I think Sean took this job for the cash grab, but am legit curious to see how the Payton-Russ marriage looks this coming fall.
I don't think it's just a cash grab. Many rate the Denver job as one of the best out there. Everyone loves the owner because he's committed to spending and doing what it takes to win. And it's still a very good roster. People who call Denver a shit show don't know what they're talking about.

There's talent on the roster, but they gave up a lot of draft capital and they're tied to Russ for a long time because of the cap hit. Unless RW makes some kind of turnaround that hasn't been seen at his age at the QB position, they're in for a very rough few years. I like Wilson and I hope he turns it around, but there aren't many fan bases that envy Denver's position right now.
If I was Payton, I would have held out another year & see if Staley or McDermott got the boot.
He's getting a ton of coin in Denver. And I personally think Russ is cooked. But we'll see.
Payton with Herbert would have been very cool. But the problem with the Chargers is the owner is cheap. It's not even clear LAC would have paid Payton. He could have made the move this season. A lot of people were calling for him to fire Staley. I actually like Staley, long term, but the table was set up for Payton to LAC. They decided to hire Moore instead.

Payton hire only works if he can recreate Seattle Wilson offense and add his own wrinkles to maybe free up some guys better and/or improve running game.
If he tries to run what he did with Brees, it will fail. Wilson ain't Brees, never was. There's a reason why Jimmy Graham's career ended a lot sooner than it did, and that was because he went to Seattle.
Payton seems like he has an ego, and likely will want to do things his way. If he does, they will fail. If he understands what's really gone wrong here and is willing to adapt to Wilson, it has a shot.
IMO you could no longer threaten a deep playoff run with Wilson (and that's probably been true for at least 2-3 years now).
Likely he could do ok and win some regular season games, but come January, I doubt they even win a wildcard game with him.
Jimmy Graham tore his patella tendon his first year in Seattle and was never the same after that.
Haha, injury excuse.
Perhaps so, but was never going to be the same with Wilson throwing him the ball. At least half the league at the time if not 2/3 would've done a better job getting a subpar Graham the ball.
RE: A+ for the movie reference in the OP, well done

Seriously, you're calling that an "injury excuse"?

Alex Smith's shoulder was never the same after Rocky Bernard crushed it in Seattle and he returned too soon from surgery and had to redo it.
His arm was never the same and likely kept him from being a franchise QB years later. Was a great arm up until 2007, not a game manager one that he became known for later.
Wilson, like Payton this offseason, joined Denver as a high-profile trade acquisition expected to lead the Broncos to success. Alongside Heaps, Wilson also brought his own trainer, strength and conditioning coach and massage therapist to Denver. It's an arrangement that's familiar in NFL circles.
Lamar Jackson's personal coach Adam Dedeaux joined him at Ravens training camp last offseason. Trainer Alex Guerrero famously worked closely with Tom Brady in New England before head coach Bill Belichick banned him from Patriots facilities. Heaps said last offseason that he was wary of overstepping his bounds in Denver.
“They’ve been amazing about it and it’s been really fun to work with him and for Russell to get this opportunity in Denver," Heaps told Denver's 9 News last summer. "My job is not to step on the staff’s toes."
The boundaries are now clear under Payton's regime. Heaps is not welcome at Broncos headquarters. Though that doesn't mean that he won't be working closely with the Denver quarterback.

Payton is credited with helping Drew Brees develop into a Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback in New Orleans. His primary task in Denver will be to navigate a path for Wilson to return to the form that led him to success in Seattle. He addressed the subject Monday.
“Obviously it wasn’t the type of season he wanted to have," Payton told reporters of Wilson, per the Denver Post. "I do feel like the last couple weeks we saw a little bit more of what we were expecting or accustomed to. I think the No. 1 job for us as coaches when we’re evaluating our players is, ‘What does he do really well?’ And then let’s try to put him in those positions. At least, that’s the starting point is to highlight their strengths and then minimize what might be the weaknesses.
“Here’s what I know. I know he’s a worker. An extremely hard worker. That’s important. And I think you take that, you understand the skillset. ... And then you go from there."

I agree, which means Russell Wilson just flat out SUCKED last year.
and he was already way down on his production. Under 900 yards on 125 targets and his lowest YPC to date that year. Despite the injury he played well in Seattle but obviously not on par with his pre injury, 25 year old peak years in NO.
Morale of the story is this is a really bad example to try and say Wilson sucks. And based on the production of the TEs this year in Seattle (especially looking at Fants previous two years) you can argue that TE production is more of a Pete Carroll scheme issue than QB issue.
Did you have a stroke when you typed this?

I still can't believe that the Chargers didn't even attempt to land Payton. Can you imagine the huge leap Herbert would take under Payton?

Is Sophie part of his QB coaching staff too?

Was it over before it was over...? Was Yogi wrong?
Fair.
But he was never going to be unstoppable like he was in 2011 playoffs. Brees was next level.
