The drama

I noticed how friendly he's been to the media lately
bceagle05 : 2/3/2023 2:32 pm : link
and thought it was really strange. He wasn't his usual arrogant self when talking to those beneath him (in his mind). Obviously he was just on his best behavior while trying to secure the max extension.

Crossed the rubicon for me a few years back. Its more reality TV drama than professional sports league.

If the Nets aren't going to pay him this summer (which would seem to be the smart move given his history), he's better off getting moved to a team (along with his bird rights) that will. IF he gets to unrestricted free agency this summer and his incumbent team doesn't have interest in a big money deal, he's limited to teams with cap space or sign-and-trades. *good luck*

What's the list of teams that are opening the checkbook for a significant commitment to this loon?

I don’t see how he could. The PR alone would be disastrous given all the shit Kyrie has said and the demographic of a big chunk of the fan base.
A lot of stars demanding trades out of Brooklyn.

I wonder if they have a culture problem over there?

it's obviously not a long list. Maybe one or both of the LA teams? But once the deadline passes, he's likely looking at MLE money this summer at best. If he can maneuver himself to one of those teams at the deadline, they can pay him more.

Yeah but to their credit, the NBA handles many situations far better than the NFL does.

Let's see what the NFL does about Joe Mixon, for example.

and thank him for at least doing it when his value is at a relative high.

dallas has always seemed like a good fit and it sounds like they are interested. bring back dinwiddie, dfs, and some picks to add other players.

yeah with luka it can be the cleveland formula, hope he carries them with all time performances and kyrie hits enough big shots when it matters.

that's not a great strategy to win a championship but i dont think dallas has any other path.

dinwiddie and a couple picks gives the nets a guard they know/liked plus ammo to go shopping ahead of the deadline. or if they prefer cash in other assets.

shams says lakers, phoenix, and dallas are interested so i assume bidding starts with lakers 2 unprotected firsts + filler.

i would bet there are people in the nets org happy this happened the way it did, and were planning for this possibility. i doubt it was their plan a but i think everyone will breathe easier when he's gone.

i'd also be a little surprised if they don't just tell him to stay home until the deadline if it's not done quick. but i think there's probably motivation to get it done quick because i think they want to add picks to shop for others ahead of the deadline (GTJ? OG? Collins? Poetl?).

if they did that i think they'd be able to send nets their '25 and '27 firsts?

lakers can only send '27/'29 i think?

phoenix has all their picks so they can make the best offer but they are probably the least desperate. are they motivated enough?

I know you're kidding. But I don't want Kyrie Irving anywhere the near the Knicks. Not the upgrade they need. Maybe the Lakers would take him, though. Kyrie, LeBron and AD is a formidable lineup, and LeBron might be able to keep him in line. Maybe.
the other odd thing about phoenix is how do they salary match?
Eric on Li : 2/3/2023 3:56 pm : link
i think they'd pretty much have to include 1 of bridges/ayton/paul to salary match.

i assume bridges is off the table. ayton probably should be unless there's still bad blood there. paul for kyrie would be bizarre.

so that deal probably needs a 3rd team to take a bunch of filler salary from phoenix.

I dont know but it could be beneficial to the Knicks if they are in talks with Toronto, gives them another unprotected pick without using their own

The question then becomes how is KD going to handle this? It’s no secret that he and Kyrie are tight and Durant also has zero interest in being in a place where he is the lone star trying to carry a team on his back.

But why does it even matter if the Mavs pick is protected or not? They aren’t finishing in the top 10, that pick is going to convey and it’s going to be mid to late 20’s
Is it even worth it for the Nets to trade him? A headcase
Strahan91 : 2/3/2023 4:13 pm : link
who doesn't play often, can self-destruct at any moment, and isn't under contract after this season (and likely wants a max deal). How much is someone going to trade for that? The Lakers were unwilling to give up two unprotected firsts this summer before the antisemetism and with a full year left on his deal. Now? Maybe they get a lightly protected first or something like that

It doesn't really. If anything the Knicks should get something in return.
who are the knicks trying to get from toronto?
Eric on Li : 2/3/2023 4:21 pm : link
fvv would probably the best replacement possible for the nets as part of a 3 team with the picks kyrie brings back from 1 of the other interested teams.

re kd, id imagine just like earlier this year when kyrie got himself suspended he's just sick of dealing with the insanity and probably going to be relieved when he's gone. i think he prob had some kind of understanding with nets that if he wants out they'll trade him at draft.

simmons is interesting too. it was already a possibility the nets try to move on from him ahead of the deadline too. id imagine that's less likely now though.

what's crazy is if kd had just chosen to sign with butler instead of kryie he'd probably have at least 1 more ring right now.

It matters to the Mavs, so maybe Knicks get another small assett..

and if you are making a trade at the deadline, you have no idea where that pick is going to be, Doncic has a bad ankle, what if he hurts it and they drop to the play in or out of the playoffs?

toronto could clean up pretty good with picks sending him to nyk and fvv to nets for whatever picks they get back for kyrie.

would also give themselves pretty good odds to add another top 5 pick with barnes.
The Nets
Bruner4329 : 2/3/2023 5:00 pm : link
deserve what they get. This guy no matter where he has been has caused grief. The nets sold out to win a championship and in the end they will have nothing to show for it. The only saving point is if they trade him then maybe at some point you can root again for a team like this. Unfortunately right now they are a hard team to root for with all these prima donnas
I can't imagine wanting hium

and/or freak in the sack will get the analogy of Kyrie as a Knick. Some really great times likely, but also after a bit, you wake up in the morning and open your eyes slowly to be sure everything in intact. lol Followed by that “ohhh, what will this day bring?”

In actuality, I say no, no no no to Kyrie at MSG. I’m glad it’s not really a thing.
This hasn’t destroyed the nets at all
djm : 2/4/2023 11:51 am : link
So a player wants to be paid stop the presses. So we demands a trade…. Ok? Is Kyrie going to sit out? probably not.

What did the Nets give up for Kyrie? Nothing.

He said kooky dude no doubt. But just know the Nets tried to resign him.

I’d trade for him and sign him long term. Knicks would be a better team immediately.
People blame the Nets
Sean : 2/4/2023 11:56 am : link

hollinger proposed 9 possible kyrie landing spots
Eric on Li : 2/4/2023 11:58 am : link
but ultimately has some version of a 3 team with the nets getting fvv as his most likely outcome (which would be great for nets). basically:

kyrie --> lal, dal, pho or even lac
picks/expirings --> toronto
fvv/spare parts --> nets

the 2 lal firsts and nets 2028 first are the most obvious picks in play for toronto in this scenario with the question being if dallas, phoenix or some other team like lac wants kyrie bad enough to put better picks on the table.
