The getgo. None of it ever made any sense at all to me. No way he, or anyone is worth that much money.
I'm dumbfounded that Watson, given his baggage, got this deal. But Cleveland is going to Cleveland I suppose.
But I disagree that no player is worth that money.
If Pat Mahomes was an unrestricted FA, he'd get far more; and most likely so would most of the truly elite QBs in the NFL.
Honestly what Watson (and Kirk Cousins before him) showed is how wildly underpaid the top QBs in the league really are, and how powerful the franchise tag (or threat of the franchise tag) really is.
Restructure again and that will lower. You can keep kicking the van down the road because that season will never be realized. It’s a fictional season in a sense. Not sure why more teams don’t do this

It doesn't work that way. You can't push money past the term of the contract.
You guys are forgetting that Watson averaged 4600 yards of offense and 33 td's a year over the 3 years prior to being benched. Those are Mahomesian numbers. The contract he signed at age 26 basically paid him a level $46 million a year over 5 years. If he approaches those numbers in Cleveland, they will gladly pay it.

You can kick it down the road but the bill will eventually come due.
The Browns will always be the Browns. Anyone defending this contract even a tiny bit is an idiot. Not surprised reading this thread that there's one. And people thought the Jones contract would handcuff the Giants. I present this terrible contract.

The pay matches the potential production but there will always be the threat of another lawsuit out there, and/or more info coming forward. Normally that wouldn’t be the biggest deal in the world but the fully guaranteed part makes the risk enormous.
That said 35 TDs isn’t worth a $60m+ cap hit IMO. You better be a rung above Mahomes and pushing 50 scores for that kind of pay.

Because when you kick the can down the road it normally means new guaranteed money. When the contract is already fully guaranteed you’ve already accounted for all of the financial burden. I don’t know all the rules around moving money in his deal but it’s completely unique.

A lot of this is accurate. But Watson should not have been the harbinger for a guaranteed deal this large. It's just a bad look on the heals of his legal problems.
I'm all for the free-market setting price, but Haslem left his morals and conscience at one of his truck stops in a move of desperation. I admire his determination to win, just not with this player at that time.

No new money. They re-defined salary as bonus to spread it out over several years but the dollars are the same.
if they are going to find a violation of his contract at some point. There has to be some restrictions of activities/etc. and the easiest way out of this contract will be for him to void it by violating the terms.
I would put the odds rather high that this contract never is paid in full because of such a violation.
I meant other contracts that aren’t already fully guaranteed. That’s why this isn’t a universal practice, in almost every other situation you have to add more money.
that the same guy who told Billy Beane that its good thing to get Johnny Damon off your roster and he's not worth what the Redsox paid him, gave Deshaun Watson 200mm+ guaranteed
@spotrac
Deshaun Watson's cap conversion with the #Browns opens up $35,868,000 of space for 2023, adjusting his future cap hits to:
2023: $19.125M
2024: $63.96M
2025: $63.96M
2026: $63.96M
2027: $8.967M (void)

Will we see an entire team of undrafted free agents on their rookie deals and a well-paid quarterback?

Good luck building a roster with that.
