1 season can be a fluke
bluetothegrave : 3/7/2023 3:47 pm : link
It wasn't a great season but a very good one for him 1 season. you transition tag him and let some other team set the market for him of keep him for 32.4 million, if another does go after him you get to decide if you want to pay the $ of youll gladly take their next 2 1st rounders. That is the only move.

For wanting to get paid.

At some point, you have to be realistic. I think he’s set the bar way too high, and now it’s going to jeopardize the supporting cast around him (Barkley, cap space, etc)

This can come back to haunt him. He gets tagged, no long term agreement. Gets exposed without Saquon and no upgrades at WR. And now he’s in Sam Darnold/Baker Mayfield territory next off-season.

I think he does and he just knows the Mara's and their feelings about him will force a buckle. I'd say given the news and the way it has played out i'd be very surprised if he isn't signed to the long term deal at $40M+ AAV.

All of these "hey they are meeting again" situations show it is the Giants who are desperate to get something done. Otherwise they should just be like, hey, we are tagging you, you come back to us when you have a more reasonable number.

The Giants are the one with the trump card but it is playing out as Jones exerting the leverage here time and time again. Because he knows how ownership feels about him

with everyone who says that Jones is taking a big risk by not signing, especially since the two sides are obviously close. He could get hurt or not play well, or both, this season. Is that risk really worth a little extra money? I respect his right to get every penny, but at some point pursuing those last few dollars seems foolish. Not greedy, just unwise.

Agree. At this point, as much as I like him, I don’t want to tag him. If we tag him, we have zero cap room to put anything around him. If we thought the offensive cupboard was bare this year, wait until we trot the same group out without Barkley or even Richie James and Slayton. Will be surprised if we crack no. 30 rated offense.

It's certainly happened before. You can have a preference and it not be an indictment of your work ethic or values. Eli Manning called his shot on the city he wanted to play before before he'd earned anything in the NFL.

It's business. I worked for a showbiz agent once. Guy was absolutely fierce negotiating for his biggest client. Those negotiations would get heated. That didn't mean the client didn't want the deal.

We would tell clients never to watch him negotiate for them. (Good advice for any agent's clients.) One did, for a short time, one day. He walked out basically saying he never wanted to do that again. Lots of brinksmanship in those talks.

Yes, I am good with it. Felt like I had the pulse of this one thing. I am often wrong. It seemed like the Giants value him a lot more than many here were saying.

Clearly that was true based on the numbers.

What do you think there could be in the details that doesn't make this a HUGE win for Daniel Jones? Bottom line, he is guaranteed 82 million for 2 years. Work that out in your head a minute. Sounds like he could have been tagged for 32.4m but received a lot more. I might be simple, explain it to me.

Paying Jones that guaranteed money for the first two years isn't just a win for Jones. It's for both sides. Yes, it puts the pressure on the Giants to manage the budget to field an improved roster. But also, once they navigate past the two years of games and evaluation, they have flexibility against it not working out. It is easier to work with the contract later on when the cap is wider-open and the non-guaranteed money is movable. Jones gets money guaranteed in the first two years. The Giants get the peace of mind that if it doesn't go as they planned, they are not imprisoned to dead money. Basically by putting the money in the front end, they're leaving room in year 3 to re-negotiate or extend without paying a vicious penalty.
