NFT: Records in any major sport that aren't likely to be broken.

Ira : 2/5/2023 7:37 am
I labelled this NFT even though it includes football - just being careful. One such record is Rickey Henderson's career stolen bases - 1,406. The next highest was Lou Brock's 938 followed by Sliding Billy Hamilton at 914. Hamilton played for the Kansas City Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Beaneaters between 1888 and 1901. Please post your additions .

and I was in the stands. My second favorite moment attending Coliseum games, after the Jeter flip.

Rickey's speech to the crowd is somewhat famous for his "Now, I am the greatest" tag line, but he also made a point of remembering and thanking Billy Martin, who had died two years prior.

"I love you Billy; I wish you was here." 5/1/91 - ( New Window )

I was there too.

Midweek day game, ducking out of the office. No tracking devices then.
Chamberlain's 100pts scored in a single game

Seems pretty safe.

Especially when you consider he did it without 3-pointers.

I think that one is safe LOL
Two Mariano Rivera records seem pretty safe

652 career saves....Trevor Hoffman ended up at 601, and #3 is Lee Smith with 478. Active leaders are Craig Kimbrel and Kenley Jansen with 396 and 391 - both are 34 years old already and would have to average 43 saves per season through age 40 to get there. Ain't happening. 952 games finished as well - Mo is almost 100 past Hoffman at #2 and almost 400 games ahead of Jansen, the active leader.
I'm starting to think...

hitting .400 is almost impossible where the game is today and the way it is trending with pitching.

It may get to a point where .350 is the new .400.

Joe D's 56 game hitting streak

always stands out on these lists as just the right combination of preposterous but actually possible.

44 - Pete Rose (1978)
38 - Jimmmy Rollins (2006)
35 - Luis Castillo (2002)
35 - Chase Utley (2006)

Rose is the only one who came somewhat close but multiple 35 guys are there. If Castillo can get to 35, maybe the right combination of better talent and luck can get to 56?

It involves so much going your way in terms of 50/50 batted balls, but I don't think it's one of those we can say is impossible in the modern era like a Cy Young/Walter Johnson pitching record.

the 3 point shot is the reason why this one may eventually fall. When Kobe went for 81 he *only* hit 7 threes. Klay Thompson had 37 points in a quarter but only played 33 mins in that game.

Breaking this record would most likely also involve someone simultaneously breaking the record for 3s in a game - and staying in the game long enough to do it.

I've thought for a long time that Klay Thompson has an actual chance at Wilt because of the 3pt shooting.

Even in Wilt's day, if he scored 70+ then it would typically be a blowout in that team's favor. Wilt scoring 100 was a bit of a sideshow act as both Philly and the Knicks did really stupid shit in that 4th quarter as the game became more about his scoring record than anything since it was a fairly safe Philly 20pt lead late in that one.

The the GOAT NBA scoring performance in my opinion was BY FAR was when Kobe scored 62 in 3 quarters to outscore the Mavs personally 62-61. A Mavs team that would go on to be in the NBA Finals and almost win it all.

An NBA player outscoring the opposing team through 3 quarters is unthinkable, regardless of the quality of the opponent. Kobe's 81 was also a more impressive scoring performance than Wilt's 100 relative to the situation imo.

I've never liked Kobe but that man was mesmerizing when he got hot. I would say he has the 2 most impressive displays of individual volume scoring in league history with context included.

I think Klay or whoever has a better chance at Wilt's 100 than actually outscore an entire team by themselves for 3 quarters.

I could see Wilt's 100 game mark falling. Hell, Spider had 71 last month.

pitched two consecutive no-hitters. To break it you'd obviously have to throw three consecutive no-hitters. When's the last time a pitcher even threw 3 complete games in a row?

This is the one. No way it ever gets broken. Need to go another 9 innings of no hit ball
