i've often thought For No One is the perfect song.
Another good one I'll throw out there: Time Waits for No One by the Rolling Stones. The whole It's Only Rock 'n Roll album is underrated. No hits, but it really holds together.

Great song. He was very uncomfortable singing the high notes on stage. Timothy B Schmidt had a similar skillset and replaced him.

That song was written about Bernie Taupin who ran off with one of their girlfriends in the early 70s when Elton John broke into superstardom
