WR Parris Campbell- a possible FA for the Giants?

YANKEE28 : 2/17/2023 4:07 pm
Could the Giants have interest in the former Ohio State burner? It's possible.

In 2019, after a solid college career, Campbell was a 2nd round pick of the Colts.

His first year had some very positive signs, but he was hampered by 3 different injuries- a sports hernia, later a broken hand, and finally in Week 14 his season ended when he broke his foot.

In 2020, he got a new receiver coach- current Giants WR coach Mike Groh. He had an immediate connection with Groh and impressed throughout camp and was named a Game 1 starter.

Campbell was impressive in that first game under Groh-catching 6 passes for 71 yards. But in Week 2, the injury bug struck again- this time tearing the PCL and MCL in his left knee and a trip to season ending IR.

Last year, Campbell's first NFL season fully healthy, he played well, finishing the season with 63 catches for 623 yards (including 3 catches vs the Giants).

To date his 4 year NFL career includes 97 catches and 5 TDs.

Some may remember Campbell's outstanding Junior and Senior years with the Buckeyes and his Combine performance (including a 4.31 forty and 40 inch vertical), and he will be a reasonably priced FA that spent two years (2020 and 2021) with the Giants current WR Coach Mike Groh.
Injuries.

For that reason, I'm out.
Yes on a super cheap deal

But his health is a big issue. The one thing I remember about him when he entered the draft is that they said he was too muscular and could be susceptible to injury as a result.

They said the same about Metcalf, but I think he’s the exception when it comes to guys that are super ripped not having flexibility and subsequent ligament and soft tissue injuries on a regular basis.
Some of those injuries are not a big deal

The PCL and MCL tear is a huge one. I'd pass.

Metcalf was injured a lot in college but has been good as a pro. Yeah, it is hard to predict but with the Giants injury history over the last decade or so, they shouldn't be targeting guys with injury histories. Again, can't predict it but all you can do is go off what we do know and we need all the help we can get.
Possible

On a cheap, incentive-laden deal, I wouldn't mind it. Same goes for Mecole Hardman. Both guys have injury histories. Both were second round picks. Both could sign a prove-it type contract and hope to cash in next off-season if they stay healthy and put up some solid production.

Would still draft a couple of guys in the draft and let them all fight it out in camp. One mid or low tier FA, two draft picks, Hodgins, Robinson, Colin Johnson, any other UDFA they might sign after the draft.
It's likely
YANKEE28 : 2/17/2023 4:20 pm : link
in Campbell's best interest to sign a one year "prove it" deal that includes incentives.

For that reason, and you are probably talking about a $3 million contract, I remain interested.
a rich mans John Ross

worth a shot? sure, but a flyer
Sign a FA NFL WR because if his college stats?
GMen72 : 2/17/2023 4:30 pm : link
Hmmmm? Pittman is a definite yes. Campbell is a hard pass.
A 1 yr deal makes sense. He's faster than Slayton who he could replace

I'd

rather keep Slayton. Campbell is a better player but as others have noted, has a pretty lengthy injury history. But if Slayton leaves, then yes, I'd be interested.
good point on the connection with the WR coach

It would have to be a cheap prove-it deal.
No
JoeyBigBlue : 2/17/2023 5:35 pm : link
We shouldn’t be paying premiums on oft injured players.
Love all the background insights....Thanks, Y28!

I was just going to say this. I loved Campbell in the draft and I think he is a great fit for Kafka's offense. If he is willing to sign a 1 year deal then he would be a great addition IMO.
Absolutely take shots on high risk high reward players

On vet minimum one year deals. The more the better, you only need one or two to work our and you'll get comp picks if they earn a better contract in free agency the following year.

I'd rather sign 5 John Ross, Paris Campbell, Isaiah Hodgkins, John Washington etc types, even if 4 don't pan out, if even 1 rises to the top. Better odds than signing a single $5-10 mil mediocre player who barely moves the needle. Once the new league starts there will be plenty of options after roster cuts to consider. Other teams 3s, 4s and 5s if given a chance can be our 2 or 3 at minimal cost until our draftees and youngsters step up.
As a FA, sure why not. If he has some skills sogn him for cheap.

Exactly. Other injuries no big deal. PCL and MCL is a big deal. I would also pass

Too many injuries
A game in October 2021 kind of summed up his career.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/18/2023 9:33 am : link
Campbell ran past Houston’s safeties and caught a 51-yard bomb from Wentz. A few minutes later, he was declared out with a foot injury. He missed ten games and did not catch another pass that season.

It’s fine to say, “Sure - sign him to a cheap prove-it deal with minimal guarantees.” Even then, the risk is that he climbs the depth chart, takes a lot of valuable reps, then gets hurt again and you’re scouring the waiver wire and practice squads like 2022. Of course, any player can get hurt, and Campbell finally got through a season unscathed. So maybe he’s a good “buy low” option. He still looks fast, and he has better hands than John Ross or Darius Slayton.
Coach McGaughey would also weigh in on Campbell.

Might have value as a kick returner and gunner, in addition to whatever he brings on offense.

Made a number of big time plays and fits very well in the offense. We should prioritize with our without resigning Barkley IMO.
