The #Giants big splash of free agency: Sources say they have agreed to terms with #Colts FA LB Bobby Okereke, giving them a new face in the middle of their defense.
I was in the stands for the clincher against the Colts. Their whole team quit out there, but I noticed #58 running around and making tackles. He looked like the blowout was eating at him and we remember the forearm he gave to Jones, and then Jones got into the end zone taking another hit from Okereke. Getting a nice LB entering his prime and he should be able to make tackles that just haven't happened around here from the linebacker spot in years.

Same here. Saw same thing. Chunk of that defense quit in second half.
….not done at the position. Okereke only has 4 career QB hits so I’m thinking Wink will want another body that has a little juice as a blitzer.
I would be ok with still getting Devin Bush flyer, is market value is suppose to be a one year prove it deal around 3 million. Not great against the run, but he can cover and blitz
Bobby Okereke is a sideline to sideline active linebacker. Plays run well and is coming off a career-high 151 tackles in 17 games.
Also had 53 tackles at LOS and actually played 98 snaps in slot and 12 at corner.
A versatile linebacker that Wink Martindale looks for
Rare to find a LB that can also play slot corner and outside in certain situations
and before Blake's injury that was a great signing. Blake had an excellent year #1 for us.
Both these guys were mid-round picks out of Stanford...Bobby round 3 and Blake round 4. Almost identical statures. Both had multiple huge tackle seasons with their initial teams before signing with us, as well as up and down PFF ratings (each with two very good seasons and two so-so seasons).
I'm happy to bring him in, he'll be a nice upgrade over anything we've had in the middle at LBer since that one year of Blake. I just think the contract is a little high. Pratt and Edwards both seem to be similar levels and they got deals for way less AAV. But maybe their guaranteed money was a much greater % than Bobbys?? Bobby's is close to only 50%.
I don't believe we should target an ILB early in the draft, should focus on WR, CB, and Edge in first couple of rounds. If Beavers is healthy should be a really nice one two at ILB, much better than we've had in a while.
@NextGenStats
Bobby Okereke should make an immediate impact at the second level of the Giants defense.
Okereke generated 75 defensive stops in 2022, tied for 10th-most among LB. The Giants linebackers combined for 87 defensive stops last season, 19 fewer than any other defense.

in comparison to Pratt and TJ Edwards, both of which had a better overall season than Okereke did. Goes to show how unpredictable the free agent market can be.
think i may have taken the value plays. but i assume that also means they like okereke that much more. he's a quality player and one of sy's guys since his draft year if im remembering right.

Pratt has struggled against the run in past seasons. Edwards had a great year but entirely possible teams discounted it due to the talent he was surrounded by.
My #1 free agent target for the Giants going back to when the Giants played the Colts. This is the sideline to sideline middle LB this team has lacked for years. He is going to be a stud in this defense!
busted his ass ALL game against us in a blow out, made an impression on Schoen and Daboll. Remember, they want guys who fit the culture they are establishing, not just stat collectors.
Some guy I never heard of who writes for ESPN gave it a C-
Summary: Fifth year senior with three years of starting experience. Two time Honorable Mention All Pac 12 defender. Okereke fits the mold for today’s ideal linebacker when it comes to skill set. He is more than athletic enough to factor in coverage with his plus-top end speed and easy fluidity in his hips. The length is another plus there and he can really make his presence known physically. He is a tough, hard nosed linebacker that will let you know he hit you. Okereke lacks some of the vital instincts and natural flow and he may struggle with how fast things transpire in the NFL. However he is a solid weak side candidate that can make plays in space and give a defense options. Likely an eventual solid starter.
*Last year I had Darius Leonard as a top 5 overall player in the draft, he ended up being taken in the 2nd round and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. I bring that up because I have Leonard comps in multiple places for Okereke. I don’t see the same caliber but when it comes to skill set, they are similar. The elite, rare length paired with fluid hips can make him a major weapon in coverage and he is a violent player in traffic. There is a lot he can do, and he will be a true 3 down player.
yeah and they could have had long + edwards for almost the same total cost.
they must like okereke. brad spielberger at pff who generally does a really good job projected 4 yrs — $9.5m avg/yr $22.75m guaranteed, $38m total so they didn't overreach.
also interesting is that if they wanted to it wouldn't have been hard to stretch a drop farther for edmunds but they didnt.
Same. Long gets his hands very dirty and can blow up the run. He got a nice contract from Miami, too. Very affordable two-year deal. He'll fit very well in the Fangio scheme.
Okereke is an upgrade and will help solve problems.
But wanted them to sign whatever LB they felt fit this scheme best in that 8-10 AAV range. They had options and this is the player they targeted based on the contracts handed out, so I’m happy. Desperately needed and a stronger market than the draft class to target here.
It's called sarcasm dude. You couldn't get that @ the All Pros WR line? OK.
Still doesn’t mean you’re not drunk..😂
Haha. I'm not. Wife is due any minute on second kid. I gotta be alert.

