NFT: Records in any major sport that aren't likely to be broken.

Ira : 2/5/2023 7:37 am
I labelled this NFT even though it includes football - just being careful. One such record is Rickey Henderson's career stolen bases - 1,406. The next highest was Lou Brock's 938 followed by Sliding Billy Hamilton at 914. Hamilton played for the Kansas City Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Beaneaters between 1888 and 1901. Please post your additions .

Yes, good one.
An easy one is

career point in NHL. Gretzky has 2857. Next closest is Jagr at 1921. Just for additional comparison sake Ovechkin has 1464.

I do not think anyone catches (no pun intended) Jerry Rice for catches and receiving yards. All time rushing leader Emmitt smith has over 18K yards. Given how running backs are used and their short lifespan I dont think that gets broken either.

Nolan Ryan's strikeout record will probably never be broken the way pitchers are coddled now. Whoever is the innings pitched leader also and probably wins too. Pitchers do no last anymore and the role as a starter seems to get diminished each year.

I do not think anyone else will ever win 7 Super Bowls (Tom Brady) but its not impossible.

MLB pitching records are one.

Cy Young 500+ victories and 7000+ innings pitched. With most pitchers today not allowed to pitch to batters the third go around. Those 2 records should hold up in perpetuity.

Baseball- until the all or nothing hitting mentality goes away DiMaggios hitting streak isn't going anywhere. Ripken's consecutive games played as well as innings pitched are in no danger. Total HRs has a slim chance of being broken but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Football- any record that requires health/longevity career rushing yards, career receiving yards, etc as well as career Playoff/SB games. For the most part current players just don't stay healthy long enough to challenge those records.

Half of Cy young's wins makes you a first ballot hall of famer. They'd have to shorten the game to 5 innings for anyone to reach 500.
Dave Schultz

"The Hammer" 472 Penalty Minutes in one season.

And Dave "Tiger" Williams 3,971 Penalty Minutes in a career.

the game of hockey has changed so much - neither one is in jeopardy of ever being challenged.

and obviously the aforementioned Gretzky points total but his assist total is just as unlikely.

Are you being hockey specific? I think it’s extremely likely that an NBA team will win 4 in a row in my lifetime.

In just the last 20 years it could easily have been done by the lakers heat or warriors. And of course the bulls before that.
How about the answer to a different question….
LittleBlue : 2/5/2023 10:04 am : link
Records you once thought would never be broken but are in big danger:

Ovechkin is probably going to top Gretzky’s career goals record.
Johnny Vander Meer
Enzo : 2/5/2023 10:09 am : link
pitched two consecutive no-hitters. To break it you'd obviously have to throw three consecutive no-hitters. When's the last time a pitcher even threw 3 complete games in a row?

Maybe some super future pitcher could get over 500 wins, but no one is ever getting the chance to lose 315 games.

Also 826 decisions will never be exceeded.

In terms of baseball records
allstarjim : 2/5/2023 11:20 am : link
To me, the most untouchable record isn't held by Bonds, not even DiMaggio. Nolan Ryan's 5,714 career strikeouts. 839 more than 2nd place.

The active leader is Verlander, and he's 2,516 behind Ryan.

A pitcher with 2,516 career strikeouts would be 38th on the all-time list. It's about as many strikeouts as Bartolo Colon (2,535).
Records, shmecords, Babe Ruth and Sandy Koufax are still my
Marty in Albany : 2/5/2023 11:23 am : link

how about John Wooden for college hoops -
Del Shofner : 2/5/2023 11:28 am : link
"Among Wooden’s most notable accomplishments at UCLA are two record-winning streaks: 88 consecutive games (over the course of four seasons) and 38 consecutive NCAA tournament games."

The game is completely different from the game he played. The rules and the diamond are the same, mostly, but the way the game is played is entirely different.

Agreed. It's the most untouchable record in major team sports.

Assume a super precocious kid was allowed to start pitching at 15 in the MLB. He would have to pitch 25 years, with no health issues, and average 20 wins per season for his career to get to 500 wins.

In other words, you basically have to believe in the Easter Bunny to believe that's possible.

Brodeur has more than just wins. His other records are even more out of reach..

Games played for a goalie = 1266 (next closest active player = 970

Shutouts = 125 (next closest active player = 72)

Saves = 28,928 (Fleury has a chance to catch him with 25,208)

looks like a very good chance that will happen.
I guess my point is never say never...still don't think Joe D.
will have his hitting streak record broken now, with the game as played today. No one has even reached close to 50 games,
I think Rose got up to 44 one year? Now if someone gets up to 30 games, it seems to be news, but not really, it is something

Good one, hadn't thought of that. I looked up the all time leaders in HRs hit by pitchers. I thought Babe Ruth would be higher but he only hit 14 HRS as a pitcher. Here are the leaders. I guess Ohtani could challenge these guys - but does he hit on days when he pitches?

Wes Ferrell 37
Bob Lemon - Hall of Fame 35
Warren Spahn- Hall of Fame 35
Red Ruffing - Hall of Fame 34]
Earl Wilson 33
Don Drysdale - Hall of Fame 29
John Clarkson - Hall of Fame 24
Bob Gibson - Hall of Fame 24

BTW, these are just their HRs are pitchers. Back in the day most of these guys occasionally pinch-hit as well, and most of them hit at least a couple of HRs pinch-hitting in their career. Those were the days ...

Ohtani has apparently only hit 3 HRs as a pitcher, the rest as a DH or field player. But I guess he could break this record depending on how things go.
