Nice story, but always felt he was overrated and the underdog angle appealed to us fans. Now, I hope, the Giants will target and acquire a "real" center - either via the draft or FA.
First of all, he was probably a top 5 OC his one year starting there. Second, his play this year was not great, but that was almost exclusively at LG. His limited time at OC he played well and, even with rust, was still far and away better than Feliciano at the position. Once Gates was back in the mix, I don't know why he didn't move to OC and Feliciano to LG, where he is a much better player.
It's tough to tell how much of his play this past year was rust and/or strength related, or just playing out of position. I wish him well, but we can upgrade OC.
if we signed a center from another team coming off a horrific leg injury in 2021, looking somewhat mediocre in part time play after his return, to a 3 year deal?

Agreed. The Giants probably wanted him back, but not at the number offered by Washington.
Happy for him given what he's been through.
And yes, he does count in the comp pick formula for next year.
but considering the injury he came back from, can’t begrudge him getting the biggest deal he could find. Good chance it’s the only time he gets a payday
Gates likely took the first decent deal knowing that despite the dearth of IOL, many teams would be understandably suspicious of signing him because of his injury history.
Maybe that can be put to rest. Loved him and his edge but he wasn't the same when he came back I don't think. And Giants weren't risking a 3 year deal on his potential recovery.

They still kept Shep who can't get out of bed in the morning without tearing an ACL, and their "awesome" punter..
“ Three years, $16.5 million with another $1.5 million for a max value of $18 million for Nick Gates with the #Commanders. Gets $8 million guaranteed.”
he really wasn't very good. He has played at replacement level his whole career for most part IMO. Seems like a great teammate, I really liked him for that stuff...and of course he is a great story with his injury. But he is no big loss on the field.

This regime clearly didn’t value him as much as the previous.
Good for him getting paid but if you go to a rival team by choice you're dead to me.
I just wish it was with the Giants.

Now he’s Washington trash.
For now.

So much for us loving our own lol
Worst case scenario is Brederson starts - so no real drop off from Gates

We didn’t have one when he was here. All he is at this point is a great story
Highly unlikely the Giants will sign less value than they lose.
Not a bad deal at all for WSH.