@Mario F. FYI - Okreke said this season that he wants his name to be pronounced in the traditional Nigerian dialect, so it would be pronounced O-care-ah-kay

TJ Edwards of Long at the $ they got; but we have some cap and hoping this staff knows how to plan it going fwd - and fills a huge need. We certainly have some contracts coming up (Dex/Thomas); but also some buttons we can push to find cap $ (Williams/Jackson extensions, Barkely, etc). I like that they seemingly are being prudent - dont just burn $ because we can. For example, glad we didn't sign Edmunds at 4/$72m (maybe that # just gives me bad deja vu?) - and wonder if the Bears are trying to rebuild the '85 front seven w/2 big ILB contracts?

I was going to put this up here LMAO
Everyone had to watch this, I didn’t know our new addition was introduced in the 3rd round as a future hall of famer
Okereke’s fourth pass breakup of the season wasn’t his only notable play during the Colts’ final defensive stand. On the play before, he and Gilmore dropped Raiders running back Josh Jacobs after a 3-yard gain to set up third-and-7. And on Las Vegas’ last offensive play, in which Gilmore proved to be the star, Okereke came bearing down on quarterback Derek Carr and forced him to throw it early.
Three straight plays, all of which Okereke had a hand in.
“I’m just a guy that if you put me in the game, I’m gonna make something happen,” Okereke said.
The fourth-year player moved from middle to weakside linebacker this season, the first time he’s played the position since he was at Stanford, and he’s quietly emerged as one of the most impactful defenders in the NFL.
Per TruMedia, Okereke ranks 16th in the league with 23 splash plays. Splash plays are defined as the sum of a defender’s sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, pressures leading to throw aways, run and pass stuffs, interceptions, pass breakups and third- and fourth-down stops. Okereke produced two of those plays in the Colts’ win over the Raiders: a third-down tackle on Jacobs for no gain in the second quarter and his pass breakup in the end zone with under a minute left in the game.
Quote:
“Timely playmaking,” Okereke said. “I’ve been a guy who can make plays — plays on the ball, get my hand on the ball, interceptions — but being a guy who can be depended on to make those plays when it counts.”
Okereke’s 23 splash plays through 10 games, which rank second on the team behind Zaire Franklin’s 24, are more than he’s had in any other season (his previous high was 17 in 2020 and 2021).
Franklin commended Okereke for making the most of his opportunities, especially considering that in three games this season he split reps with star linebacker Shaquille Leonard, who’d been struggling with back and ankle issues. The three-time, first-team All-Pro underwent season-ending back surgery Tuesday, and although Franklin will miss playing alongside Leonard, he has full confidence in Okereke.
“I’m just proud of how he battles,” Franklin said. “He’s a professional. He always comes to work. He’s always ready to go. I really don’t expect nothing less from him.”
Okereke plans to uphold that high standard Sunday when the Colts host the Eagles, who are coming off their first loss of the season and rank third in the NFL averaging 27.3 points per game.
“I know the type of player I am,” Okereke said. “I’m fast, I’m physical, I’m smart. I play with instincts and I’m a playmaker. I just try to let that show every Sunday.”

Were the Colts playing a 4-3? How does "weakside" LB translate to Wink's system?

colts went to gus bradley last year when the bears hired eberflus (both played 4-3). bradley's system is the legacy seattle system so think bobby wagner role. that system isn't generally a ton of blitzing but the linebackers are asked to cover a lot of ground so it would seem like a good thing that okereke had his best year. both bradley and eberflus are heavy zone coverage (both their defenses were bottom 10 in man coverage% last year).
It’s hard to overstate how terrible the ILBs were.
It was the most deflating part of the Giants all year, they just couldn't get it right. With this signing at the depth DT/DE they hopefully addressed it a bit. Expect more in the draft.

It was obvious the Giants needed to address their inability to stop the run. New York ranked 28th in rushing yards allowed, with an average of 146.3 yards per game. The Giants' futile efforts to fit and stop power/gap and pin-pull rushing concepts were evident starting in Week 3 against the Cowboys where Tony Pollard rushed for 105 yards, and Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 73.
Kellen Moore, the former Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, called crack toss, G-Lead, and weak side runs that forced linebackers Tae Crowder and Austin Calitro to read, scrape, and locate - it didn’t work well for the Giants. Although the Giants upgraded from Crowder and Calitro with Jaylon Smith, the issues at the position persisted.
However, hopefully, the inability to fit power-gap at a consistent level is over.

Yes, the run defense was terrible and all the NFCE teams are heavy run teams. Need to get these teams in bad down/distance to impact the QB.

Although the Giants upgraded from Crowder and Calitro with Jaylon Smith, the issues at the position persisted.
However, hopefully, the inability to fit power-gap at a consistent level is over.

Or is the better usage to go CB?
I am sure the Giants would go BPA, but it is a fun thought to draft a LB in rd 1 to pair with Okereke.
Better usage to go CB or WR to me.
Unless they trade for a CB as a starter, not for depth.
