NFT: Yellowstone Fans - If you haven't started 1923, you should

Danny Kanell : 2/6/2023 3:31 pm
I'm 4 episodes in and I think this might be the best show of the entire Dutton series.

I haven't seen last night's episode yet and there are 3 more after last night but I feel like this is headed towards being the best season of any show of the entire series, including all seasons of Yellowstone. And I loved 1883 too.

Helen Mirren is incredible.
I’m going to start soon
UConn4523 : 2/6/2023 3:35 pm : link
have a few things I’m trying to finish up before jumping in. 1883 was such a fantastic season of TV, so if it’s as good or better I’ll be happy. Even a step down would be good.
Taylor Sheridan

cant seem to miss
Just started season 5 last night

It’s just a well made series overall. 1883 could have been a feature film from a quality perspective. Still have to check out 1923 as well.
Couldn't agree more

I loved 1883, but I think 1923 even tops it. I'm also really into Mayor of Kingstown right now.

Yellowstone itself is probably Sheridan's worst show.
1923

Blows them all away. It’s awesome
Does anybody else get a Sons of Anarchy vibe from Yellowstone?
Fat Wally : 2/6/2023 4:31 pm : link
I just binged Yellowstone over the last few weeks, and I'm currently all caught up. The thing that stuck out to me, was how similar it felt to Sons of Anarchy. Right down to the conflict between Casey and his wife compared to Jax and his wife.

Fun fact, Taylor Sheridan played the Sheriff in Sons of Anarchy, so maybe he's leaning on a few elements of the show.

Yeah there’s some sons there
UConn4523 : 2/6/2023 4:33 pm : link
minus the warzone that is Charming, CA. Always laughed at that affluent town that somehow allowed mass murders taking place in broad daylight on their main shopping strip.
All caught up except last night
JOrthman : 2/6/2023 4:43 pm : link
Agreed, great show so far, but I'm a little bias being from Montana.
I’m digging 1923
RicFlair : 2/6/2023 5:06 pm : link
But I feel like African safari story could have been like 2 episodes.
Absolutely, 1923 is a real good series......
Simms11 : 2/6/2023 5:13 pm : link
it won’t be done after this season however. There’s supposed to be another season of 1923 to finish the story. I assume it’ll be called 1923 still.

There’s a ton of good shows on Paramount+ as well. I also thought Evil and Tulsa King were good.

Is Evil like “monster of the week” type show or is it long form story?

Tulsa King was great
Absolutely love Yellowstone and yes
redwhiteandbigblue : 2/6/2023 6:35 pm : link
I agree that there is a SOA vibe but to be honest, I liked SOA even more than Yellowstone. In the last 15 years or so SOA and 24 were my favorite shows. Mayans MC is good but pales in comparison to SOA.
Haven't started 1923 yet

...but got through 1883 wanting more.
Yellowstone has been spectacular...although the last few episodes have felt a little forced in some small way. I think it's because they're rapidly approaching a conclusion.

Taylor Sheridan has been rolling 7s for a while. Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Hell or High Water, Wind River, Sicario. Tremendous body of work.
Don't want to miller the thread, and probably a controversial opinion
JoeMoney19 : 2/6/2023 7:05 pm : link
but I can't stand the way Isabel May voices Elsa. It ruined 1883 for me and it still makes me cringe when she does the narrations in 1923.

That being said, I loved Yellowstone and I think 1923 is great so far.
Those Who Wish Me Dead is the only thing I didn’t like
UConn4523 : 2/6/2023 7:08 pm : link
Jolie was a really bad casting, and the final showdown at the end was way too ridiculous. Could have been a lot better.
Yeah I disagree on Isabel May
UConn4523 : 2/6/2023 7:09 pm : link
she’s terrific

I think she's a good actress. I just think she lays it on too thick with her Tennessee accent. I found it distracting while she was acting in 1883, and actually cringe worthy when it's just a narration clip.

I also hate cilantro, so maybe it's just one of those things, haha.
Can't wait, I am waiting until the full season is over so I can
PatersonPlank : 2/6/2023 8:08 pm : link
stream it thought. Big Yellowstone fan and I loved 1883.

The narration in 1883 was over the top.
Heisenberg : 2/7/2023 8:34 am : link
The fact that they also brought it to 1923 was so annoying to me. I find it to be frustrating and self indulgent, even if occasionally I like a turn of the phrase in it.

I enjoy May's narration but I could see it turning people off. Its such a romanticized way of speaking and she really drawls. Reminds me of some of the books I read when I was a YA.
Didn't see the most recent 1923 epi
Stu11 : 2/7/2023 10:51 am : link
but saw the first 4. I agree its awesome. Helen Miren is like the Beth character on Yellowstone. They're definitely over the top, but the lines are great and both accesses give tour de force performances. The Beth-Monica exchange about losing a baby a few episodes back was one of the best of the series.
The African hunting scenes in 1923 are spectacular. All of the Yellowstone series and spinoffs would be awesome to see on IMAX.
I thought the Isabel May

idk the finale a couple years ago with the 3 simultaneous coordinated assassination attempts may as well have been charming.

i hadn't thought about but i did similarly lose interest in soa as it progressed. sounds like maybe the prequels are a little better. i picture sheridan double checking deaths he writes in the prequels with a picture of kevin costner in his pocket like marty mcfly's siblings.
That’s really the only main plotline that did it
UConn4523 : 2/7/2023 4:14 pm : link
it was over the top for sure but SoA did that in every season pretty much. That show became a comic book. That’s how I felt towards the back half of the Shield, just ruined the show for me in how ridiculous the plots got.
