johnston in a vacuum
JonC : 2/2/2023 11:46 am : link
but need to see the remaining talent around him before a decision.
Zay Flowers
allstarjim : 2/2/2023 11:47 am : link
Would be my choice in the 2nd round. May need to trade up for him if we don't get a receiver in the first round.

For me, as of right now, and I still have a lot of study to do on this WR class, but while I REALLY REALLY love Zay, he'd be behind Jordan Addison and Quentin Johnston. And I'd do backflips if we got Zay.

Steve Smith Sr on Quentin Johnson

Valid concerns

He’s a big body who
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 2/2/2023 11:55 am : link
Used it well to shield defenses, but he’s also a body catcher. He was a non factor in the Championship game, covered like a blanket.

Let’s see him test !

ryanmkeane : 2/2/2023 11:56 am : link
i'm not sure Daboll is going to love his body type

Dave...first rule is never trust the collegiate height/weight stuff. Wait for the combine, we'll get the real story. Truth is he might be 5'9". To me, when I've watched him, he plays bigger than the listed height/weight.

So that's good to see. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are both 5'9", Hill is a little thicker, but Flowers at 172 would be closer to Waddle's frame.

He can run routes close to Waddle too, and that's what's exciting about him.

But the size limitations are very likely why he's more of a 2nd round prospect.

He’s be hard to pass up
Breeze_94 : 2/2/2023 12:14 pm : link
At 25 because of the physical abilities.

However, if you look at the top NFL receivers - one trait that they all have is they are hands catchers who can catch passes away from their frame. Of course, there are rare exceptions (Toomer comes to mind)

From what I’ve seen, Johnston is a body catcher. He’s 6’4 but plays much smaller than that as a result.
I think he's a good player
Jim in Forest Hills : 2/2/2023 12:15 pm : link
and wouldn't be upset but not my preferred WR in the first rd from this class.

We have wandale, don’t know if another small guy like flowers makes sense
But also not just drafting the big guy because he is big

Zay Flowers is not a slot. He can do it if you want to put him there, but he's a boundary receiver all day. Wan'Dale isn't.

His game is more like Waddle than Wan'Dale.
I still just don't see it with this guy
BigBlue7 : 2/2/2023 2:37 pm : link
Looked great in college - but I don't see his game translating well to the NFL unless he gets in the right system.

Totally agree
I've seen him a lot and would love to get him
PatersonPlank : 2/2/2023 2:58 pm : link
He has everything and reminds me of Metcalf.

I'm not sure where the drops thing comes from. I have read a few scouting reports on him. They are really positive, ranking him from top 15 to late first round, they do mention "concentration drops" as a weakness that needs to be cleaned up. This was explained in one write up as a drop because of focus, not because of technique (catching with the body, etc).

Anyway I would run to the podium. This guy could be a special guy like a Metcalf.

Seriously, they need the big, reliable target Golladay was supposed to be.
