i've often thought For No One is the perfect song.
Another good one I'll throw out there: Time Waits for No One by the Rolling Stones. The whole It's Only Rock 'n Roll album is underrated. No hits, but it really holds together.
Drain You - Nirvana
Everything is Easy - 3rd Eye Blind
Half Light II - No Celebration - Arcade Fire
Spirit of '76 - The Alarm (the Alarm is underappreciated in general IMO)
So Lonely - The Police
Nirvana - Love Buzz
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues
Guns n Roses - Estranged
Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place
Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose
Really the entire Zep Physical Graffiti album other than Kashmir. Ten Years Gone, In My Time of Dying, The Rover, Custard Pie, Trampled Under Foot
the song was recorded in one take, the stones thought the tape machine wasn't rolling.
From Wikipedia
Quote:
Richards described writing the guitar riff:
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" came out flying – I just found the tuning and the riff and started to swing it and Charlie picked up on it just like that, and we're thinking, hey, this is some groove. So it was smiles all around. For a guitar player it's no big deal to play, the chopping, staccato bursts of chords, very direct and spare.
In 2002, Richards commented on the recording:
The jam at the end wasn't inspired by Carlos Santana. We didn't even know they were still taping. We thought we'd finished. We were just rambling and they kept the tape rolling. I figured we'd just fade it off. It was only when we heard the playback that we realised, Oh, they kept it going. Basically we realised we had two bits of music. There's the song and there's the jam.
Taylor recalled in a 1979 interview:
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" ... is one of my favourites ... [The jam at the end] just happened by accident; that was never planned. Towards the end of the song I just felt like carrying on playing. Everybody was putting their instruments down, but the tape was still rolling and it sounded good, so everybody quickly picked up their instruments again and carried on playing. It just happened, and it was a one-take thing. A lot of people seem to really like that part.
Stone Temple Pilots - Still Remains, Adhesive, Atlanta. (And the best David Bowie cover on mtv unplugged was not Nirvana’s Man who sold the world, but it was STP doing Andy Warhol)
Arethas cover of Stone’s satisfaction blows theirs out of the water.
While not unknown, Mike Jacks version of you are not alone is fantastic.
Here comes a regular - the Replacements
Good Feeling - the Violent Femmes
You Gave your Love to Me Softly - Weezer
Ultraviolet - U2
Ana Ng - They Might be Giants
On with the Show - Motley Crue
Dig for Fire - Pixies
Summer Babe - Pavement
at least in my perception these are all underappreciated
This also reminded me of a guy who was talking about how his son helped him transfer his records to CD because he listened to all this obscure stuff no one ever heard of. Turns out the record he was talking about was Purple Rain.
Was it on the most recent season? I have yet to watch it...
One of the last (maybe the last?) episodes had Marty and Wendy in the car heading out of the Ozarks and that song was playing. No words, just that song and it was perfect.

Pearl Jam - Animal

Galaxy is a good song by them too. They were an underrated band if you listen to their albums a lot of good stuff. Toes across the floor is another one of many..
I always get a kick out of the French hornist showing up late, but they started the session without him. But, yes - a favorite of mine that was under appreciated.

A Springsteen one that I think flies under the radar: 'I'm on Fire'.

I think the gold standard is the Counting Crows "Baby You're a Big Star" at the end of Rounders, which I don't think is on any of their albums.

I’m convinced that would have been a hit had Randy not left around the time Hotel California was released.
Felder called it an Eagles classic in his autobiography.
That song was written about Bernie Taupin who ran off with one of their girlfriends in the early 70s when Elton John broke into superstardom
As far as Joel goes, I will nominate You Can Make Me Free from his debut album and then I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight from Glass Houses

Anywho, I'll put a couple of Who songs out there:
Let's See Action
Gettin' in Tune
I Can See For Miles
Also, an album by Spirit that never got it's due:
Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus..
Although I am not sure how well known Spirit is at this point in time. So they might not qualify!
Lots of dead/phish and other popular bands from the eras had great songs that were b-sides.....heard space hog/311 on NBC recently too, lol
