If we tagged Barkley, does he have any trade value?

Kmed6000 : 2/2/2023 11:36 am
Lets say the Giants are able to work out a deal with Jones and they move onto SB. Seems as though a long-term contract is a long shot. The best move may be a non-exclusive FT. I can't see anyone signing Barkley and giving up 2 firsts, but can we get maybe a 2nd and 4th. Or even a 3rd and 4th.

Do you guys think Barkley would net us a draft pick or two in that situation?
first blush reaction
bigbluehoya : 2/2/2023 11:45 am : link
is that it's probably less than what you suggested.

The headline piece in the McCaffery deal was a second rounder, and he's under contract for 3 more seasons at a very good price (given that the signing bonus all stayed behind with Carolina).

So the buying team either a) intends to pay Barkley a contract he's happy with (i.e. expensive) in which case they wouldn't also be willing to pay a ton of trade compensation or b) wants to utilize his 2 years of play under the tag (which comes along with the risk of holdout or etc).

I'd say maybe a third rounder and a late pick?
Possibly
UConn4523 : 2/2/2023 11:48 am : link
but he’d be a rental in this scenario, so that would mean big discount. And the only way we’d do this is if we happen to suck, so that would have to happen as well (and it could). I think a 3rd is probably a good expectation, possibly more if Barkley is playing like he did in 2022.
No matter what it is,
Kmed6000 : 2/2/2023 11:49 am : link
if there is some value, then we should tag him as opposed to letting him walk.

Also, I think SB is on McCaffrey's level when it comes to trade value. Don't forget how injury prone McCaffrey was in the years prior to this one.
Uconn,
Kmed6000 : 2/2/2023 11:49 am : link
maybe I didn't explain my thought well enough. I don't mean trading him during the season. I am saying tag him in the offseason and trade him in the offseason.
Why would we want to trade him ?
Ron from Ninerland : 2/2/2023 12:02 pm : link
He's the second best running back in the league. We all saw what he did for the Giants and we all saw what the first best running back did for the Niners. He's got a tremendous work ethic and if he stays healthy he's likely to improve as a player, particularly as a receiver.

If he's got unrealistic salary demands, its one thing but the best option is to sign him and play him. The second best option is to tag him and play him.
I can't see any team giving up more than a 4th round pick for him.

There are always good RB's in the draft.

Reasons for trading him:

1. I don't think a team like the Giants are in a position to pay big money for a RB.

2. I don't believe SB will accept less money that McCaffrey got and he shouldn't.

3. SB will not be happy with a tag and will surely sit out and be less interested in the season. Understandable as RB's have such a short shelf life.

Mccaffrey was great, and i know its a bit of a broad stroke answer....but they got just as far as SF always does.
He'd absolutely have value.
Metnut : 2/2/2023 12:26 pm : link
(If possible under CBA) better to tag him before trading him so that we can tag Jones if need be.

I could see teams like Buffalo, KC, LAR, DET, NO, DEN and others being interested. A McCaffrey type package likely isn't in the works, but a day 2 pick for the right to tag Barkley in 2023 and 2024 (or work out an extension) seems likely.

I am afraid to even ask...

Yet another team is? Who and why them?

Based on virtually metric if you allow for circumstances to also be part of the equation. And then the eye test.

Crazy pills...I have to be taking them.
He's certainly in the conversation for 2nd best rb

But there are 5 or 6 other rbs in that conversation.

Chubb and Jacobs had more yards, TDs and yards per carry than Saquon. Henry had more yards and TDs and the same yards per carry. Miles Sanders had more TDs and yards per carry, and only 43 less yards.

That is not even mentioning McCaffrey, who had more total yards and TDs than Saquon, and more total TDs.

Saquon is arguably not even a top 5 RB. Maybe 5th best, IMO.
Meant to say McCaffrey had more yards per carry

.
There are 31 other GMs to try and take advantage of if Saquon

has trade value so go for it.

Maybe some of them are friends of our former GM Gettleman and will get his direct feedback too.

We can only hope.
The premise that the Giants can't afford Barkley is speculation.
Ron from Ninerland : 2/2/2023 7:00 pm : link
It is pure speculation and rumor that Barkley is going to ask for some ridiculous money that the Giants can't afford, but somehow other teams can. In fact the Giants can use the tag as leverage and other teams know it. Nobody is giving up two #1's for a running back in today's NFL.
Thread is a non starter for me
Red Right Hand : 2/2/2023 8:57 pm : link
They're talking to Barkley, not Jones, so let's start by assuming they get a deal with Jones and then move on to Barkley?

Barkley is going to ask for McCaffrey money and he should. I do not begrudge him for that. RB's have a small window to cash in and he absolutely should cash in. Someone will pay him McCaffrey money.

No, nobody is giving 2 firsts, but you the Giants can still trade him for less. If the Giants give Barkley the non-exclusive tag, any team signing him has to give up 2 firsts...HOWEVER, the Giants can still trade Barkley for whatever they want. They can call any team and negotiate any trade and then they can negotiate a new contract.
CMC

Got 12 million a year from 49ers. Carolina had to pay him , so that's why his number looks like 16 million. I heard the Giants offered 12 to SB, so that seems fair

I'm not following your logic at all. Who cares what the 9ers are paying him. When CMC was a FA, he received 16 million per year and a large portion gtd. That is what SB should expect. Carolina then traded him to the 9ers who are only on the hook for his salary which is 12M. He still got 4/64 with 38M gtd.
